Mattie Lou Conley, 81

Mattie Lou Conley, 81, passed away January 28, 2008, at Evans Memorial Hospital. She was a native and life long resident of Evans County. She was a member of Hagan Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard H. Conley.

She is survived by five sons, Charles Conley of Orangeburg, S.C., Junior Conley of Hagan, Frankie Conley of Reidsville, Billy Conley of Glennville and Ellis Conley of Claxton; six daughters, Laverne Cannon of Baxley, Shirley Crosby of Walterboro, SC, Joyce Harrell of Glennville, Betty Sue Riggs of Statesboro, Kathy Cason of Glennville and Pansy Smith of Hagan; two brothers, Herman Cowart of Florida and Bennie Cowart of Texas; 24 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 31, at 2:00 p.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Travis Cowart officiating.

Burial will follow at Brewton Cemetery. Pallbearers are Joey Smith, Levi Smith, Ronnie Cason, Kenny Cannon, Harry Conley and Cliff Conley.

Sadie Stubbs Durrence, 94

Sadie Stubbs Durrence, 94, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2008, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of her life. She was employed with the Tattnall County School System and the Mascot Pecan Company for many years. She was a member of Loves Chapel Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garney Durrence and children, Jewitte, Eldridge and Don Durrence and Monaree Holton.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dyril and Rosie Durrence of Glennville; daughters and son-in-law, Maridean Salter of Glennville, Sue Nell and Ralph Keezer of Okeechobee, FL, and Willene Autry of Savannah; sisters, Jetti T. Howard and Montez Todd of Glennville, Nadine Anderson and Jean Deal both of Reidsville and Inez Hughes of Collins; brothers, Bill Stubbs of Collins, Herman T. Stubbs of Reidsville and Henry H. Stubbs of Niva, MO; 26 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 28, 2008, at 11 a.m. the Chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home with Elder W.H. Durrence and Elder Jim Bowen officiating. Burial followed at Loves Chapel Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Dale Salter, Christopher Durrence, Palmer Durrence, William Autry, Randy Keezer and Joe Durrence.

Richard Edwards, 61

Mr. Richard Edwards, 61, entered into rest Tuesday morning, January 22, 2008.

Rich was a resident of the Tattnall-Evans County area for many years after moving here from Coastal North Carolina. Rich grew up in Washington, DC, and attended Assumption Catholic School where he was an altar boy. He then attended Gonzaga and Staunton Military School before attending East Carolina University on a football scholarship. At ECU, he joined Pi Kappa Phi, met his wife Tonya, and graduated with a degree in English.

Rich worked as a teacher, deputy sheriff, and volunteer firefighter at Sunset Beach. Rich left the education field to work in the sales and hydraulic business for the next thirty years before founding his own successful hydraulic company, The Hydraulic Division in Manassas, GA. The Hydraulic Division provides hydraulic solutions and parts for clients worldwide.

Rich is survived by his wife of 39 years, Tonya Lizabeth Gordon Edwards; two sons, Shaun Edwards of Manassas and wife Addie, Kelly Edwards of North Augusta, SC, and wife Mari; one daughter, Kimberly Cone of Key West, FL, and husband Christopher; a brother, Michael Edwards of Glendale, MD and wife Darlene; a brother-in-law, Jim Gordon of Fort Meyers, FL; two grandchildren, Erin Cone and Kristin Cone of Key West, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 25, in the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Marc Foster officiating.

Trianiah Fleming, 3

Little Miss Trianiah Fleming, 3, of Reidsville, passed into eternal rest, Monday, January 21, 2008.

She is survived by her mother, LaKisha Fleming; father Timothy Gardner; sisters, Asia Fleming and Chelese Cornish.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2008, at St. Phillips Baptist Church. Interment followed at Organdy Mills Cemetery.

Ashley Rabon Sapp, 27

Ashley Rabon Sapp, 27, died Friday, January 25, 2008. He was born in Candler County, but lived in Tattnall County all of his life. He was a member of Rehoboth Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael R. Sapp.

