Ruby P. Anderson, 90

Mrs. Ruby P. Anderson, 90, passed away late Tuesday night, September 16, 2008, at the Evans Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville all of her life. She and her husband owned and operated Ruby’s Restaurant for 46 years. She was famous for her cooking and especially her apple tarts. She drove the school bus for Pinewood Christian Academy for many years. Mrs. Ruby was a member of Reidsville United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Northern Anderson; her parents, Zeb and Edna Parker; sisters, Annie Pearl McCumber and Beulah Driggers Howard; brothers, Bennie, Willie, Z.V. and Grady Parker.

She is survived by her daughter, Gale Anderson of Reidsville; two sons, Phil and Dale Anderson, both of Reidsville; a sister, Helen P. Harrelson of Pooler; a granddaughter, Kera Anderson of Statesboro.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Howard, Jerry Dean McCumber, Tommy Harrelson, Northern Anderson Jr., Eddie Anderson, and Wayman Parker.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 19, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Sterling Bargeron and Rev. Marc Foster officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Geneva Brown Denmark, 93, died Saturday, September 20,2008, at the Candler County Hospital. She was the daughter of the late W.L. Brown Sr. and Tera Mercer Brown. She was born in Tattnall County and moved back to Cobbtown 22 years ago, after living in Statesboro for many years. She attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, and retired from the Bulloch County Board of Education as a dietician. Mrs. Denmark was a member of the Cobbtown Baptist Church and the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class.

She is survived by her daughter, Faye Parker of Cobbtown; two grandchildren, Phillip Parker of Cobbtown and Phyllis McKeever of St. Cloud, FL; two great grandchildren, James Phillip Parker of Cobbtown and Samantha Martinez of Glennville; two great-great grandchildren, Zoey Parker and Shawn Martinez; six nieces and nephews, Judy Westbrook, Andy Perkins, David Perkins, Randy Lanier, Larry Lanier and Bootsie Swicord.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Rev. K.C. Seabury officiating. Burial followed in the Sunlight Cemetery. Marie S. Dreggors, 70

Marie S. Dreggors, slipped quietly into the arms of the Lord on Friday, September 19, 2008, at her residence, under the care of her family and Ogeechee Area Hospice. She was born September 16, 1938, in Seoul, Korea, and was a resident of U.S. since 1962. She was employed with Avon as a sales representative for many years, and loved to travel with her husband and work in her flower garden. She was a member of Glennville First Baptist Church, Joy Sunday School class and The Keenagers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sung Gong Oh and Won Kil Choi and brothers, Won IL Oh and Woo IL Oh.

She is survived by her husband, Willkie Dreggors of Glennville; son and daughter-in-law, David and Becky Dreggors of Lyons; brother, Byoung Sun Oh of Seoul, Korea; sisters, Jung IL Oh and Soon IL Oh, both of Seoul, Korea; grandchildren, Sara and Samuel Dreggors, Will Anderson and Hayley Whitley.

Raiford J. Kicklighter, 76, died Monday, September 15, 2008, under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of his life. He was retired from the Tattnall County Board of Educatoin Maintenance Department and was a member of Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church, where he served as Custodian for many years.

He is survived by his sisters and brother-in-law, Gwen Speir and Kathleen and Noah Kirkland, all of Glennville and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, September 18, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder David Summerford officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Nancy Monroe, 55, of Glennville, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2008, at the Hospice House of Savannah, GA, after an extended illness. She was a native of Tattnall County and had lived in Florida for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Norman Monroe of Glennville; one daughter, Shatiki Mosley of Glennville; one son, Rosevelt Wright of Ft. Stewart; six stepchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Loretta Brown of Reidsville, Mrs. Annie M. Ford and Lucille Grimes, both of Glennville; five brothers, Henry L. Thomas, Leroy Thomas and William Grimes, all of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Joe Louis Grimes of Utica, NY and Oscar L. Grimes of Glennville, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 23, 2008, at the First African Baptist Church in Glennville. A private burial was held later.

Julia Ontiveros, 60, died Thursday September 18, 2008, in Statesboro. The native of Mexico lived several years in McAllen, TX, before moving to the Bulloch county area. Julia was a member of the St. Matthew Parish. She loved cooking for her family and her most enjoyable time was having her children and grandchildren in her home on Sundays.

