Obituaries for January 25, 2007 Syndle E. Kicklighter, 81 Syndle E. Kicklighter, 81, of Brunswick died on Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at Southeast Georgia Health System. The Tattnall County native was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II, and had lived in Glennville most of his life, moving to Brunswick four years ago. He was a farmer and a member of Glennville Free Will Baptist Church and attended Glendale Baptist Church while in Brunswick. He is survived by his wife, Claudine T. Kicklighter of Brunswick; daughter, Brenda Kicklighter of Brunswick; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Harriet Kicklighter of Glennville; sister, Wanda Kinard of Jesup; brother, Lowell Kicklighter of Hinesville; two grandchildren, Mandy Kicklighter of Brunswick and Paul Kicklighter of Gainesville, GA; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 20, 2007, at the chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home in Glennville with Rev. Ken Creekmore officiating. Burial followed in Glennville City Cemetery. George William Lane, Sr., 65 George William Lane, Sr., age 65, passed into eternal rest Friday morning, January 19, 2007, at Tattnall Health Care Center. He was a Reidsville native and served in the United States Air Force for several years, where he received an Honorable Discharge. He was a handyman by trade. He was preceded in death by his son, George W. (Chuckie) Lane, Jr.; his parents Retha Lovett Holmes, William K. Lane and Surrena K. Small; a brother, Joseph Small and his long time companion, Annie Bell Mincey. He is survived by his daughters: Stephanie L. (Samuel) Murphy of Reidsville, Cheryl D. (Tommy) Jones of Columbus, GA and Sheila B. Obituaries for January 18, 2007 Charles Bacon, 56 Charles Bacon, 56, passed away Monday morning, January 15, 2007, at the Community Hospice in Vidalia. The Toombs County native had lived in Reidsville for 15 years, recently moving back to Vidalia. He was retired from the Farm Service Division of the Georgia Department of Corrections. He was a member of Hope Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Dianne Bacon and his parents, J.C. and Hazel Bacon. He is survived by his son, Lee and Jennifer Bacon of Reidsville; two daughters, Rachel Ailstock of Pratt, Kansas and Amanda Bacon and Sylvester Singleton of Lyons; a brother Fred Bacon of Vidalia; two sisters, Renee Gaskins of Nashville, GA and Melanie Taylor of Vidalia; an aunt, Bobbie Callahan of Lyons; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many beloved friends. Pallbearers were Mitch Taylor, Brian Smith, Gerald Cox, Bob Bacon, Stanley Holland and Chris Crawford. Edward Sterling Bargeron, 74 Edward Sterling Bargeron, 74, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2007. The Toombs County native had lived in Texas and Savannah for many years before moving to Glennville eight years ago. He was retired from Union Camp Corporation. He is survived by his wife, Linda Bargeron, of Reidsville; children, Leah and Gene Luke, of Griffin; James S. Bargeron, of Valdosta; Allen Bargeron, of Abilene, TX; and Mimi Ingle, of Cumming; stepson, Barry McGlashan, of Glennville; sister, Geraldine Fox (Phil) of Merritt Island,, FL; brothers, George Bargeron (Cynthia) of Ellabelle and Charlie Bargeron of Fruitland Park, FL; 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2:30 P.M., Saturday, January 13, 2007, at the Chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home in Reidsville with Reverend Jeff Spencer officiating. Maxine Boles Bruner, 85 Mrs. Maxine Boles Bruner, 85, passed away on January 15, 2007. Mrs. Bruner was born in Stokes County, North Carolina on October 23, 1921. She was preceded in death by her father, William Benjamin Boles; her mother, Edith Owen Boles; her brothers, Tom and Bus Boles; her sister, Carrie Boles; and her grandson, John Michael Bruner. During the years she ran her beauty shop and raised her children, she found time to be a member, President, and a study leader for both the Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Women’s Auxiliary. Mrs. Bruner’s hobbies were gardening, sewing, canning, reading Civil War history and cooking. The loves of her life were her great-grandchildren who fondly referred to her as “Ping,” a name by which she became known to most everyone. Mrs. Bruner will be remembered for her knowledge of the Bible, her beautiful handcraft work, her gardening, her exceptional cooking, her love of Civil War history, her stubbornness and her love of life. She mothered and ministered to many, including all of those who were members of her Sunday School Classes