He is survived by his mother and step-father, Fonda and Al Jones of Statesboro; one brother, Neil Sapp of Claxton; his maternal grandparents, Harold and Jean Thompson of Claxton, and his paternal grandparents, Rabon and Patsy Sapp of Claxton; three step-sisters, Jessica Cowart of Canton, GA, Yvonne Jones and Sarah Jones, both of Statesboro; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 30 at 11 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home with Rev. David Hagan and Rev. Joe Eason officiating.

Burial followed at Anderson Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Adam Thompson, Paul Thompson, Colby Thompson, Devin Thompson, Alan Sikes and Ashley Stanfield.

George Edwin “Tetsie” Spikes, 79

Mr. George Edwin “Tetsie” Spikes, 79, passed away Sunday morning, January 27, 2008, at his home. He was a retired farmer and a life long resident of Tattnall County. He was a member of Elza Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends. His wife, Christine, and his son, Eddie, preceded him in death.

He is survived by four sisters, Inez Crews of Reidsville, Cora Lee Garrett of Guyton, Jean Morgan of Savannah and Joan Howard of Swainsboro; two brothers, Charles Spikes of Reidsville and Terry Spikes of Lyons; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at Elza Baptist Church with Reverend Ronald Warren and Reverend Kenneth Green officiating. Interment followed at the Reidsville City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Crews, Ricky Howard, Ronnie Spikes, Dennis Spikes, Greg Spikes and Christopher Spikes. Honorary pallbearers were Robert A. Baggett, Sr., David Harvey, Ray Harvey, Jimmy Howard, Cline Tootle, Ronald Warren, Quinton Rush, Bud Rowdin, Larry Wilkes, Duwane Moore and Sam Collins.

Betty Tootle, 63

Betty Tootle, 63, passed away Sunday morning, January 27, 2008, at Orlando Regional Medical Center. The Tattnall County native had lived in Orlando the past forty years. She was retired from AT&T as an operator. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and Trinity United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Lillie Cox Tootle and two sisters, Janice Shuman and Sue Tootle.

She is survived by five brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy and Anh Tootle of Merritt Island, FL, Theo and Coty Tootle of Jasper, GA, Carroll and Shirley Tootle of Commerce, GA, Ray and Cindy Tootle of Metter and Mark and Suzanne Tootle of Pooler; great aunt, Grace DeLoach of Glennville; aunt, Mary Tootle of Reidsville; and special cousin, Sharon Bland of Savannah.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at Reidsville United Methodist Church with Reverend David Hudson, Reverend Marc Foster and Mr. Ronnie McCall officiating. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Craig Tootle, Glenn Tootle, Brian Tootle, Mike Tootle, Clay Tootle and Garrett Shuman. Honorary pallbearers were members of the graduating class of 1962.

Hugh M. McCall, 91

Hugh M. McCall, 91, of Tampa, passed away, Friday, January 18, 2008. The son of Stephen Marcus McCall and Holland Way McCall, Hugh was born in Reidsville, GA, served in WWII as Air Force Photo-Intelligence officer and enjoyed a 44-year career at the Ferman Motor Car Co. He was a loving husband and father who put his family above all else.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 yrs., Esther Jessica McCall; his brother, Larry W. (Alice) McCall, of Odessa; his sister, Etta Lewis, of Tampa; his daughters, Donna Lee (Duane) Davis, of Ramsey, MN, and Janis (John) Ricci, of Clearwater; his son, S. Mark McCall, of Tampa; his grandchildren, Alissa (David) Arnaud, Erin J. McCall and Lon J. McCall (all of Tampa) and Zachary S. Davis of St. Cloud, MN; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held at Marsicano Funeral Home from 5:30-7 pm, Tuesday, January 29.

Tommie L. Parker, 95

Tommie L. Parker, 95, passed away Monday, January 21, 2008, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of his life. He was employed in the timber and turpentine industry. He and his wife operated Beard’s Bluff Adamson’s Fish Camp for many years. He was a member of Pigott Branch Baptist Church and is preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Lee Parker.

