Obituaries for November 30, 2006

Joseph Lester Brown, 89

Mr. Joseph Lester Brown, 89, of the Evergreen Community near Cobbtown, died surrounded by his family at his home Tuesday, November 21, 2006. He was born in Bulloch County, the son of Eli and Alice Braswell Brown and lived most of his life in Tattnall County. He was a farmer and an U.S. Army veteran, serving his country from August 1938 to August 1945. He was a Technical Sergeant in Company B of the 10th Infantry Training Battalion. During WWII he participated in the Normandy Campaign and the Northern France Campaign, where he was wounded in action. He received a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Expert Badge with Rifle Bar. He also received the American Defense Service Metal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with two Bronze stars, and WWII Victory Medal. In 1946 following his discharge from the US Army he settled on a farm in the Evergreen Community where he had since resided. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and sharing abundant harvests with family and friends. He served the Lord faithfully. He was a member of Evergreen Baptist Church since 1950 and served as a deacon since 1965, and was also a former Sunday school director and teacher, and former song leader. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Estelle Oliver Brown; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara B. Slater and Glen C. Slater, of the Evergreen Community; grandson and granddaughter-in-law: G. Cleveland Slater, Jr. and Janie Mercer Slater, of Alpharetta; grandson, Stanley H. Slater, of Roanoke, VA; and two great-grandchildren, Carolina and Joseph Slater

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, November 25, 2006, at Morgan Family Funeral Home, with burial following in the Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery.

Janet Lynn Alberson Fail, 41

Mrs. Janet Lynn Alberson Fail, 41, died Saturday, November 25, 2006 at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. The Tattnall County native lived in Statesboro for the past 15 years. Mrs. Fail had attended Brewton-Parker College. She was employed with Georgia Southern University for 14 years. Mrs. Fail was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Statesboro where she served as church organist and the Relay for Life team chairperson.

Surviving are her husband, Osey Fail, Jr. of Statesboro; three daughters, Katie Alberson, Kayla Alberson and Kaci Fail, all of Statesboro; her parents, Janice and Elbert Alberson of Cobbtown; and a sister, Leigh Alberson of Cobbtown. Several aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 28, at the Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Osborne officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were, Tim Erdmire, Bubba Fields, David Mathis, Ricky Cartee, Al Sikes, and Richard Deal.

Beverly S. Jarriel, 68

Mrs. Beverly S. Jarriel, 68, passed away early Tuesday morning, November 21, 2006, at her residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice.

Mrs. Jarriel was born in Evans County, on November 12, 1938. She was a graduate of Collins High School, and was retired from the Tattnall County Board of Education. She was a member of the Reidsville Baptist Church.

Her parents, Braxton and Alma Sapp; brothers, Ben and Delma Sapp preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Billy Dean Jarriel of Reidsville; two daughters, and sons-in-laws, Angelia and Gary Leggett of Claxton and Stephanie and Kenny Lewis of Hagan; a sister, Myrtice Tanner of Claxton; a brother and sister-in-laws, Randolph and Faye Sapp, Joyce W. Sapp and Joyce H. Sapp all of Claxton; grandchildren, Jarin and Jenna Lewis of Hagan and Gary and Emily Leggett Jr. of Rincon; several nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Eric Sapp, Randy Sapp, Doug Williams, Jerimey Sapp, Jimmy Hal Hicks Jr., and Ty Blair.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 22, 2006, at Reidsville Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Miller and Rev. Sterling Bargeron officiating. Interment followed in the Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Lloyd B. Jones, 82

Pastor Lloyd B. Jones, 82, was a man who talked and walked with God. He was born on June 29, 1924, in Evans County, Georgia, to the late Albert and Ezia Jones. He was the eldest of six children, two of whom preceded him in death, Robert and Juanita Benjamin.

As a young boy he worked with his father on the farm. On October 13, 1943, he was united in holy matrimony to the former Thelma Lucille Whitfield. He also served in the United States Army. There were eight children born of this union, and one preceded him in death, Donald.