Survivors: husband, Gilberto Ontiveros of Statesboro; children, Nora (Jose) Juarez of Metter, Ricardo (Yolanda) Ontiveros, Juan (Vernocia) Ontiveros, Luis (Leticia) Ontiveros, all of Statesboro; brothers, Virginio Duenez and Alejandro Camacho; sisters, Apolonia Borrego and Graciela Guerrero, and12 grandchildren.

Rosary services were held Saturday at the funeral home, and the funeral mass was held Sunday, September 21 at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Statesboro.

Althea Tootle Sheffield, 87, died Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native lived in this area all of her life. She was a homemaker who devoted her life to the loving care of her family. She was of the Christian faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Sheffield.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Putnam of Glennville; son and daughter-in-law, Jerome and Elizabeth Sheffield of Glennville; special friend, Emily Kicklighter of Glennville; four grandchildren, David Sheffield of Los Angeles, CA, Will and Angelynne Sheffield of Glennville, Amy and Randy Jessup of Gainesville, GA, and Lee and Cindy Sheffield of Glennville; nine great-grandchildren, Matthew Putnam, Ashley Putnam, Will K. Sheffield, Aubrey Ray Sheffield, Carson Becton, Ben Jessup, John Jessup, Railey Sheffield and Elizabeth Jessup; one great-great-grandson, Bailey Putnam and several other relatives.

Andrew L. Smith, Jr., 78

Mr. Andrew L. Smith, Jr., age 78, of Waynesville, NC,died Thursday, September 18, 2008, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Portal, Georgia, he was raised in Savannah and resided in Sunset Harbor, NC, prior to moving to Waynesville, NC. He was the son of the late Andrew L. Smith and Lena Hartley Smith Byrd and was preceded in death by two sisters, Imogene Lanigan and Christine Prescott. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict and was a member of The National Association of Atomic Veterans. He was employed with CSX Railroad for 29 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Solomon Lodge No. K F&AM for 50 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joanne Gubbins Smith; a son, Mark Smith, of Lafayette, CA; two daughters, Shelly Millard and her husband, Jim, of Waynesville, Kelly Musty and her husband, Dan, of Hillsborough, NC; and a niece, Cynthia Gamble.

A graveside funeral service was held Monday at the Lake Cemetery in Metter. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Masonic Home for Children, 1417 Nottingham Drive, Macon, GA 31211.

Joede Watson, 80, passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2008, at Evans Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Tattnall County and was a resident of the Glenview Nursing Home for a number of years.

He is survived by two sisters, Katherine Middleton and Annie Harvey, and a brother, Henry Watson, all of Glennville, GA and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 27, 2008, at the Center of Life Church of God in Glennville, GA, at 1:00 p.m. with burial in the Robert Chapel Cemetery in Tyson, GA.

Marlon C. Burns, 46

Marlon C. Burns, 46, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 31, 2008, at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut.

He was born to the late Catherine (Bryant) Burns on January 24, 1962 in New Rochelle, New York. He received his formal education in Burlington Township, New Jersey, Somerset, MA, Lombard, Illinois, and graduated from Dartmouth High School in 1980. He went on to Providence College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. He received Christ at an early age and was baptized at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Burlington, NJ.

He married Laurie Costa on February 12, 1988. They were blessed with three lovely daughters. Marlon worked for Spencer Technology in Worcester, MA as a database manager until his untimely passing.

He leaves to mourn Laurie, Shannon, Amber and Katelyn Burns of Fall River, MA; his companion, Renee Acri and two daughters, Marnay Summer Acri-Burns and Catherine Rose Acri-Burns all of Worcester, MA; his father, Joel E. Burns; his step-mother, Donna of Dartmouth, MA; two brothers, Edward A. Mosley of New Bedford, MA and Bobby Norward of Pennsylvania; his maternal grandmother, Savannah Mae Simmons of Collins, GA, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends and relatives.

Margaret Calloway Eason, 88

Margaret Calloway Eason, 88, the Eason Family Matriarch, passed away peacefully at her residence, September 11, 2008, after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, A.D. Eason, and her children, Hinton Loy Eason, Kathryn E. Sikes, A.D. Eason Jr., and James Carroll Eason.