He is survived by a sister, Alma Haggerty of Hinesville; nieces and nephews, Frank and Jackie Parker, Judy and Joe Anderson, Sheila and Layton Fraser, Linda and Dave Bjork, Mike Haggerty, Deloris Kingsley, Ernestine and Ellis Todd, David and Nell Allred, Ann Stephens, Dorothy Hook and Scott and Cathy Hook.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. at Pigott Branch Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend James O. Young officiating.

Ruth Futch Porter, 83

Ruth Futch Porter, 83, died Thursday, January 17, 2008, at Ogeechee Hospice. She was born in Liberty County on May 5, 1924. She lived most of her life in Tattnall County. She owned and operated Ruth’s Beauty Salon for many years. She was a homemaker and a member of St. James AME Church, where she served as a Trustee, Sunday school teacher and Class Leader, but the choir was her passion. She was chief musician at St. James and a great song leader. She also played piano for a number of churches in surrounding Counties, including Greater Zachariah, Macedonia of Ludowici, and Bethel AMEC of Collins to name a few. She initiated monthly musical programs at St. James, which featured many groups and individual singers. She worked tirelessly for her Church and community. She could always be relied upon to go when no one else would. She was affectionately referred to as “old faithful” by her Christian friends over a large part of Southeast Georgia. The Waycross District of the AME Church honored her on September 15, 2007, for faithful service. She was also a member of Laurel Grove chapter #118 OES.

She is survived by three daughters, Versaline Williams of Chicago, IL, Classine Porter of Glennville and Colleen Clowers of Perry; one son, Narcellus Porter of Claxton; one stepdaughter, Dorothy Porter of Queens, NY; one daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Porter and one son-in-law, Bishop Ernest Clowers; forty-four grandchildren; forty-one great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

A special wake/memorial/musical program will be held on Friday, January 25, 2008, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at St. James AMEC. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 26, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at St. James AME. Burial will be in Glennville City Cemetery.

Bobby Smiley, 62

Bobby Smiley, 62, entered into rest, Saturday, January 19, 2008, at his daughter’s home in Stanfield, NC. He was born in Tattnall County, GA on May 24, 1945, to the late James Willie Smiley and Beulah Beatrice DeLoach Smiley. He worked as a Land Management Supervisor, and was a member of Botsford Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Onnie Anderson Smiley, of Waynesboro, GA; son, Joey James Smiley, of Aiken, SC; two daughters, Julie Smiley Barron, of Stanfield, NC, and Donna Smiley Fountain, of Middleburg, FL; two brothers, Glenn Smiley, of Savannah, and Billy Smiley, of Glennville, GA; sister, Joyce Ann Fennel, also of Glennville, GA.; five grandchildren, Zoe Jan Barron, Brandon Lee Smiley, Morgan Fountain, MaeKenzie Fountain, and Madison Fountain.

Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2008, at Botsford Baptist Church, with Rev. Wayne Dixon and Rev. Mike Holland officiating. Interment followed at the Botsford Baptist Church Cemetery.

Eloise D. Stubbs, 76, passed away Thursday, January 17, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. She had lived in Glennville most of her life and was retired from Central Pharmacy after 30 years of service. She was a member of the Glennville Free Will Baptist Church and attended Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Swinton F. Stubbs of Glennville; children, Sherill Brannen, Pam and Gary Gantt and Sandy Stubbs, all of Glennville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Julia and Jim Tootle of Glennville and Carolyn and Rex Parr of Opp, AL; sister-in-law, Marcelle Foresman of Glennville; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 20, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home with Elder David Summerford and Elder W.H. Durrence officiating. Burial followed in Loves Chapel Church Cemetery.