In 1953, L.B. (as he was called) and his family moved to New York City. There he held many jobs. In 1957, he was born a second time, this time unto Salvation. Shortly after his conversion, God called him into the Ministry, which has spanned 49 years. In this time he has pastored four churches; First Church of God, Jamaica, New York; United Community Church of Laurelton, New York; Glennville Church of God, Glennville, Georgia; Wabash Church of God, Dublin, Georgia; and was also Assistant Pastor of Church of God Mission in Springfield Gardens, New York City.

During his time as a pastor when he found the time, he attended and graduated from Bethel Baptist Bible Institute and also took correspondent courses at Anderson, IN, and the Bible Institute of the Church of God Ministerial Alliance, New York City. He has also been a Bible teacher and radio preacher for many years, and was in Nursing Home Ministry.

Pastor Jones was a people person. He touched the lives of everyone he met. He was truly a great Pastor, husband and father. His life was an example to his fellow ministers, church members, wife, children, grandchildren and all who knew him. He was loved by all.

Pastor Jones touched many lives. He lived the life that he preached. He has come to the end of his row. He stood the test and he has finished his task he set out to do. He will now take his rest.

He ended his journey on November 22, 2006. He leaves to cherish his memory; a loving and beloved wife of 63 years, Thelma L. Jones; four sons, Albert Jones (Lillian) of Savannah, GA, Delmar Jones of Dublin, GA, Andre Jones of New York, Phillip Jones (Tandra) of Macon, GA; four daughters, Sandra L. Hunter (Hamilton) of Savannah, GA, Dorothy Ballard (Roosevelt) of New York City, Monica Figueroa of Macon, GA, Helen Edmond (Bobby) of Dublin, GA; one brother, Rev. Lee Jones (Mary) of Collins, GA; two sisters, Nita Bell Baker, Lueretha Tillman, both of Claxton, GA; 24 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 29, 2006, at Wabash Church of God in Dublin, GA. Burial followed at Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery in Groveland, GA.

James “Hammer” Sikes, 64

James “Hammer” Sikes, 64, passed away Monday afternoon, November 20, 2006, at Community Hospice House in Vidalia. The Tattnall County native had lived in Collins all of his life. He was a retired fix-it-all man and attended Full Gospel Tabernacle in Collins.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie Sikes of Collins; mother, Ruth Powell of Collins; one step-daughter, Beverly Jenkins of Lyons; two step sons, David Jenkins of Vidalia and Johnny Jenkins of Waycross; step-grandchildren, Tyler Love, Dillon Jenkins, Catelyn Jenkins and Sheyane Jenkins.

Pallbearers were Robert L. Sikes, Gary Kennedy, Mike Smith, Pat Martin, Tony Martin, and Phillip Collins.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 24, 2006, at the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Acree officiating. Interment followed in the Collins Baptist Church Cemetery.

Eletha Jones Tatum, 88

Eletha Jones Tatum, 88, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 28, 2006, at Glenvue Nursing Home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice after an extended illness. The Tattnall County native had lived in the Jones Community all of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Battle Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, DeWitt Tatum.

Survivors include, son and daughter-in-law, Kennon and Lyndal Tatum of Reidsville; sisters and brother-in-law, Vera and Dwight Tatum of Glennville, Janie Ruth Purcell of Reidsville; grandchildren, Kay and Thomas Wicker of Macon, Ken and Kim Tatum of Reidsville, Kevin and Cathy Tatum of Douglas; nine great-grandchildren, Jared, Caroline and Victoria Wicker; Kay-Lyn and Kameron Tatum, Kitt, Collin, Carrie and Kayla Tatum.

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 1, 2006, at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with Elder W.H. Durrence and Elder Bob Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Battle Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jared Wicker, Kitt Tatum, Kameron Tatum, Collin Tatum, David Brazel and Tyler Trull.

Colonel Gettis Adair Blocker (Ret), 66

Colonel Gettis Adair Blocker (Ret), 66, died Tuesday, November 14, 2006, in Claxton, Ga. The Tattnall County native was a graduate of the University of Georgia, with a B.S. in Psychology, and obtained his Masters degree at Rochester University. He served 29 years in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1991 with a rank of Colonel and numerous decorations as follows, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with 5OLCS, Air Force Commendation Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Longevity Service Award with 6OLCS, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Air Force Overseas Short Tour Ribbon, Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, Air Force Training Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with 4OLCS, Air Force Presidential Unit Citation with 1OLCS, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Device.