and Bible School classes during the 42 years she was a teacher at the First Christian Church of Glennville. She is survived by her children, Sandi Bruner and Annette Ford of Fayetteville, GA; Dianne and Billy Crapps of Glennville; Tom and Rochelle Bruner of Pensacola, FL; her grandchildren, Monica and Stacy Howard; Misti and Wes Kicklighter, all of Glennville; Chris and Kathy Bruner; Sonya and Tyler Pickett, all of Pensacola, FL; great-grandchildren, Dalton Howard, Chalmus Kicklighter, Reagan Kicklighter and Bonnie Bruner and several nieces, nephews, and loving friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at 11:00 a.m., at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend James Crockett and Reverend Jack Hudson officiating. Corene Cannon, 96 Mrs. Corene Cannon, 96, passed away Monday morning at the Tattnall Community Hospital. The Cobbtown native had lived in Reidsville most of her life and was retired after 30 years of service from the Rotary Corporation. She was a member of the Reidsville United Methodist Church and the Tommy Thompson Sunday School Class. Mrs. Cannon was preceded in death by her husband, Buster Cannon and her son-in-law, Bill Nelson. She is survived by her daughter, Helen C. Nelson of Reidsville; grandson, Ed (Jeannie) Nelson of Glennville; granddaughters, Tara (Don) Martin and Traci Heilman all of Reidsville; great grandchildren, Ashley Nelson, Laura (Will) Maybin, Olivia Nelson, Austin, Caylee, Tyler and Avery Martin and Courtney, Landon and Blake Heilman. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services was held Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at the Reidsville United Methodist Church with Reverends Doug Walker and David Hudson officiating. John H. (Jimmy) Marcum, Jr., 44 Mr. John H. (Jimmy) Marcum, Jr., 44, was called to his heavenly home on Saturday, January 13, 2007, where he was met at the pearly gates by his dad, Revis Turner. Jimmy was a graduate of the class of 1980 of Glennville High School, a Mason and member of Ezel Lodge 335 F&AM in Claxton, a member of Sons of the Confederate Veterans Tattnall Invincible Camp #154. He was employed by Claxton Oil Company and attended Harmony United Methodist Church. Hunting and fishing brought joy to his life. Jimmy leaves his wife, Tami Marcum, to cherish the love they shared. He also leaves his mother, Evelyn Turner of Glennville to remember him as her special, loving son. Jimmy was the baby brother to sisters Brenda Waters of Glennville, Polly Cowart of Reidsville, DeAnn Odum and Pam Griggers of Lyons; step-children, Tara and Lewis Van Meter of Glennville. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends will have an empty space in their lives that he once filled. For the past year of Jimmy’s life, his heart was filled with love and happiness. Lee Ann Purvis Smith, 50 Mrs. Lee Ann Purvis Smith, 50, passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2007, at her residence. The Tattnall County native lived in Glennville all of her life. She was a 1974 Graduate of Glennville High School and was employed with the Tattnall County Tax Commissioner, Tattnall County Clerk of Courts and Georgia Department of Corrections at Rogers State Prison for many years before retiring. She was a member of Glennville Church of God where she was active in the Women’s Ministry. She was preceded in death by her father, Harry Lee Purvis. She is survived by her husband, Donald J. Smith of Lyons; her mother, Vernice Purvis; a sister, Kelly Brown; a nephew, Matthew Brown, all of Glennville; brothers-in-law, Wayne (Sophie) Smith of Lyons and Sammy (Sheri) Smith of Albany; an uncle, several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Jane Hodges West, 91 Jane Hodges West, 91, died Monday, January 15, 2007, at her home under hospice care. The Candler Co. native lived all of her life in the Evergreen Community. She was a homemaker who loved to take care of her family and children. She was an active member of Evergreen Baptist Church for 78 years, where she served as Sunday School teacher of the Primary Class for 35 years, as well as many other positions. She was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and very active on the Hospitality Committee. She also loved to play the piano and harmonica and sing in the church choir. She loved to garden and work in her flowers and yards. She was predeceased by her husband, D.C. West in 1968, her parents, Henry Leonard Hodges and Anna Brown Hodges, a son-in-law, John W. Sikes and a grandson, John W. Sikes, Jr., who both died in 1982. Survivors: daughters and son-in-law, Marjorie Ann Hursey, formerly of