Dan Collins, Jr., 91

Mr. Dan Collins, Jr., 91, son of the late Mr. Dan Collins and the late Mrs. Maybell Moses, of Collins, was born on January 16, 1916, in Tattnall County, GA. On January 11, 2008, he departed this life at Tattnall Community Hospital. He was employed by Curry Company for over 50 years. In the year of 1941, he was united in holy matrimony to the late Mrs. Mittie Brown Collins. To this union five children were born. One daughter, Brenda Carswell, and two adopted sons, Cecil and Clarence Mosley, preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn, three daughters, Elaine (Winton) Bacon of Claxton, GA, Margaret Lowe of Upper Marlboro, MD, and Donna Ransom of Oxon Hill, MD; one son, Paul (Tonya) Collins, III, of Tattnall County; adopted children, Madelyn Walker and Burke Brown of Jacksonville, FL; ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Professional services were entrusted to Harper’s Funeral Home.




Irene Weaver Harrelson, 71

Mrs. Irene Weaver Harrelson, 71, passed away early Saturday morning, January 12, 2008, at her residence.

The Laurens County native had lived in Claxton many years moving to Collins five years ago. She was a homemaker and attended Full Gospel Tabernacle in Collins. She was preceded in death by her son, Billy Harrelson, and a daughter, Regina Harrelson.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, James Harrelson of Collins; two daughters, Dorothy Harrelson and Tonia Fletcher of Collins; three sons, Danny Weaver of Reidsville, Hugie Harrelson and Emory Bud Harrelson, both of Collins; a sister, Betsy Kelly of Richmond, KY; two brothers, Billy Rae Weaver of Collins and Huie Weaver of Claxton; seventeen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Howard Ward, Kenny DeLoach, Jerry Douglas, Jamie Swat, Ray Collins, and Kenny Gibson.

Mr. Vance Harris, 47, of Ball Ground, GA, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at North Fulton Regional Hospital. He was a contractor in the construction business and of Protestant faith.

Survivors include his loving partner, Agnes Walters, Ball Ground; sons, Jeremiah Harris and Hunter Harris, Ball Ground and Brian Wade, Mansfield, GA; daughters, Danielle Harris, Mansfield, GA, and Hope Harris, Ball Ground; mother, Carolyn Harris, Canton; father and stepmother, R. Don and Patsy Harris, Ellijay; brother, Ricky Harris, Augusta; sister, Lana Shuman, Reidsville.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, January 12, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of South Canton Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Gayton officiating.

Ivory D. Parker, 81

Brother Ivory D. Parker, 81, was born on April 8, 1926, in Ludowici, GA, to the late Mr. Willie and Hattie Parker.

Brother Ivory was a faithful worker until his illness would not allow him to work any longer. He was also a faithful member of Zion Temple and if he could help you he did especially when it came to giving you a ride where you needed to go.

Brother Ivory D. Parker departed this life on January 9, 2008. He was preceded in death by his son, Ivory D. Parker, Jr., eight brothers and two sisters.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Mary Parker of Jesup, GA; seven daughters, Betty Mae Lanier of Jesup, GA, Barbara Woods of Midway, GA, Thresa Parker of Buffalo, NY, Cynthia M. Tyron (L. Johnson) of Waldorsd , MD, Ivory Lee Bentley (Tony) of Texas, Crystal Renee Mason of Lyons, GA, and Darlene Lynette Outler (Michael) of Lyons, GA; one step-daughter, Gertrude James of Glennville, GA; one sister-in-law, Wornie E. Cummings of Glennville, GA; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at Zion Temple Church of Christ in Glennville, GA, with Elder Robert Cooper presiding and Elder Abel Huston officiating. Pallbearers were nephews of Mr. Parker.

Lilly Ruth Parker, 73, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2008, at Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Center in Statesboro. The Long County native had lived in Glennville for many years and in the Statesboro area for the past several years. She was a homemaker and a member of Ludowici First Baptist Church and a former member of Glennville First Christian Church. She is preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ethelwynn “Pet” Howard.

