Loree Collins Dickey, 81

Loree Collins Dickey, 81, died Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at Community Hospice in Vidalia. She was born in Tattnall County and lived there most of her life. She was a clerk at Wilkes Drug Store for many years. Loree was a member of the Cobbtown Baptist Church, the Fidelis Sunday school Class and served as chairwoman of the Benevolent Committee. She was a member of the Central Homemakers Club and Disabled Americans Veterans Auxiliary. Loree was known for her delicious pound cakes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruby Hendricks Collins and Foy Collins.

She is survived by her husband, Tommy Gene Dickey of Cobbtown; stepbrothers and sisters, Vaughn (Faye) Lanier of Cobbtown, Dr. Willis (Tish) Lanier of Atlanta; Glenda (Jimmy) Sanders of Metter and Margaret (Van) Pease of Alpharetta; and a wonderful family of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Reverend K.C. Seabury officiating. Burial followed in the Sunlight Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Will Lanier, John Sanders, Hudak Hendrix, Doy Hendrix, Larry Hendricks and Wayne Hendricks.

Donna Sanders, 57

Donna Sanders, 57, died Sunday February 24, 2008, at Ogeechee Area Hospice after an extended illness. The native of Candler County was a member of El Bethel Baptist Church. She loved books, shopping, going out to eat, and watching animal and comedy shows on television vision. Donna enjoyed dressing up and putting on jewelry and looking pretty. She had several pets, but her favorites were her boxer Bozo and her cat Dudleena. She attended High Hope and loved helping others at the school. Donna was known for her sense of humor, loved to travel, especially on the interstate, and was always the one who took care of the snacks on these trips.

She was predeceased by her parents, R. Lee Sr. and Thetis Randall Sanders; her brother, Hubert Sanders; her brother-in-law, Lorin Pierce; and two nephews, Eddie Pierce and Dan Sanders.

Survivors: brothers and sisters-in-law, R .L. Jr. and Eva Sanders of Morristown, TN, William and Jean Sanders of White Pine, TN, Jimmy and Glenda Sanders of Metter, JoAnn Sanders of Cobbtown; sisters and brothers-in-law Evelyn and Harold Eady of Macon, Edna Pierce of Millen, Mary and J.C. Gay of Garfield, Dot and Don Rabitsch of Metter, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 26, 2008, and burial followed in the El Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.

Patrick H. (Pat) Burkhalter, 60

Mr. Patrick H. (Pat) Burkhalter, 60, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2008, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on February 5, 2008. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of his life. He was a graduate of Glennville High School, Armstrong State University and a Director of First Citizens Bank. He was Owner /Operator of Burkhalter’s Galaxy in Glennville and was an avid fisherman. He attended Cornerstone Bible Church and was preceded in death by his parents, Cyril (Sid) and Etwinda Burkhalter and a brother, Pledger Burkhalter.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Cowart Burkhalter of Glennville; children, Christy Hertz of Richmond, VA, Heidi Deal of Glennville, Patrick H. Burkhalter Jr. of Atlanta, GA, Heather Burkhalter, Brad Burkhalter, Ben Burkhalter, all of Glennville, Brett Burkhalter, a very special son of Glennville, and Melissa Lanier of Savannah; sister, Shelma Kitchens of Glennville; four grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at Glennville First Baptist Church with Reverend Jim Sutton and Reverend Joe Eason officiating. Burial followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.

Helen Maxine Claxton, 75

Mrs. Helen Maxine Claxton, age 75, of Lyons, GA, died Sunday, February 17, 2008, at Meadows Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Ms. Claxton is survived by one son Kenneth Claxton of Reidsville; two daughters, Elaine Conner and Debbie Fowler of Reidsville; and six grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Ms. Claxton were held Wednesday, February 20, 2008, from Jones-Stewart Funeral Home Lyons Chapel, with Reverend Bobby Toole and Reverend Henry Dowd officiating. Internment followed in Sharpe’s Cemetery.

Gregory Paul Jarriel, 46

Gregory Paul Jarriel, 46, died Monday, February 18, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Savannah. He was born in Tattnall County and was a lifelong resident. He was a poultry farmer, an agricultural farmer, truck driver and mechanic. He had worked 10 years as a foreman for Pike Contractors and at Georgia State Prison.