Jacksonville, FL, Carolyn W. Sikes, of Savannah, and Betty W. and David Carlson, of Dawson; son and daughter-in-law: Robert L. and Becky West, of Evergreen Community; grandchildren: Steven Hursey, formerly of Jacksonville, FL, Danny Sikes, of Pooler, Scott Carlson and Terry Carlson, both of Tifton, Chris and Monica West, of Metter, and Jason West, of Evergreen Community; great-grandsons, Garrett Carlson and Tate West; two nieces and one nephew. Obituaries for January 11, 2007 Edwin “Ed” Cannon Bland, 64 Mr. Edwin “Ed” Cannon Bland, 64, died Friday, January 5, 2007, at University Hospital in Augusta. He was born in Jacksonville, FL, the son of Thomas Horner and Marion C. Bland. He had lived Martinez for the past 13 years and was a retired computer specialist with the U.S. Government Services. Mr. Bland served in the Marine Corps for nine years and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star while serving two tours in Vietnam. He was a beloved husband and father who loved to rebuild old cars as a hobby. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Tommy Bland. He is survived by his wife, Sara V. Bland and a son, Robert Charles Bland both of Martinez; sister, Jean Miller of Claxton; sister-in-law, Joan Bland of Collins; several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 6, 2007, at Primitive Grove Cemetery near Metter with Military Honors observed. Patsy Sikes Blocker, 57 Patsy Sikes Blocker, 57, died Tuesday, January 2, 2007, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Evans County. The Tattnall County native was a homemaker and a member of Northside Baptist Church. She is survived by: husband, Charles Blocker of Glennville; daughter, Tracy R. Jenkins of Glennville; son, Davis Johnson of Glennville; step-son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Carla Blocker of Glennville; brothers and sister-in-law, Ronald Sikes of Glennville and Kenny and Susan Sikes of Atlanta; six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews also survive. Hugh M. Driggers, 90 Hugh M. Driggers, 90, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2007, at Glenvue Nursing Home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Tattnall County native was a retired farmer and a member of Ebenezer Free Will Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by three children; Marvis Driggers, Angie Howard, Larry Driggers and his wife, Vernice Driggers. He is survived by: daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Lenwood Eason of Glennville and Debbie and Dale Dutton of Glennville; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Patsy Driggers of Macon, Jimmy and Katha Driggers and Juan and Chrissy Driggers, all of Glennville; sisters, Lois Bacon of Glennville and Iris Todd of Savannah; brother, Frank Driggers of Savannah; 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Era K. Harvey, 87 Mrs. Era K. Harvey, 87, passed away Wednesday morning, January 3, 2007, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native had lived in Collins all of her life before moving to North Springs Assisted Living in Claxton three years ago. She was retired from the Reidsville High School as a food service worker. She was a member of Rome Primitive Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Harvey and a grandson, Michael Harvey. She is survived by three daughters, Hilda Holton of Reidsville, Jean Futch of Milledgeville and Patsy Brown of Collins; a son, Danny Harvey of Collins; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Jay Futch, Jan Kennedy, Donald Akins, Chad Waters, Avery Sapp, and Bobby Kennedy. Funeral services were held Friday, January 5, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Bradley B. Frank Elmer Ritchie, 94 Frank Elmer Ritchie, 94, of Reidsville died January 7, 2007. He was the former business owner of Reidsville Western Auto Store and a dedicated member of the Lions Club with 50 years of perfect attendance. Mr. Ritchie’s last three years were lived at the Riverview Rehabilitation Center in Savannah where he remained a kind, loving gentlemen despite his many handicaps. He cherished his many friends and held his family close to his heart. He is much loved and missed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth and his son, Bob Ritchie. Survivors include: nieces, Christine Sharpes, Marilyn Reed, Betty Barber, Mary Alice Queen, Anne Sanders, Jean Grabley and Susan Nesbit; nephews, Johnny Barber, Ronald Kinzie and William Forbes. Mr. Ritchie enthusiastically looked forward to moving to Las Cruces, New Mexico with his niece, Christina Sharpes. Grady Smiley, 90 Grady Smiley, 90, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2007, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Pearce County native had lived in Glennville most of his life. He was retired Civil Service at Ft. Stewart, a life long member of Glennville First Christian Church and an avid outdoorsman. He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Madie Driggers Smiley. He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Reginald and Martha Smiley of Acworth; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Ford Stone of Savannah; sisters, Rozzie Cook of Baxley and Mary Boyd of Pooler; five grandchildren, Denise Drennan of Kennesaw, GA, Allison Reed of Martinsville, VA, Vicki Massey and Leslie McDaniel, both of Atlanta, and Bert Rahn of Brunswick. Six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, January 9, 2007, at the Chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home with Rev. James H. Charlie C. Wedincamp, 65 Charlie C. Wedincamp, 65, died Tuesday, January 2, 2007, at his home at the Masonic Children’s Camp after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded is death by his parents, Grady and Malliveen Wedincamp, and his beloved brother, Grady Wedincamp, Jr. He was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was devoted to his Masonic teachings and to caring for the Masonic Children’s Camp. His love for his family, friends and the children at the Masonic Home in Macon was an inspiration to those who knew him. No task was too great if it meant he could help a friend. He is survived by: his wife of 37 years, Marjorie Wedincamp of Shellman Bluff; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lee Ann and Scott Schuyler of Sylvania, Charlotte and Joe Hall of Glennville, and Debbie and Craig Wittig of Friendswood, TX; brother, Billy Wedincamp; sister, Linda Watkins; and four grandchildren, Diana, Sarah, Joshua, and Chad. The Virginia native had lived in Florida for many years, moving to Glennville 22 years ago. She was employed in the school system in Florida for many years and was a homemaker. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ballance Sr. Her survivors include her children, Charlene Balses of Jacksonville, FL, Pam Nelson of Williston, FL, Sharon Mullis of Dexter, GA, Karen Whener of Dublin, GA, Charles E. Balance Jr. Ballance of Jackson, MS; 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Bobby M. Dubberly, 71 Bobby M. Dubberly, 71, passed away Friday, December 29, 2006, at his residence. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of his life. He was retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections and a member of Peace Officers Association of Georgia. He owned and operated Dubberly’s Hen House Restaurant and was a member of Pigott Branch Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Barney and Tavic Dubberly, and his wife, Sandra Dubberly. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Darlene Dubberly, Timmy and Brenda Dubberly, and Tony and Marie Dubberly, all of Glennville; brother, Bennie Dubberly of Glennville; grandchildren, Jason, Amber, and Tina Dubberly all of Glennville. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services were held Sunday, December 31, 2006 in the Chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Bill Cox. Burial followed in Pigott Branch Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ronnie Shoemaker, Matt Terrell, Lee Dubberly, Matt Jasinski, Drew Thompson, and Tony Blanton. Derrell M. Fennell, 65 Derrell M. Fennell, 65, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2006 at Liberty Regional Medical Center. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville and Long County most of his life. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was retired from Union Camp Corporation and attended First United Pentecostal Church. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Helen B. Fennell of Glennville; daughters and son-in-law, Katina Fennell, Gala and Matt Jasinski all of Glennville; grandson, Diego Jasinski of Glennville; sister, Gail Owens of Claxton; sister-in-law, Joyce Fennell of Glennville. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside Funeral Services were held Wednesday, January 3, 2007, at Pigott Branch Church Cemetery with Rev. James M. Holland officiating. Pallbearers were, David Fennell, Daniel Fennell, Dana Fennell, Craig Burkhalter, Brad Pickren, and Steven Owens. Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home of Glennville was in charge of the arrangements.