She is survived by her children, Wyndy Kicklighter Mitcham of Rogersville, MO, Brian Kicklighter of Pooler, Valerie Kicklighter Ellington of Soperton; sisters, Mary Lou Parker Hodges of Colonial Heights, VA, and Lenore Parker Sharp of Ludowici; brothers, H.G. Smith of Kingston, TN, Jerry E. Parker of Screven and Thomas H. Parker, Jr., of Garden City; grandchildren, Ansley and Andrew Kicklighter and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 17, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at Ludowici First Baptist Church with Reverend Eric Rentz, Reverend Price Chapman and Reverend George Grimes officiating. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Jones Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Edward G. Pinder, 85, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2008, at Coastal Manor Nursing Home. The Dade County, Florida, native had lived in Miami, Florida, for many years moving to Glennville several years ago. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from Belcher Oil Company in Miami. He was a member of First United Pentecostal Church in Glennville. He is preceded in death by his wife, Trudy Rolls Pinder, and daughter, Barbara Rowe.

He is survived by a sister, Beatrice Tipton of Cocoa, FL; brothers, Rubin Daniel Pinder of Lauderhill, FL, and Samuel Pinder of Lake City, GA; three grandchildren, Tina Rushing, Reggie Rowe, and William Rowe; five great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 13, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at First United Pentecostal Church with Reverend James M. Holland and Reverend Randy Watts officiating. Burial followed in Ebenezer Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cynthia (Cindy) Burkhalter Block, 56, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at her residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. She was born in Toombs County and had lived in Glennville all of her life. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and a homemaker. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her father, Herbert J. Burkhalter.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Charles Block of Glennville; daughter and son-in-law, Jamie and J.K. Crews of Reidsville; mother, Johnnie Burkhalter of Glennville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeannette and Eddie Taylor of Macon, Paulette Groover, Debbie and Robert Dasher and Rhonda and Royce Kennedy, all of Glennville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bubba and Holly Burkhalter of Glennville, Charles and Wynette Burkhalter of Claxton, Terry and Earlene Burkhalter, Randy and Lisa Burkhalter, Ricky Burkhalter, all of Glennville; several aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

James J. Canady, 78

Mr. James J. Canady, 78, passed away Sunday evening, January 6, 2008, at Tattnall Community Hospital. The Montgomery County native had lived in Reidsville most of his life. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in the Korean Conflict and retired as a Chief Radio Operator from the Georgia State Patrol. He was a member of the Reidsville Baptist Church.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James Michael and Kelly Canady of Hagan and Donald Wayne and Tammy Canady of Baxley; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa C. and Darrion Stanfield of Reidsville; eight grandchildren, one great-grandson and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2008, from the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Reverend Steve Kimbrell officiating. Entombment followed in Reidsville City Cemetery with full honors.

Alphonso Cooper, 94

Alphonso Cooper, 94, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, January 2, 2008, after an extended illness. He was born July 15, 1914, to the late Maggie Beatrice “Zeebee” Walker and Martin Cooper. He was reared and educated in Long County. He moved to Rochester, NY, during his youthful years. After some thirty plus years, he retired and returned home in 1991 and reactivated his membership at St. James AME Church.

He was united in holy matrimony to Annie Mae Grant who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Nora Cooper, Magnolia Hopkins, Earlene Nunnally and one brother, Herman Cooper.

He leaves to cherish his memory, three daughters, Bessie Stafford, of Miami, FL, Clara McArthur of Glennville, GA, and Sonya Benefield of Folkston, GA, fourteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great grandchildren, seventeen great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild and a host of other relatives and friends including Pearls of Life Hospice and two special caregivers, Louvinia DeLoach and Beth Ray.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at St. James AME Church in Glennville, GA, with Reverend Sharlene Hendley officiating. Burial followed at Roberts Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers were Derrick King, John King, Gralyn Knox and Victor Porter. Honorary pallbearers were the Stewards and Trustees of St. James.

Eula Powell Edwards, 76

Mrs. Eula Powell Edwards, 76, of Lyons died Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at Toombs Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native lived most of her life in Lyons. She was a homemaker and loved taking care of children and her family. Eula was a very strong and determined lady with a wonderful green thumb. She was the widow of B.Q. Edwards.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Anita Edwards of Lyons; three sisters, Joyce Edge, Carolyn Dyer and Tera Collins, all of Lyons; two brothers, Leonard Powell, Jr., and Marvin Powell, both of Lyons; five grandchildren, Tristen, Kelsey, Amber, Matthew and Jada.