After retirement Adair became an avid follower of Georgia Southern Eagles and Georgia Bulldogs.

Survivors include, his wife, Carolyn Faye Blocker of Glennville; sons and daughters-in-law, Gettis Bradd and Deborah Blocker of Waxhaw, NC, John Adair Blocker of Albertville, AL, Brian Scott and Emma Blocker of Denver, NC; four half-brothers and sisters, Owen and Sylvia Todd of Kelseyville, CA, Patty and Steve Mixon of Freeport, FL, Jerry and Janice Grimes of Glennville, Elizabeth and Jim Henderson of Norfolk, VA; seven grandchildren, Amanda Faye Blocker, Jordan Adair Blocker, Malcolm Alexander Blocker, Bailey Elizabeth Blocker, Elisabeth Rose Blocker, Joshua Lambert Blocker and Lily Caroline Blocker.

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services were held on Friday, November 17, 2006, at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James H. Crockett officiating. Burial followed in Glennville City Cemetery with full military honors.

Chloe Ann DeFore, 7 months

Little Miss Chloe Ann DeFore, 7 months passed away Thursday afternoon, November 16, 2006, at Egleston Children’s Hospital in Atlanta.

Chloe had lived in Reidsville all of her life and attended Collins Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfathers, Donnie DeFore and Bill Morrow.

She is survived by her parents, Tim and Anna DeFore of Reidsville; a sister, Destiny DeFore of Collins; maternal grandparents, Jean Wrenn of Collins and Lanier and Cynthia Branch of Baxley; paternal grandmother, Mary Morrow of Forsyth; great-grandparents, Mrs. Rabun Wrenn of Collins, Yvonne Branch of Baxley, Miller Turner of Forsyth; aunts and uncles, Jonathan Branch of Collins, Victoria and Christopher Crosby of Baxley, Jeff and Jody DeFore and Jennifer and Todd Rivers, all of Forsyth; numerous other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Jeff DeFore, Todd Rivers, Shane Reeves and Stewart Reeves.

Funeral services were held Sunday, November 19, 2006, at Collins Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Page and Rev. Steve Kimbrell officiating. Interment followed in the Collins Baptist Church cemetery.

Florence Addie Mae Stewart Libson, 91

Florence Addie Mae Stewart Libson (“Sister”) was born on April 16, 1915, (her twin, Clarence preceded her in death), to the late John and Melvina Stewart. She was married to Mr. Hosey Libson, who preceded her in death. To this union nine children were born, two preceded her in death, Hosey Libson, Jr. and Betty Williams.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory, five sons, Clarence (Chevy), Herman, Paul (Harriette) all of Glennville, GA; Charlie of Stewart, FL, and Chipel (grandchild) raised as a son, of Kingston, NC; two daughters, Dianne Glasco of Roslyn Heights, NY and Vondell Libson of Savannah, GA; two sisters, Marie Gibbs of Waycross, GA and Leola Nobles of Brunswick, GA; 16 lovely grandchildren, Cassandra, Lamont, Dena, Kenya, Esmond, Sa’sha, Corey, Kendral, Shawn, Brandon, Makayla, Steven, Tomika, Ebony, Robin and Latoya; a host of great-grands, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She will be dearly missed by a dear and long-time friend, Mrs. Henretta Coley.

Walter “Stoke” Rogers, 84

Mr. Walter “Stoke” Rogers, 84, passed away Saturday morning, November 18, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville all of his life. He was a farmer and of the Freewill Baptist Faith. He loved to fish and hunt.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Sunday, November 19, 2006, at Reidsville City Cemetery with Rev. Sterling Bargeron officiating.

Geneva Nail Scott, 94

Geneva Nail Scott, 94, passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2006, at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, GA. She was born February 15, 1912, in Collins, Tattnall County, Georgia, to James Benjamin Nail and Zera Godbee Nail. She lived in Tattnall County until six years ago when she moved to Magnolia Estates and Assisted Living Retirement Center in Bogart, Georgia.