Raleigh Lucious “GrandPa” Griffin Sr., 96 Raleigh Lucious “GrandPa” Griffin Sr., 96, passed away December 27, 2006, at his lifelong home in Evans County Mr. Griffin was the longest and oldest living member of Rehoboth Baptist Church, where he also served as a Deacon and served as treasurer for over 40 years. He was very devoted to his Christian family at Rehoboth. He was a retired farmer and a former employee of Claxton Poultry Farms for a number of years. Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ollie Mae Denton Griffin, and his son, Raleigh L. Griffin Jr. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Walter Smith and Shirley and William Smith, all of Bellville; one daughter-in-law, Loette Salter Griffin of Claxton; seven grandchildren, Jerry and Ann Griffin, Donna and Ray Odom, Connie and Scott Barnett, Karen and Bobby Blocker, Randy and Pam Smith, Sharon and Chris DeLoach, and Michael and Michelle Smith; 15 great-grandchildren, Haley Griffin, Philip Griffin, Reid Odom, Lacy Odom, Byron Barnett, Brian Blocker, Melissa Blocker, Justin and Alison Smith, Rebecca Smith, Nathan Smith, Landon DeLoach, Sarah DeLoach, Faith Smith, and Audrey Kate Smith. Funeral Services were held on Friday, December 29, at Rehoboth Baptist Church. Eudelle C. Moore, 92 Mrs. Eudelle C. Moore, beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend, died Monday, January 1, 2007, at the age of 92. She was an avid homemaker, gardener, and seamstress. She was an active member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church, member of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class a former teacher of the Immediate Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert A. Moore; son, Glenn Moore Sr.; parents, Bennie and Mary Collins; brother, Gaston Collins; two sisters, Sula M. Collins, and Lila Jean Powell. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Debra Moore Bradley and Eddie Bradley of Jackson, SC; daughter-in-law, Doris Moore; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Glenn Moore Jr. and JoAnn Moore all of Vidalia. She is also survived by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, January 4, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Conley officiating. Burial will be in the Collins Baptist Church Cemetery. W. Glenn Tootle Jr., 85 W. Glenn Tootle Jr., 85, passed way Thursday, December 28, 2006, at Carl Vinson, V.A. Medical Center in Dublin after an extended illness. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of his life. He was a World War II Marine Veteran, serving in the Battle of Iwo Jima where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart and other commendations and awards. He was a member of V.F.W. Post # 8379 and Mendes Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his wife, Nell Weitman Tootle. He is survived by: daughters and son-in-law, LaJeune Fenelle of Glennville, Gaynell and Twiman Garrason of Ludowici; sons and daughters-in-law, Errol and Marion Tootle of Tupelo, MS, Barry and Saralyn Tootle of Glennville; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services were held Sunday, December 30, 2006, in the Chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Eric Rentz and Rev. Carl Ledbetter. Burial followed in Glennville City Cemetery with Military Honors. Pallbearers were David Garrason, Neil Fennell, Jim Tootle, Jeffery Tootle, Richard Dasher, Mark Dasher, Russell Terry Waters, and Kenneth Waters. Betty Jean Whitehead, 76 Mrs. Betty Jean Whitehead, 76, passed away Wednesday morning, December 27, 2006, at her daughter’s residence in Rome. Mrs. Whitehead was born in Tallassee, Alabama on October 13, 1930, daughter of the late Julius Francis Schubert and the late Maudie Belle Scroggins Schubert. She worked for a number of years as a bookkeeper for the W. T. Grant Company. Survivors include her husband, Robert Martin Whitehead; three daughters, Mrs. Carol Chandler and her husband, Stan, Collins, Ms. Debbie Motes, Rome and Ms. Susan Whitehead, Whitesburg; two sons, John Hinman, Douglasville and Mark Whitehead, Whitesburg; eleven grandchildren, Damien Hinman and his wife, Lucianna, Brandon Hinman, Adam Hinman, Kristy Chandler, Jessica Mitchell and her husband, Lee, Austin Chandler, Phillip Pilgrim and his wife, Quincy, Drew Pilgrim, Lindsay Dreher and her husband, Eric, Lisa Whitehead and Michael Whitehead; two great-grandchildren, Isabella Dreher and Avery Pilgrim. Funeral Services were held Friday, December 29, 2006, in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Alan Fuller officiating. Interment followed in East View Cemetery. Pallbearers were Drew Pilgrim, Phillip Pilgrim, Austin Chandler, Damian Hinman, Brandon Hinman, Michael Whitehead, Eric Dreher and Lee Mitchell.