Memorial services were held Friday, January 4, at 11:00 a.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel. Cremain burial followed at Mt. Moriah in Toombs County.

Darvin Hudson, 53

Darvin Hudson, 53, passed away, Wednesday, December 26, 2007. He was the son of the late Charles Hudson and Stella M. Braddy of Glennville.

Darvin attended public school in Glennville, GA, Tattnall County. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country and received an Honorable Discharge.

Darvin recommitted his life to God in January of 2006. He knew that it was time to serve the Lord with all of his heart. Darvin attended Greater Zachariah Baptist Church.

On November 9, 2006, Darvin married his long time love, Marilyn Monroe. It was at this time he shared a life commitment with his dear Marilyn.

Darvin leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Marilyn; three sons, Darvin Hudson Jr. (Shana), Derek Nesbitt, Kenny Nesbitt of Glennville; one daughter, Kim Aguilar (David) of Glennville; four brothers, Dennis, Lonzo (Ingrid), Eddie and Theron of Miami, FL; three sisters, Sandra of Glennville, GA, Carleen and Renitha V. (Costello) of Miami, FL; six grandchildren, Nigeria (Shana), Josh, Samuel (Monica), Shartisha (Vanessa), Brandon, Christin (Kim) of Glennville; four sisters-in-law, Babra, Beatrice of Reidsville, GA, Jerreathe (Billy), Thelma of N.Y. City; two brothers-in-law, Norman of Glennville, GA, and Marcus of N.Y. City and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 31, 2007, at 11:00 a.m., at Greater Zachariah Baptist Church in Glennville, with Reverend C.L. Anderson, officiating. Interment followed in the Georgia Veterans Cemetery in Glennville.

William E. Kersey “Billy” 44, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2007. He was born in Savannah, GA, and grew up in Port Wentworth, GA.

He was preceded in death by his father, Otis Kersey of Port Wentworth, GA, and his maternal grandmother, Lottie Powell of Collins, GA.

He is survived by his mother, Willodean Kersey of Collins, GA; two daughters, Chassity Clements of Vidalia, GA and Emily Kersey of Urbana, IL; one son, Evan Kersey of Urbana, IL; one grandson, Kodie Clements of Vidalia, GA; three brothers, Ronnie (Renee) Rich of Havana, FL, Paul (Julia) Kersey and Alan (Jeane) Kersey both of Rincon, GA; two sisters, Sylvia (Edward) Cannon of Nichols, GA, and Thena (Scott) Redding of Brooklet, GA; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Haven Leaston Kicklighter, Sr., 89, went to be with our Lord on Monday, January 7, 2008. Haven was born December 25, 1918, in Glennville, GA, the son of Leaston and Narcy Kicklighter. He was known to his friends as “Haven”, endearingly to his children as “Daddy” and his grandchildren as “PawPaw”. He retired from Fort Stewart in the position of Service Inspector in the Motor Pool. He has been called “a man of character” whose smile warmed the heart of others. He loved fishing in his pond, riding his tractor and working in his vegetable garden, which he shared with others.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Marjorie Hooten Kicklighter.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Haven and Sandy Kicklighter of Marietta, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Mike Blacker of Livingston, TX; brother, Harris Kicklighter of Glennville, GA; grandchildren, Trey and Susan Kicklighter, Ty and Emily Kicklighter, Taz and Christie Kicklighter and Carl and Allison Swanson; great-grandchildren, Clair, Leaston, Sally, Sidney and Bode; and a host of men, women, and children whose lives he touched and who are richer for having known him.

Elzada Rogers Medders, 90, died Sunday, January 6, 2008, at her residence, under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice and with special caregivers, Carol, Marie, Mary Dorisene and Linda.