She was a graduate of Collins High School and Georgia Teachers College of Statesboro (now Georgia Southern University). She taught in the Tattnall County School System for 32 years. She was a member of the Reidsville Baptist Church, the Joy Sunday School Class and the Sunshine Club and the Tattnall County Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Nathaniel Scott.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley S. and Earl McCorkle of Bogart; granddaughter, Eve McCorkle Seawright and her husband, David W. of Watkinsville; grandson, Dr. Van S. McCorkle and his wife, Dr. Ingrid Newman of Bogart; great-grandsons, David V. Seawright of Athens, Chad S. Seawright of Watkinsville, and Charles S. McCorkle of Bogart; great-granddaughter, Grace McCorkle of Bogart; a sister and brother-in-law, Estelle Nail Drake and Dr. Charles H. Drake of Glennville; several nieces and nephews.

Benjamin Franklin “B.F.” Sikes, 74

Benjamin Franklin “B.F.” Sikes, 74, died Tuesday, November 14, 2006, in Atlanta. The Candler County native graduated Metter High School in 1949, and then from the Georgia Military College, with a Liberal Arts Degree in 1952. He went on to the University of Georgia and graduated with a B.S. Degree in 1955 and then to Mercer University, in Macon, GA, and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Education, in 1963. He served two years in the military, stationed in Friedberg, Germany, where he met Lucy Weyrauch, whom he married on December 15, 1957, in Metter. He was a teacher and Principal for the Hillview Elementary Schools, Collins High School, and Glennville Elementary Schools. He was also elected five times as Superintendent of Schools for Tattnall County, serving Reidsville, Glennville, Collins, and Cobbtown. He was a member of the Metter First Baptist Church and a former member of the Glennville First Baptist Church, where he was an ordained deacon, chairman of deacons, and Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Lucy Weyrauch Sikes; parents Graham and Zelma Jarriel Sikes, brother, A.D. Sikes and sister-in-law, Frances Chapman Sikes.

Survivors include: aunts, Billie Maniatty, of Decatur, Evelyn Bryant, of Lyons, Corine Lynn, of Savannah, and Reba Sikes, of Claxton; a host of cousins; nephew, Wayne and Kathy Hart, of Metter; great-nephew, Roland and Melanie Hart, of Metter; and great- great niece, Margo Hart.

Funeral Services were held Saturday, November 18, 2006 at Morgan Family Funeral Home, with burial in the Lake Cemetery.

James “Hammer” Sikes, 64

Mr. James “Hammer” Sikes, 64, of Collins, passed away Monday afternoon, November 20, 2006, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia.

Charles L. Swindell, 75

Charles L. Swindell, 75, passed away Friday, November 17, 2006 at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of his life. He was a Korean War Army Veteran, a member of Glennville V.F.W. Post #8379, and the American Legion #95, a former Glennville City Council member, serving 12 years and was employed with the Glennville Ford Motor Dealerships for 30 years. He was a member and deacon of Glennville First Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Iris O. Swindell of Glennville; children, Mary Ann Matthews of Greensboro, N.C. and Jimmy Hoover of Concord, N.C.; sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Jackie Holland of Ludowici, GA; brother-in-law, D. A. DeLoach of Longwood, FL; sister-in-law, Margie Bogucki of Orlando, FL; granddaughters, Courtney Cook and Christy Hulsey; great-grandchildren, Katie and Abbi Hulsey. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral Services were held Sunday, November 19, 2006 at Glennville First Christian Church, with Rev. Jim Crockett and Rev. Jack Hudson officiating. Burial followed in the Glennville City Cemetery with Military Honors.

Pallbearers were, Brent Walker, Richard Bradley Jr., Louis Geiger, Dicky Dixon, Jesse Durrence, and Ricky Burkhalter.

Vernon Todd, 87

Vernon Todd, 87, died Saturday, November 18, 2006. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of his life. He was employed during World War II as a shipbuilder, a farmer and worked with the Georgia Department of Transportation for many years. He was a member of Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church and is preceded in death by a daughter, Verna Dean Todd and two grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Janie Todd of Glennville; daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Gerald Malcom of Monroe, Patricia and Robert Driggers of Macon; sisters, Vondell Lindsey of Baltimore, MD and Louise Todd of Savannah; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, with Elder W. H. Durrence officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Todd, Eddie Todd, Steven Todd, Wayne Todd, Robert Driggers Jr., and Brent Driggers.

Lonnie Frank Bagley, Sr.