Greg was a wonderful son, husband and father and loved helping anyone who needed him. He was an avid sportsman and attended the Collins First Baptist Church. Greg was preceded in death by his father, Jerome Jarriel and a brother, Jerry Jarriel.

He is survived by his wife, Carla Russo; his mother, Meletta J. Boyette; son, Justin Jarriel; daughter, Lea Mackenzie Jarriel; two step-children, Tom Merritt Jr. and Ashley Marie Russo all of Collins; half-brother, William

Jarriel of Glennville; many dear friends and hunting buddies, including lifelong friend, Robbie Pye.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 20, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Reverend Steve Kimbrell officiating. Burial followed in the Cedar Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Blake White, John Jarriel, Bryan Jarriel, Louie Jarriel, Brian Howell and Terry Skinner. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy McDaniel, Franklin Mack, Robbie Pye, Charles Anderson and Pete Jarriel.

Albert Rooks, 83

Mr. Albert Rooks, 83, passed away Tuesday evening, February 12, 2008, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Toombs County native had lived in Savannah for 42 years, prior to moving to Reidsville in 1987. He was retired from Union Camp after 39 years of service and was a member of the Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Becky Rooks of Reidsville; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Thomas West of Reidsville; three sisters, Helen Taylor, Louie Rogers and Betty Thomas, all of Reidsville; grandson, Mykel S. Davis of Guyton; three great granddaughters, Alexis, Brooke and Cayla Davis; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 15, 2008, from the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Reverend David Moxley and Brother Wayne Fennell officiating. Interment followed in the Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ronnie Rogers, Roy Spikes Jr., J.E. Spikes, Larry Patton, Ricky Andrews and Charles Rooks.

Gaynell Sikes Smoak, 65

Mrs. Gaynell Sikes Smoak, 65, died Saturday morning, February 9, 2008, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah following an extended illness.

She was a native of Cobbtown and had resided in Waycross since 1968. She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell Sikes and Sara Moore Sikes.

She was retired comptroller for Smoaks Heating and Air and Monroe Realty. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Red Hat Society. Mrs. Smoak was a master gardener and an accomplished seamstress. She was devoted to her family and loved being a GranGay.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Steve C. Smoak of Waycross; a daughter, Millecent Smoak Nelms of Waycross; a son, Steven R. (Rusty) Smoak (wife Patricia P.) of Atlanta; five grandchildren, Fitz, Lindsay, and Ella Smoak, Ben and Neve Nelms; a sister, Jo Ann Sanders of Cobbtown; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 11, 2008, at First Baptist Church. A graveside service was held at 3:00 p.m. Monday at Connors Baptist Church Cemetery in Cobbtown.

Royce Byron Anderson, 64

Royce Byron Anderson, 64, died Tuesday, February 5, 2008, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born in Savannah and was a graduate of Jenkins High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a former employee of Trust Company Bank in Atlanta. In 1976, he returned to permanently reside in Glennville. He was the owner of Tattnall Insurance and Realty, Inc. and a member of the Board of Directors of South Georgia Bank since its inception in 1987. He was a faithful member of Ebenezer Free Will Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Purvis Anderson.

He is survived by his children, Alexis Anderson, Renee and Keith Dixon, all of Glennville and Lt. Col. Ron and Julie Anderson of Goldsboro, NC; fiancée, Margie Davis of Leeds, AL; sisters and brothers-in-law, Francine and David Scott of Conway, SC and Hilga and Walter Kerr of Moody, AL; mother-in-law, Mrs. Irma Purvis of Glennville; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Patsy Purcell and Linda and Randy Bradley, all of Glennville; grandchildren, Lindsay, Hunter, Avery, Zachary and Logan.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 9, 2008, at Ebenezer Free Will Baptist Church with Dr. Rick Cason officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors.

Waldo F. Blocker, 89, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2008, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of his life. He was a World War II Navy veteran and was retired from Civil Service at Ft. Stewart. He was a member of the VFW Post #8379 and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He loved farming and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Louise Waters Blocker of Glennville; sons and daughters-in-law, Everette F. and Peggie Blocker of Westlake, LA, Neal L. and Patricia Blocker of Lyons, and Loy S. and Bonnie Blocker of Glennville; daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and George Leubner of Westlake, LA, Cay and Eddy Holliday of Glennville, Donna Blocker Frey of Lake Charles, LA; sister, Rubye Waters of Winter Park, FL; brothers, Dwight Blocker of McDonough, Henry C. Blocker Jr. of Columbia, SC and Kenneth Blocker of Glennville; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

John Ander Foskey, 61

John Ander Foskey, 61, died Thursday, February 7, 2008, at his home.