She was born in Screven County and lived in Claxton, Pembroke and Glennville, GA. She was a loving mother. She was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Glennville.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, C.C. (Doc) Rogers of Claxton and Dewy Medders of Pembroke and her son, H. Allen Rogers of Tampa, FL.

Survivors were one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Robert Baggett of Glennville; one son and daughter-in-law, Henry and June Rogers of Tampa, FL; a daughter-in-law, Margie Rogers of Tampa, FL; two sisters, Ollie Eve Deleporte of MI., and Eula Mae Hayes of FL; six grandchildren, several great and great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 8, at 11:00 a.m. at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Michael Morgan officiating. Burial followed at Brewton Cemetery, Hagan, GA.

Richard “Ricky” Ray, 41, passed away Friday, January 4, 2008, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Bibb County native had lived in Glennville most of his life. He was a carpenter in the construction industry and attended Little Rock Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy Ray of Glennville; children, Katrina and Larry Hill of Claxton and Danny and Darla Love of Glennville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry, Jr. and Jean Ray of Bloomingdale, Billy and Debra Ray of Claxton, Melvin Ray and Leslie Mizell both of Glennville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lanine and Coy Rowe of Pembroke, Mary and John Andrulewicz of Midway, Janette and Mike Miemiec of Richmond Hill and Laurie Odom of Pooler; grandchildren, Hannah and Noah Hill and Kensly Love; several nieces and nephews.

Olevia Ringwood, 87, died Sunday, December 30, 2007, at Fairview Hospital in Dublin, Georgia. She was born in December 1921 in

Greelyville, South Carolina, to Sallie and Horace Wright. She lived in Glennville and New Haven, Connecticut, and made Dublin her home for many years. She was a member of First African Baptist Church in Glennville for a number of years.

She is survived by her children: Naomi Kelly, William H. Ringwood, Samuel Ringwood, Sallie Mae Thomas, Nehemiah Ronnie Ringwood, Terry (Flora) Phillistean Obi, and Barbara Louise (Jeffery) O’Land; four brothers: Horace (Pat) Wright, Glenn Wright, Laverne Wright, Sr., and Ernest Wright; three sisters: Susie Williams,

Margaret Wright, and Novella (Ruben) King; and sisters-in-law, Beatrice Wright and Alma Wright.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 5, at 11 a.m. at Springhill Missionary Baptist Church in Dublin. Burial was in Dudley Memorial Cemetery in Dublin.

Archie LaVerne Wear, Jr., 66, born January 1, 1942, died in Savannah, GA, under Hospice care on December 27, 2007, of congestive heart failure.

He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Dancy and David Carmichael of Ludowici, GA, Jennifer and Nelson Ferry of Lebanon, IL, and Pamela and William Herbert of Hinesville, GA; a brother, Samuel LeRoy Wear of Corpus Christi, TX; a half sister and various other relatives and friends.

She was a 1968 graduate of Glennville High School and attended South Georgia College. She was a homemaker and a member of the Glennville United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Stacy Bradley.

She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Danny Anderson of Glennville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Wendy Anderson, Alan and Angie Anderson, all of Glennville; and Bradley B. Anderson, of Reidsville; her father, Richard Bradley of Glennville; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Louise Bradley, Jr. of Glennville; four grandchildren, Trey, Zachary, Brooke and AJ Anderson, all of Glennville; several nieces and nephews.

Rita Knight Baxter, 83, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2007, at her residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville most of her life. She was retired from AAFES at Ft. Stewart and was a homemaker. She was a member of Glennville Free Will Baptist Church where she served as Saxton for 19 years. She is preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Baxter.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David and Holly Baxter of Glennville; three grandchildren, Kris Baxter of Augusta, Kaitlyn and Joe Baxter of Glennville; three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 29, 2007, at Glennville Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Stephen Windham and Rev. Bruce Roberts officiating. Burial followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.