Mr. Lonnie Frank Bagley, Sr., of Swainsboro, GA, died Thursday morning, November 9, 2006, at the Carl Vinson Veterans Hospital in Dublin. Mr. Bagley, born in Emanuel County, was retired from the city of Swainsboro after many years of service. He served in the United States Air Force, was a member of Mt. Shady Baptist Church and an avid sportsman.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lacey J. Bagley, and a son, Lonnie Frank Bagley, Jr.

He is survived by two daughters, Norma Jean Pye of Reidsville and Karen Elizabeth Erter of Dallas, TX; six grandchildren, Adam Pye of Reidsville, Dillon Pye of Reidsville, Jessica Erter of Dallas, Zachary Erter, Candace Erter, and Carolina Erter, all of Dallas, TX; and one niece.

Memorial services were Sunday afternoon, November 12, in the chapel of Tomlinson Funeral Home with Rev. Louis Pearce officiating.

Ernestine Mixon Durrence Hill, 87

Ernestine Mixon Durrence Hill passed away Thursday, November 9, 2006, under the care of Hospice of the West in Orange, California. She was born on June 15, 1919, to Eugene and Evalina O’Quinn in the Low Country of South Carolina. She had lived in Orange, California for the past five years and was a retired school teacher, having taught in Glennville and Garden Grove for over 30 years. She was a member of Glennville First Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husbands, Lonnie Harris Durrence and James (Jim) Hill.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and John Moore of Orange, CA, Betty Ann and Michael Laurs of Jacksonville, OR, Elaine and Danny Strickland of Glennville; eight grandchildren, David Moore of El Cajon, CA, Susan Moore Blaisdell of Victor, NY, Sharon Moore-Eller of Aurora, CO, Michael Mason of San Francisco, CA, Gary Zawada of San Francisco, CA, Donald and Vivian Mason of Seattle, WA, Lee and Julia Domenick of Lakewood, OH, and Jarrod and Sandra Domenick of Ladson, SC. Ten grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 17, 2006, at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith Rustin and Rev. Lee Domenick officiating. Burial will follow in Glennville Cemetery.

Infant Precious Kamaria Johnson passed away Thursday, November 9, 2006, at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, GA.

Surviving are her mother, Ladeccia Hicks of Hinesville; father, Shannon Johnson of Savannah; maternal grandparents, Earl and Gwitha Warren, of Hinesville; paternal grandparents, James and Carolyn Johnson of Savannah.

A graveside service was held Sunday, November 12, 2006, at Robert Chapel Cemetery in Tison.

Little Miss Marlen Arroyo, 2, passed away early Sunday morning, November 5, 2006, at Memorial Health Center after a courageous battle against cancer. The Evans County native had lived in Reidsville all of her life and was a member of Igelisia Baustista Nueva Vida in Reidsville.

She is survived by her parents, Roberto and Paula Arroyo of Reidsville; brother, Daniel Arroyo of Reidsville; sister, Annabel Arroyo of Reidsville; paternal grandmother, Alejandra Patricio of Mexico; Maternal grandmother, Josefa Hernandez of Mexico; Several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins also survive.

Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, November 7, 2006, at the Reidsville Baptist Church with Rev. Alex Esquivel and Bro. Jesus Angel officiating. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Daniel Arroyo, Sergio Aldama, Juan Arroyo, and Porfirio Arroyo.

Howard D. Bass, 44

Howard D. Bass, 44, passed away Tuesday, October 31, 2006, in the evening at Meadows Regional Medical Center. The Germany native had lived in Florida before moving to Reidsville 22 years ago. He was a licensed pipe fitter and was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Catherine Bass.

He is survived by, his father, Mr. Jack T. “Sam” Bass of Reidsville and brother, George R. Bass of Round Rock, Texas.

Graveside Funeral Services were held on Friday, November 4, 2006, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Reverend Jesse Browning officiating.

Naomie R. Durrence, 69

Naomie “Peaky” R. Durrence passed away Saturday, November 4, 2006, at Meadows Regional Medical Center. She was born April 19, 1937, in West Virginia and moved to Arkansas at age 12. She married Jackey Durrence at age 17 and resided in Tattnall County. She was a wonderful wife, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was greatly loved by all those who knew her. Though she was taken too soon from her family’s lives, she will always be in their hearts. They will love her always. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten. She was preceded in death by her sons, Randy and Joey Durrence.