Mrs. Eason was a homemaker whose greatest pleasure was seeing her family at her table. For 70 years, she made her home in the Undine Community and lovingly raised 14 children and many grandchildren who were placed in her care. Mama will be missed greatly by all of her family and friends. She was a long-time active member of Eason’s Chapel Methodist Church.

She is survived by her children, Judy Eason Wise of Claxton, Gerald “Jerry” and Johnnie Eason of Savannah, Linda and Charles Sikes of Collins, George “Bucky” and Connie Eason of Lizella, Julia and Jay Wildes of Hillview, Gayle and Donald Thagard of Ellijay, C. Paul and Linda Eason of Vidalia, Martha Jo and Mark Davis of Sioux Falls, SD, Tim and Teresa Eason of Claxton, Mark and Jane Eason of Athens and Ellen and Time Moncrief of Bogart; her sister and brother-in-law, Zelna and Otis Collins of Collins and her sister-in-law, Verna Calloway of Villa Rica; also by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Clarence C. Green, 77, died Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at his home. He was born in Tattnall County and lived in Savannah for many years before moving back to Collins in1984. He was a retired mechanic from the Georgia Dept. of

Transportation and a member of the Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who also loved his dog Mitzi. He was an outdoorsman, who loved to deer hunt with dogs, fish, and work in his garden.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Rhiner Green of Collins; three sons, Larry and Donald Green of Collins and Coy Green of Ellabell; two daughters, Debra McCullough of Ellabell and Cathy Findley of Richmond Hill; four sisters,

Sydney Williams and Willie Mae Wills, both of Cobbtown, Dorothy Collins and Eunice Powell, both of Collins; eight grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.

Edwin “Rock” Padgett, 64, of Eastman, died Friday, September 12, 2008, in FairView Park Hospital.

He was a native of Tattnall County, had lived in Dodge County for the past 30 years, was a retired truck driver, a Baptist and son of the late Alma Martin Padgett and Doy Padgett.

He is survived by his wife, Regina Phagan Padgett of Eastman; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Tanya Padgett; two daughters and a son-in-law, Donna Sue and Mack Morgan and Jan Conley, all of Eastman; three sisters, Jacquline Oliver of Vidalia, Joyce Padgett and Gloria Padgett, both of Reidsville; two brothers, Jerry Padgett of Reidsville and Johnny Padgett of Eden; nine grandchildren, Hunter, Kinsley, Tonya, Tyler, Brandy, Jennifer, Derek, Benton and Chris; three great-grandchildren, Aniston, Jacob and Railey, who was born on September 12, the day of Ed’s passing.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 15, in Stokes-Southerland Funeral Chapel, with Reverend Toby Skrine and Reverend Tommy Thomas officiating, with interment in Woodlawn Cemetery. Ms. Patricia Williams was pianist for the funeral service.

Jimmie Baker Eagen, 76, passed away Monday, September 8, 2008, at her residence under the care of Hospice of South Georgia. The Tattnall County native had lived in Miami for many years, prior to moving back to Jesup in 1988. She was a member of American Legion #267 and VFW Post #1590 and a true American Patriot.

She is survived by her husband, Charles A. Eagen of Jesup; children, Robert and Roberta Hughs of Jesup, Linda Lee Walker of Albany and Cindy Hughs of Jesup; brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Peggy Baker of Albany; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charles and Gertrude Blaubert of New Jersey, Michael and Phyllis Eagen of Tallahassee, FL, Cathy and Tim Armstrong of New Jersey and Ruby Baker of Jesup; grandchildren, Eddie Hughs of Screven, Chris Hughs of Kissimmee, FL, Greg Hughs of Jesup and Justin Hughs of Ludowici; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Cola Estell Ward Holloway, 86, died Friday, September 5, 2008, after an extended illness. The native of Emanuel lived most of her life in Stillmore. Cola enjoyed helping others, spending time in her yards working with her flowers, but her greatest love was spending time with her family. And her family felt that they had the best mama anyone could have.