Mr. Wright Blocker, 87, died Saturday, December 22, 2007, under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice, after an extended illness. He was a farmer and lifelong resident of Tattnall County. He loved people and never met a stranger. He was a very caring person who helped others in need. His gift of “Gab” led him into many conversations with people everywhere. He loved to “TALK”. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Ray Blocker and two granddaughters, Tori and Tara Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Kirkland Blocker of Glennville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Terrel Blocker and Gerald and Tammy Blocker of Glennville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Chip Roberson of Austin, TX, and Mabel and Carson Mixon of Nahunta, GA; two sisters, Jackie McGrady of Brooklet and Theresa Smith of Claxton; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

Jimmy Lermont Devine was born August 8, 1981, in Metter, Georgia, to Jimmy and Annie Devine. He was educated in the public schools of Portal, Georgia. At an early age, he became a member of Rehoviah Baptist Church, Portal, Georgia. He was called home on Thursday, December 20, 2007. He was truly a “humble” young man who loved fishing, mechanics, and his family.

Vivian Lynn Lewis, 67, of Baxley died Friday, December 21, 2007, at The Hospice House of Savannah after an extended illness.

Mrs. Lewis was born April 24, 1940, in Collins to the late Roy L. Lynn and Nina Glisson Lynn. She had resided in Appling County for the past 50 years and was a seamstress with Baxley Garment and a manager at Captain D’s. She was a member of Oak View Baptist Church and a contributor to the Faithful Friends Ministry of Altamaha Baptist Church. She was mother and father to her five children for the past 28 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald O. Lewis; grandson, Jonathan Watts; brother, Reginald Lynn; and sister, Barbara L. Seese.

She is survived by daughters, Lyn L. Watts of Baxley and Charmagne L. Landrum of Harlem; sons, Donnie O. Lewis and Chris D. Lewis both of Baxley and Ronnie K. Lewis of Surrency; sister, Sandra L. Moreland of Fredrick, MD; brothers, Kyle Lynn and Herbert Lynn both of Powder Springs, Donald Lynn of Tubec, Arizona, Wendell Lynn of Winston and Delbert Lynn of Pt. St. Lucie, FL; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Michael L. Rush, 52, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007, at St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah.

The Chatham County native lived in Glennville for several years prior to moving to Evans County. He graduated from Glennville High School and worked at Claxton Oil Company for the past nine years. He was an avid outdoorsman and NASCAR fan.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Marie Rush.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Jody Rush of Metter and John and Jerri Rush of Glennville; one daughter, Kendra Rush of Metter; two brothers, Raleigh Rush of South Carolina and David Rush of Savannah; four sisters, Sherry Hampton and Elaine Rush of Claxton, Kitty Ricks of Savannah and Molly Torrance of Savannah; five grandchildren, Dalton Rush, C.J. Padgett, Bethany Rush, Johnathan Rush and Macy Rush.

Mr. Robert Stinson, 59, passed away Saturday afternoon, December 22, 2007, at his residence under Hospice Care. The Telfair County native had lived in Dublin many years moving to Collins in 1978. He was a US Army veteran and in the Construction business. He was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Daniels.

He is survived by his wife, Becky Hutcheson Stinson of Collins; a daughter and son-in-law, Hannah and Erik Hampton of Collins; a son, Bryan Stinson of Collins; his parents, Robert Emory and Billie Ruth Stinson of Dublin; a sister, Gail Passmore of Dublin; five brothers, Billy, Raymond, Donnie, Franklin and Jimmy Stinson, all of Dublin; three grandchildren, Blu and River Cowart and John David Rushing III; numerous nieces and nephews.

Shirley Zeek, 79, passed away Thursday, December 20, 2007, at Candler Hospital in Savannah. The Pennsylvania native had lived in Michigan for many years moving to Glennville in 1992. She was retired from the Wayne County, Michigan Court System as a court recorder and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, William Zeek of Glennville; sisters, Martha Allen and Virginia Allen, both of Ft. Myers, FL; brothers, Lloyd Allen and Barnes Allen, both of Clairton, PA; sister-in-law, Jenny Morris of Glennville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sunday, December 23 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home. Burial followed in Glennville Memorial Gardens.