She is survived by, husband, Jackey Durrence of Glennville; daughters and sons-in-law, Shanda and Pete Medlin, Mindy and Anthony James, all of Glennville; son, Mark Durrence of Glennville; sisters, Dreama, Veda, and Tutty and brother, Buddy, all of Mena, Arkansas; ten grandchildren, Tisha (Jesse) Lott, Jonathan Medlin, Paige, Maggie and Summer James, Jason Durrence Bland, Justin Bland, Daniel Durrence, Amy Medlin, Tina Medlin; three great-grandchildren, Hannah and Devin Medlin, and Jacob Lott. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services were held Monday, November 6, 2006, at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel with Elder W.H. Durrence and Rev. Oscar Rowe Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Beards Creek Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Deacons of Loves Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.

Robert (Pop) Hollis, Jr., 78

Robert (Pop) Hollis, Jr., 78, died Tuesday, October 31, 2006. The Dougherty county native moved to this area from Savannah in 1995. He was employed as a machinist and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Brant Hollis.

He is survived by, daughter and son-in-law, Sherrie and Craig Thompson of Glennville; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Hollis of Reidsville, David and Linda Hollis of Reidsville, Allen and Denise Hollis of Glennville; sister, Betty Long of Garden City; 14 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 3 at Oak Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Morgan officiating. Burial followed at Hillcrest Abbey East in Savannah.

Pallbearers were Glen Spikes, Raneldo Boyd, Ernie Stanfield, Glenn Smith, Rodney Johnson, and Michael Johnson.

Honorary Pallbearers were members of the Ohoopee Hunting Club.

Tammy Outlaw Nobles, 40

Tammy Outlaw Nobles, 40, died Wednesday, November 1, 2006, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. The Dade County, Florida, native had lived in this area most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Pigott Branch Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Joyce Outlaw.

She is survived by, her husband, Charles Nobles of Ludowici; children, Thomas Chase Nobles of Ludowici, Steven Mark Taber of Kansas City, MO, Eddie Fergerson Fulton of Glennville, Amber Nicole Nobles of Glennville, and Candis Nobles Polk of Douglas; sisters, Sherrie Jo Miller of Kentucky and Julie Cranford of Glennville; brothers, John Wayne Outlaw of Glennville, Jeffery Bryan Outlaw of Glennville and Kerry Vaughn of Statesboro; and three grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held Friday, November 3, 2006, at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with Rev. Tim Jerritt officiating. Burial followed in the Pigott Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. David Teasdell, age 81, passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2006, at the Glenvue Nursing Home.

Jack Russell Welch, 79

Mr. Jack Russell Welch, 79, passed away early Friday morning, November 3, 2006, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia. The Jefferson County native had lived in Savannah many years until moving to Reidsville twenty years ago. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and retired from Southern Bell, now known as Bell South, after 37 years of service.

He is survived by, his wife, Clara Iddins Welch of Reidsville; son and daughter-in-law, Rusty and Valarie Welch of Reidsville; daughter, Paula W. Arden of Rincon; five grandchildren, David and Kellie Arden of Guyton, Daniel Arden and Laura and Sean Berry, all of Rincon, Adam and Heidi Welch and Andrea Welch all of Reidsville; brother, John Welch of Reidsville; two nephews and three nieces also survive.

Funeral Services were held on Sunday, November 5 in the Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home Chapel.

Tommy Anderson, 48, died Wednesday afternoon, October 25, 2006, in Reidsville. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville all of his life. He attended the Reidsville Church of God. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Sue Anderson, and sister, Debra Jean Perez.

He is survived by, three daughters, Latisha Anderson, Ashley Anderson, both of Ludowici, Angel Anderson of Glennville; son, Tommy Lee Anderson of Ludowici; parents, Louis and Patsy Anderson of Reidsville; brother, Bobby Anderson of Reidsville; sisters, Velvet Juarez, Brenda Nopal, Betty Ramirez, Barbara Guiterrez, Diane Savai and Maria Corona, all of Reidsville; six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services were held Sunday, October 29 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Hardy Crosby officiating. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.