She was predeceased by her parents, Willie and Lottie Mae Sutton Ward; husband, R. M. Holloway; son, Tim Holloway; great-grandson, William Floyd Jones; five brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include David M. (Linda) Holloway of Leslie, Gail H. Daniels, Helen Hadden, JoAnn (Thomas) Clark, Susan (James) Youmans Jr., Patricia (Pat) Mikell, all of Stillmore; brother, John Nevil Ward of Statesboro; sister, Mary Ann Donaldson of Twin City; 23 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Letherea K. Waters, 87, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2008, at Glenvue Nursing home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. She was born in Tattnall County on September 3, 1921, and was a lifelong resident. She was a member of Mendes Baptist Church and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was employed with the Head Start Program and with the Tattnall County Schools food service program for many years.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lonie D. Kicklighter and her husband, Oran Waters.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Carroll Cobb of Glennville; son Jerry Oran Waters of Inman, SC; grandchildren, Joan C. and Brian Willis, Jeanie C. Norman, Angela C. and Jay Clark, Jeffrey A. and Tracy Waters and Jason O. and Sara Waters; ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 6, 2008, from the chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home in Glennville with Reverend Eric Rentz officiating. Burial followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.

Bennie A. Bozman, Jr., 83

Bennie A. Bozman, Jr., 83, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at the Carl Vinson Veterans Hospital in Dublin. The Maryland native had lived in Florida for many years before moving to Glennville in 2003. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served as one of the original Frogmen Demolition Team in WWII, was a member of the VFW Post #2811 and Military Order of the COOTIE of the United States in Gainesville, FL, and a member of the National Order of Moose Club. He was retired as a shipping and receiving manager in retail office supply.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann Bozman of Glennville; son and daughter-in-law, Bennie A. Bozman III and Donna of Bluffton, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Benita Ann Cowart and Jerry of Glennville; brother, Stanley Clyde Bozman of Southern Pines, NC; sister, Eva Turner of Silver Springs, MD; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Friday, August 29, 2008, at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

Eugene Fred (Boopy) Clark, 71, died Sunday August 31, 2008, at the Candler County Hospital. Fred was born in Washington, DC, but lived most of his life in Frederick, MD, where he retired from the Department of Treasury after 25 years. He moved to Stillmore two years ago and was a member of the Stillmore United Methodist Church.

Survivors are his wife: Shirley Clark of Frederick, MD; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and JoAnn Clark; nephew, John Thomas Clark; nieces, Cynthia Carrie Lee Clark and Mary Frances Clark; two great nieces and two great nephews, all of Stillmore.

Graveside funeral services were held Monday Sept.1, 2008, at the Stillmore City Cemetery.

William Adrian Gay, 60, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2008, in Louisville, Kentucky. The Jeff Davis County native had lived in Glennville for many years before moving to Louisville. He was employed with Claxton Poultry Farms for many years and was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was also a member of Maple Grove Baptist Church in Louisville.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn I. Gay of Louisville, KY; children, Brandon Wade Gay and Andrea M. Pickren, both of Glennville, Amanda C. Conaghan of Callahan, FL, and William Adrian Gay, II and Anthony D. Gay, both of Jacksonville, FL; brother, Wendell Ryals of Dothan, AL; sisters, Irene DuBose of Manning, SC, Geraldine Barton of Parrott, GA, and Daryl Stanfield of Albany; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 29, 2008, from the chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home in Glennville, with Reverend Ray Hayes officiating. Burial followed in the Gay Family Cemetery in Hazlehurst.

She was a lifelong resident of Evans County, a devoted Christian, a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker.  She dearly loved her family, her friends, and her church, Bull Creek Baptist Church.  Her friends and family considered her a Godly woman of the highest character, filled with grace and dignity. 

She is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Thomas Glisson.

Survivors include her children, Thomas and Billie Glisson of Vero Beach, FL, Ellen and Winston Whittle of Claxton, Avis Glisson of Greensboro, NC, Randy and Kathy Glisson of Birmingham, AL, and Miriam and Gregg Usry of Claxton; ten grandchildren, Hugh, Paul, Stacey, Joy, Jenny, Julianna, Jane, Jeremy, Joshua and Joanna; three great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Dylan and Beckham; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Friday, August 29, at Bull Creek Baptist Church, with burial following in Bull Creek Cemetery.

Mary Durrence Moore, 85

Mary Durrence Moore, 85, died Thursday, August 28, 2008, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native was a former Miss Georgia in 1939 and had lived in this area all of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Glennville First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Moore; sister, Betty Baxter and a brother, Brice Durrence.

She is survived by her son, Dail Moore of Glennville; sister, Eloyce Massengale of Atlanta and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 2, 2008, from the Chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Rick Brown officiating. Burial followed in Glennville City Cemetery.
