Obituaries for October 30, 2008 Lois M. Anderson, 88 Lois M. Anderson, 88, passed away October 24, 2008, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native lived most of her life in Evans County. She was of the Baptist Faith. She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Sapp of Claxton and Eunice Rountree of Bloomingdale, GA; one half sister, Leatha Campbell of Kentucky; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, October 27, 2008, at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home with Reverend Kenny Harrelson officiating. Burial followed in the Old Anderson Church Cemetery. Anna Cristina Santiz Perez, 3-months-old Anna Cristina Santiz Perez, 3-month-old daughter of Agustin Santiz Diaz and Rosa Perez Gomes of Swainsboro, died Sunday October 26, 2008. Little Anna is also survived by her sister, Lucia Maria Santiz Perez, Paternal Grandparents Manuel Santiz Lopez and Rosa Diaz Soska, her maternal grandmother is Guadalupe Perez Santiz. Harry “Jack” Cowart Sr., 74 Harry “Jack” Cowart Sr., age 74, of Vidalia, GA, passed away Monday evening, October 21, 2008, in Savannah Memorial Hospital in Savannah Georgia after an extended illness. A native of Tattnall County, he lived most of his life in Reidsville, GA. He served in the United States Navy. Mr. Cowart is preceded in death by his parents, O.H. Cowart and Maudie Thigpen Cowart. Survivors include: his wife, Mrs. Reba Nell Cowart of Vidalia, one son Harry Jack Cowart Jr. of Blue Springs, MO, one daughter Janet Christy Collins of Cobbtown, one sister Joyce Kirkland of Griffin, GA; two grandchildren, Matthew Boney and Heath Boney. Memorial services for Mr. Harry “Jack” Cowart Sr. will be conducted Thursday afternoon October 23, 2008, at 3:00 in the chapel of Stewart Funeral Home with Rev. Sterling Bargeron officiating. Aron (Pete) Johnson, Jr., 71 Aron (Pete) Johnson, Jr., 71, of Glennville, died Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro, GA. He was born to the late Aron and Hattie Jonhson of Glennville, and was married to the late Mildred Johnson. He attended public school in Glennville, and worked in the pulpwood industry for many years. He is survived by three sons, Billy Jr. and Zella Johnson, George and Mary Johnson, all of Glennville and Ricky and Antonia Johnson of Chester, VA; two daughters, Annette Sharpe of Reidsville and Linda Johnson of Glennville; one sister, Helen Oliver of Mebena, NC; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday, October 19, 2008, at First African Missionary Baptist Church in Glennville. Interment followed in the First African Baptist Church Cemetery. William Oren Jones, 84 William Oren Jones, 84, passed away October 15, 2008, at Bethany Assisted Living in Vidalia, after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s disease. The family would like to thank the special people at Bethany Assisted Living and Southern Care Hospice. Oren was born on June 22, 1924, to the late Henry and Lizzie Purvis Jones of Manassas. He is also preceded in death by six sisters and four brothers. Oren was a graduate of Middle Georgia College and Auburn University. He began his insurance career in Tifton, GA., later joining Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance Company, where he retired after 28 years. He was the District Marketing Manager for the Seventh District of Georgia when he retired. His fondest memories were of his former agents and working with the young people he hired and seeing them become successful. Oren was a member of the First Baptist Church in Metter, GA., and the Antioch Sunday School Class. He worked with several committees but enjoyed most the six and a half years as the Chairman of the Building Committee during the restoration of the church. Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Marjorie Davis Jones of Collins; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kelvin Jones of Statesboro and Stephen and Susan Jones of Macon; one stepson, Glenn and wife Frankie Davis of Collins; one step-daughter, Gail and husband Jimmy Taylor of Richmond Hill; one sister, Ellen Jones of Brunswick; four granddaughters, Hillary, Emily, Ellen Marie and Sadie Jones; one step-granddaughter and husband, Amanda and Jason Julaton; two step-grandsons, Justin Taylor and Billy Goosby; one great-granddaughter, Abigail Julaton; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Friday, October 17, 2008, at the First Baptist Church in Metter, GA., with Rev. Jay Moore officiating and Terry Manuel and Pat Bradley having the eulogy. Thomas Logan McTeer, 58 Thomas Logan McTeer, 58, died Saturday, October 18, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Logan was a native Savannahian, and graduate of Benedictine Military School and the Universty of Georgia. He was predeceased by paternal grandparents, Henry Wells McTeer and Wahlena Hampton Pritchard McTeer, of Isle of Hope, his maternal grandparents Augustine Lawrence McCarthy and Mary Agnes Logan McCarthy, of Isle of Hope, his parents, Henry Webb McTeer and Mary McCarthy McTeer of Isle of Hope, an aunt, Elizabeth McTeer Thompson and sister Mary McTeer McKay. Virginia Thompson Oates, 83 Virginia Thompson Oates, 83, died Sunday, October 12, 2008,at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. The Chatham County native had lived in Register since 1993, moving from Wilmington Park in Savannah. She was active with her husband in the American Business Clubs of America AMBUCS and was a member of AMDOES Women’s Auxiliary. Mrs. Oates was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Savannah and loved crafts, floral arranging, crocheting and knitting. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, James L. Oates Sr.; a son and daughter-in-law, James L. Jr. and Ruth Oates ; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra and John Williams, all of Register, and Linda Jenkins of Metter; seven grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. Karl Scarboro Olliff, 85 Mrs. Karl Scarboro Olliff, 85, died Thursday October, 16, 2008, in Savannah. The native of Bulloch County had lived most of her life in the Candler County area and was a member of Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church. Mrs. Karl was a retired seamstress, having worked with Metter Manufacturing for several years. She enjoyed cooking, taking care of her pecan orchard, staying busy by working and playing with her grandchildren. Mrs. Karl was known as a very giving person to her family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Bert and Mamie Johnson Scarboro, husband of 63 years Raymond W. Olliff, son Wayne R. Olliff and grandson Jeff Olliff. Edward Owens, 89 Edward Owens, 89, died Sunday, October 12, 2008, at the Candler Co. Hospital. A native of Candler County, he had lived in Twin City most of his life. Mr. Owens was a retired dairyman and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria Poole Owens. Jessie B.K. Tootle, 94 Jessie B.K. Tootle, 94, passed away Friday, October 17, 2008, at Appling Health Care System. The Screven county native had lived in Tattnall County most of her life, moving to Savannah in 1960 and had lived in Appling County for many years. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church, worked as a waitress and was a homemaker. She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Hall, of Baxley; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. DeAlva Brown Warren, 94 Mrs. DeAlva Brown Warren, 94, died Thursday, October 9,2008, at BJC Nursing Home in Commerce. The Emanuel County native lived most of her life in Metter before moving to Jefferson in 1998 to be near her son. She was a homemaker and retired from Metter Manufacturing Company. She was a member of the Cedar Street Baptist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. DeAlva enjoyed talking and being with people, never meeting a stranger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Warren and a son, Brown Warren. She is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, Herbert and Martha Warren of Eatonton, Jim and Linda Warrenof Jefferson and Edna Warren of Snellville; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 11, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Rev. Doug Gibson officiating. Mary Patricia Brady Clifton, 46 Mary Patricia Brady Clifton, 46, died Tuesday, October 7, 2008, after a sudden illness. A native of Clarke County, Georgia, she attended New Beulah Methodist of Ollifftown. Mary was a graduate of Oconee County High School and Georgia Southern University with a Masters of Special Education. She worked as a parapropressional in the Candler County Schools before starting her teaching career at Toombs County Middle School. She then returned to Metter, teaching Special Education at the middle and high schools, and pioneered the Performance Learning Center before assuming the position of Special Education Coordinator at the Board of Education. “Mama Mary” was an avid sports “mom” following all of her “kids” in their endeavors and competitions. She collected frogs, dogs, and lots of extra “children.” She was an inspiration to all who knew her and went to the last mile to help those in need, always putting others before herself. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Danny Brady. She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Jay Clifton, children Jesse Clifton and Jeffrey Clifton, step-son, Jamie Clifton, close family friend Leigh Ann Cundiff, all of Metter, brother, Keith Brady of Athens, sister Sandy Heard of Alabama, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends, and “children.” Funeral services were held Friday, October 10, 2008, at the Wilcox Auditorium with the burial following at Lake Church Cemetery. Sybil Holton, 84 Sybil Holton, 84, passed away at her home after a long illness. The Tattnall County native lived in Tattnall County all of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Harold Holton. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Douglas Geiger of Monroe and Susan and Mike Campbell of Chiefland, FL; one son, William J. Holton of Claxton; one sister, Belinda Glisson of Brunswick, GA; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Jason W. Jarriel, age 79 Mr. Jason W. Jarriel, age 79, passed away Sunday morning, October 12, 2008, at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin. The Tattnall County native had lived in Collins most of his life. He was a US Navy Veteran and was employed with the Tattnall County Sheriff’s Office as a dispatcher for 25 years. He was also a retired farmer and was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mrs. Eleanor Jarriel of Collins; a son, Louie Jarriel of Claxton; four daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Robert West of Reidsville, Beth and Jimmy Barnett of Glennville, Sue and Gonzalo Garcia of Claxton, and Kim and Rob Johnson of Columbia, SC; a sister, Lorena Callaway of Collins; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Florrie L. Kennedy of Reidsville; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The Wayne County native had lived in this area all of her life and was formerly employed as a secretary. Binnie C. Moore, 95 Mrs. Binnie C. Moore, 95, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2008, at Evans Memorial Hospital. She was born in Tattnall County on July 29, 1913, to Jerome and Carrie Ray Brannen. She was employed in the textile industries for many years, a homemaker and loved working in her flower garden. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and attended Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Moore. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Bobbie and Bennie Dubberly of Glennville, Melba and Sam McDugald of St. Augustine, FL, Laverne and Owen Thomas of Baldwin, FL, and Dorothy and Cecil Kicklighter of Ludowici; sons and daughters-in-law, Doyle and Carol Moore of Jacksonville, FL and Durone and Donna Moore of Reidsville; 14 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. John D. Mosley, 60 John D. Mosley, 60, passed away Friday, October 10, 2008, at his residence. The Tattnall County native had lived in Minnesota for many years, prior to moving back to Glennville five years ago. He was a retired painter from the construction industry and of the Baptist faith. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sara; father, Wade; brother, Larry and sister, Wendy. He is survived by his loving companion, Geraldine Galbreath of Vidalia; mother, Loree Mosley of Glennville; children, Dusty Page of Savannah and Wade Mosley of Vidalia; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Ann and Bobby Ray of Reidsville, Gail and Sammy Hendrix of Glennville and Delta Prudence of Glennville; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. James Tyler Pearson, 19 James Tyler Pearson, 19, died Thursday, October 9, 2008, at Sands University Hospital in Gainsville, FL. The Ohio native had lived in this area most of his life and enjoyed playing football at Tattnall County High School where he attended school. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and attending Cobbtown Baptist Church and First United Pentecostal Church of Glennville. The Johnson County native lived in Florida for many years, moving back to Reidsville in 1975. She was retired from South Florida Dairy Foods and a member of the Church of God. The Toombs County native had lived in Glennville for many years. He was a World War II Veteran, former educator and the owner/operator of Glennville Acceptance Company. He was a member of Glennville United Methodist Church where he served as a Lay Leader, and was a Sunday school teacher at Glennville and Hopewell United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Sutton and brother, W.D. Sutton. He is survived by his daughter, Sheryl Bowen of Glennville and son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Colleen Snow Sutton of St. Simons Island; sisters, Freddie Finklea of Keystone, FL, and Joan Atkinson of Jacksonville, FL; sister-in-law, Christine Sutton; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jennifer Sutton and Reese Snow; great-grandchild, Zannis Kodros, and several nieces and nephews. Harry L. Woodcock, 94 Harry L. Woodcock, 94, passed away Saturday, October 11, 2008, at Glenvue Nursing Home, under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of his life and was a World War II Army Veteran. He and his brother owned and operated Woodcock’s Barbershop for over 40 years. He was employed with Duramatic Corporation for over 17 years, a member of Glennville VFW Post 8379 and a member of the Glennville First Baptist Church. He loved to fish. He was preceded in death by a son, Lee Woodcock and a daughter, Joan W. Kimble. He is survived by his wife, Jewel Woodcock of Glennville; children, Larry and Cindy Woodcock of Hazlehurst, GA, Teresa and Tommy Jordan of Gray, GA and Deneb Woodcock Causey of Glennville; ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. James Bruce Allen Sr., 68 James Bruce Allen Sr., 68, was called home Thursday, October 2, 2008, at the VA Hospital in Augusta. Bruce lived most of his life in Candler County and was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. He was in the Army with the rank of E-4, enjoyed traveling, watching sports and spending time with family. Richard P. Bradley, 87 Mr. Richard P. Bradley, age 87, passed away Friday, October 3, 2008, at his residence. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville most of his life. He attended the Georgia Military Academy, Emory University Academy, Emory University, and the University of Georgia. He was a World War II Veteran serving in the US Army Air Force as a pilot. He was a charter member and executive officer of the Company “C” 144th A.I.B. Georgia National Guard. He retired from the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. He was a former member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, City of Glennville Industrial Authority, Glennville Hospital Authority, City of Glennville Planning and Zoning Commission, Glennville City Council and served as Mayor Pro-Tem. He held commercial pilot license and was a member of the Glennville United Methodist Church. Mr. Bradley was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Stacy Bradley; daughter, Susan B. Anderson; brothers, Edward Bradley and John D. Bradley Jr. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Richard P. and Louise Bradley Jr. of Glennville; a son-in-law, Danny Anderson of Glennville; five grandchildren, Lana and Walter Ray, Daniel and Wendy Anderson, Ricky and Jennifer Bradley, Alan and Angie Anderson, all of Glennville and Bradley B. She was a member of Ebenezer Free Will Baptist Church, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and enjoyed crafts and plants. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie F. Diane Humphrey, 57 Diane Humphrey, 57, of Cobbtown died Tuesday, September 30,2008, at Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia. She was born in Baltimore, MD, and moved to Cobbtown in 1969. Diane was a cosmetologist and attended the Cobbtown United Methodist Church. She became disabled 10 years ago due to a stroke and was preceded in death by her father, George Humphrey Survivors are her mother, Arlene Humphrey; a brother, Danny Humphrey; a sister, Karen Humphrey; a niece and two nephews,Lacey Humphrey, Jason Humphrey and Britt Humphrey, all of Cobbtown. John D. (Johnny) Kicklighter, 55 John D. (Johnny) Kicklighter, 55, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. Johnny was born in Savannah, August 29, 1953 to Jean D. and Doris Beasley Kicklighter. He was a graduate of Woodard Academy in Atlanta class of 1971 and Mercer University in Macon class of 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in economics. He graduated from the Georgia Banking School in Athens in the class of 1979. Johnny entered the banking field immediately upon graduation from college and held various positions and served as President and CEO of First Citizens Bank for many years. He completed Georgia Banker Association School of Banking and Auditing School and American Institute of Banking Principles of Banking. He graduated form the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University in 1982. He was the grandson of the founder of First Citizens Bank and former State Superintendent of Banks, the late John C. Beasley and grandson of the late C.W. Kicklighter, former president and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Glennville Bank and Trust Company. Johnny’s parents held the positions of President and Chairman of the Board of First Citizens Bank for many years. He was a member of Glennville First Baptist Church, the Georgia Forestry Association, Glennville Boosters Club, Sigma Nu Fraternity, Glennville Jaycees and was an avid outdoorsman. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette S. Kicklighter of Glennville; daughters, Tiffany Kicklighter of Glennville and Scarlett Livingston of Cobbtown; son Shannon Yarbrough of Glennville; sister, Jeanie Anderson of Glennville; grandchildren, Cheyanne Yarbrough, Chasity and Chase Dubberly; niece, Renee and Keith Dixon; nephew, Lt. The Emanuel County native had lived in Bryan County many years moving to Reidsville twenty-five years ago. He was employed with Claxton Poultry as a supervisor. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Riner. He is survived by his wife, Shirley L. Riner of Reidsville; a daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Rick Melton of Reidsville; a son and daughter-in-law, Trey and April Riner of Glennville; a step-daughter, Jeannie Herb of Reidsville; four step-sons, J.J. Lawson Rudolph Smith, 80 Lawson Rudolph Smith, 80, died October 2, 2008, at his home in Glennville. He was born in Broxton, GA, on November 4, 1927, to Samuel Lawson and Lillie Mae Smith. At the age of 17, he joined the Merchant Marines to travel the world. He was commissioned in the Navy Reserves where he was a Lt. JG during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he went to the University of Georgia and earned a degree in Agricultural Engineering and retired from Civil Service in October 1993. Lawson was an avid UGA football fan and spent many afternoons cheering their victory. He loved to ride the roads of the Deep South to see the countryside and visit places he had never been. He loved to fish and farm and spent many hours teaching his children and grandchildren to love his world. He felt he had the best girl in the world with his wife, Betty, and dearly loved her cooking and the loving ways she made his life special. He was a devout Christian and a member of Glennville First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Carol Day Smith of Glennville; children, Betty Dolph Solomon and Mike of Douglas, Jon Lawson Smith and Phyllis of Glennville, Wanda Lynn Quinn and Curtis of Fairhope, AL and Pamela Carol Berry of Douglas; brothers, James Olvin Smith of Broxton and Samuel Vyrlin Smith of Macon; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Evelyn Conner Barrow, 86 Mrs. Evelyn Conner Barrow, 86, died Monday, September 29, 2008, at Community Hospice House in Vidalia. The Candler County native lived most of her life in Tattnall County. She was a homemaker and a member of the Claxton Primitive Baptist Church. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who loved her friends and neighbors. When time permitted, she loved to fish. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Eugene Bryson. He was retired from Claxton Poultry after 30 years of service. He was a Korean War Army Veteran and a member of Northside Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Knight; parents, G.R. and Dooley Knight; brothers, Ellis and Cecil Knight. Travis M. Lee, 31 Travis M. Lee, 31, died Saturday, September 20, 2008, in a motorcycle accident in California. Travis was a 1995 graduate of Metter High School and served in the United States Navy for 10 years. Travis was a Navy Seal and served on the U.S.S. John C. Stennis and the U.S.S. Cowpens in the Middle East. He was stationed in several ports including Norfolk, VA, Japan and San Diego, California. At the time of his death, Travis was an Emergency Medical Technician and his hobby was building model ships. He is survived by his wife and daughter, Lynn and Gretchen Lee and a loving extended family all of Sacramento, CA ; his parents, Hoke and Deanna Lee; sisters and brothers-in-law, Tammy and Danny Durden, Tracy and Timmy Holloway; nephews, Smith Holloway, Seth Holloway and Zac Durden; a niece, Judsi Durden, all of Metter; and several uncles, aunts and cousins. Funeral services were held Friday, August 26, 2008, at Evergreen Memorial Funeral Home in Sacramento, CA. Burial with Military Honors was at Valley National Cemetery in San Diego, CA. Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter was in charge of arrangements.
Shirley Williams Sikes, 65 Shirley Williams Sikes, 65, of Cobbtown and Hagan, passed away Wednesday morning, September 24, 2008, at 4:15 a.m. at the Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. She was born in Candler County and graduated from Collins High School in 1961. She was a former insurance agent, owner and business manager of several local businesses. Her latter years were spent enjoying interior decorating and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her father, Herman Williams. She is survived by her husband, Rayford “Bully” Sikes of Cobbtown and Hagan; her mother, Sydney Green Williams of Cobbtown; four daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle S. and Richard J. Bowen of Perry, Darla K. and Michael L. Burkett of Portal, Angela A. and Russell D. Belding of Glennville, Kimberly C. and Kevin Johnson of Powder Springs; and one son, Casey G. Smith of Cobbtown; two brothers, William Grady Williams and Herman Alton “Al” Williams both of Cobbtown; 12 grandchildren, Stephanie Duckworth, Bryan Duckworth, Kameron Burkett, Ashlyn Belding, Kyler Johnson, Kamille Burkett, Kaitlyn Johnson, Haden Belding, Hunter Morris, Alissa Smith, Evan Belding and Keaton Johnson; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, September 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Pastor Jim Sutton officiating. Burial was in the Sunlight Cemetery. Pallbearers were Allen Thigpen, Joe Waters, Tom Young, Randy McRae, Lemuel Waters and Steven Newsome. Remembrances may be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, POB 531, Statesboro, GA 30459 or the Special Olympics, P.O. Box 501177, Atlanta, GA 31150-1177 in honor of her brother, Grady Williams and niece, Heather Williams. Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.