Fannie Carter, 87

Fannie Carter, 87, died Saturday, October 28, 2006 at Glenvue Nursing Home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The native of Germany had lived in Savannah for many years prior to moving to Glennville 46 years ago. She was retired from Rotary Corporation and a member of Glennville First Baptist Church.

She is survived by: daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Charles Simmons of Glennville and June and Wendell McCoy of Claxton; son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Susan Carter of Augusta; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 30, 2006 at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Keith Rustin officiating. Burial followed in Glennville Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers included: Darby Stephens, Greg Stephens, Jack Carter, Derek Carter, Shane McCoy, and Aldon Graham.

Marvin Guy Cowart, 62

Mr. Marvin Guy Cowart, 62, died Sunday morning, October 29, 2006. The Tattnall county native lived most of his life there. He worked several years for The Country Gentlemen Barber Shop in Claxton before starting his own business in Collins, Marvin’s Barber Shop. He was devoted to visiting his homebound customers, as well as those in the hospital and nursing homes. He was a member of Rogers Baptist Church. He loved to spend time with his family and enjoyed helping other people.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Mellie Sue Collins Cowart, of the Hillview Community; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Tracie Newman, of Stillmore and Vander and Christy Cowart, of Metter; daughter: Marsha Cowart, of Statesboro; sisters, Vivian Wilson, of the Hillview Community, Lula Jean Spaminato, of Statesboro, and Dana Brown, of Claxton; Burley Beasley, of St. Mary’s Florida; mother-in-law: Mae Collins, of Hillview and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at Rogers Baptist Church with burial following in the Church Cemetery

Sam Greene, 82

Mr. Sam Greene, 82, of the Hillview Community near Claxton, died Wednesday, October 28, 2006 at his home. He was born in Candler County, the son of Jim A. Greene and Anna McGahee Greene and had lived most of his life in Tattnall County. He was a farmer and an Army veteran serving in WWII. He was a member and Deacon of the Evergreen Baptist Church and former teacher of the Junior Sunday School class. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vera Lanier Greene and a son, Jimmy Greene.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Cartee Greene of the Hillview Community; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Gina Greene of Hillview and Jeff and Debra Greene of Columbus, SC; step-son, George Greene of Cobbtown; step-daughters, Ann G. Akins of Portal, Joyce G. Lively and Janice G. Harris, both of Cobbtown; brother, Louis Greene of Cobbtown; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Friday, October 27, 2006, at Evergreen Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Military honors were observed.

Pallbearers included: George Greene, Sandy Sanders, Harvey Lively, Howard West, Robert West and Greene Thrift. Honorary Pallbearers were Deacons of the Evergreen Baptist Church.

Paul Amos Nelson, 87

Paul Amos Nelson, 87, was born in Hartford, Conn., May 8, 1919. He died October 26, 2006, in Dallas, TX

His father, Willam. E. (“Uncle Willie” in Reidsville), was a Methodist missionary in Angola, West Africa, 1920-25, where younger brother, Stephen, was born in 1921.

The Nelson family was associated with the early days of the Nelson Hotel in Reidsville.

Before retiring in Dallas, Paul was sales VP for Virginia Chemicals Co. and had served as infantry officer in World War II.

He is survived by two sons, John Paul (Fla.) and Barry (Dallas). Also, by daughter Patti Nelson Miller, (N.Miami Beach).




Justin Adam Weaver, 17

Justin Adam Weaver, 17, passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at his residence after a life long illness. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville all of his life, and attended Tattnall County High School.

He is survived by, mother, Susan Weaver of Reidsville; brother, Shane Weaver of Glendale, AZ; special friend and father figure, Claude Poulin of Reidsville; grandparents, John and Betty Quick of Reidsville; uncles, Gary Weaver of New Berlin, NY, Robert Weaver and Lee Quick, Jr., both of FL; aunts, Sandra (Ron) Rush, Donna Smith, Christine Weaver, all of Reidsville, Patricia (Ron) Cook of Lee Center, NY. Several cousins also survive.

Funeral Services were Saturday, October 28, 2006 at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home, Reidsville Chapel, with Rev. Jerald Dorr officiating. Burial followed in Reidsville City Cemetery.

Pallbearers included: Claude Poulin, John Lee Quick, Jr., Shane Weaver, Johnny Millirones, Brian Smith, and Scott Smith.