The Wheeler County, Shiloh City, Georgia, native had resided in Evans County for most of his life. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church. He was an avid antique dealer.

Ander was preceded in death by his parents, Viene and Eulie Foskey.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle Barrow Foskey of Claxton; two sons and daughter-in-law, Abe and Foskey of Claxton, and Dwayne Randle of Temple, GA; one daughter, Chona Dyess of Claxton; three brothers, Harold Foskey of Collins, Perry Hearn of Millen and Terry Hearn of Louisiana; two grandchildren, Nevan Dyess and Ayla Foskey; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Anne Odom Rogers, 77

Anne Odom Rogers, 77, passed away February 6, 2008, after a short illness.

The Tattnall County native was born November 11, 1930, and lived most of her life in Evans County. She was a member of Bull Creek Baptist Church and a homemaker. She attended Georgia Southern College and worked for a number of years at the Evans County Tax Commissioners Office and as a substitute teacher for Evans County Elementary School.

She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Grady and Cyril Odom and Cubie Odom Kicklighter.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Odell Rogers of Claxton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Joy and Tom Pinckard, and Janet Byrd, all of Claxton and Jill and Jim Pittman of Metter; one sister, Linda Cuellar of Springfield; grandchildren, Becky and Josh Havener of Griffithville, AR, Jordan and James Pittman of Metter, Casey and Deidre Pinckard of Claxton and Tuesday Byrd of Claxton; great-grandchildren, Hallie Havener of Griffithville, AR and Dawson Pinckard of Claxton; two sisters-in-law, Jean Odom and Christine Odom of Glennville; brothers and sister-in-law, Charles and Louise Fields of Claxton and Donald Rogers of San Francisco, CA; special caregiver and friend, Amy Jones of Claxton and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

George Cozad Starcher, 94

George Cozad Starcher, 94, passed away Monday, February 11, 2008, at his residence under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice. He was born in West Virginia and lived in Prattville, Alabama, before moving to Glennville ten years ago. George had lived a very interesting life, retiring from the Federal Government as a Soil Conservationist with 25 years of service. He worked with an orphanage in Talladega, AL; Pratlow Hospital in Tuscaloosa, AL; Georgia’s Experiment Station in Griffin and a shipyard in Mobile, AL. After retirement he tried his hand at dairy farming, professional photography, sign painting and newspaper writing, where he wrote a column for The Glennville Sentinel called “By George”.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Montez Swindell Starcher.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, George Alan and Carol Starcher of Birmingham, AL; daughter, Lillian Burtram Blake of Glennville; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2008, from the chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Vance Riggins officiating. Burial will follow in Ebenezer Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Paul Thornhill, Ronnie DeLoach, Willie DeLoach, Gerald Blocker, Justin Foster and Ron DeLoach.

John Arthur Stevens, 89

Mr. John Arthur Stevens, 89, was born to Willie and Rachel Williams on January 27, 1919, in Liberty County, Georgia. He passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville.

He lived most of his life in Hinesville and worked at Liberty ICE Company for 40 years. He was a member at First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church where he served faithfully on the Usher Board.

He is survived by nine nieces, Nettie Leigh Hewlett (William) of Boston, MA, Catherine Roberts (Leon) of Philadelphia, PA, Luvenia Green, Jacquelyn Green, both of Hinesville, GA, Earthaline Palmer of Delaware, Lottie M. Freeman of Hollywood, FL, Mary Bobbins of Savannah, GA, Juilette Jones of Atlanta, GA, Rachel Ash of Hinesville, GA; one godson, Gregory Wilson (Falicia) of Las Vegas, NV; a special friend and neighbor, Mr. Eddie Wilson of Hinesville, GA.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 9, 2008, at 2 p.m. at First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Hinesville with Rev. Sinclair L. Thorne officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Rafael Volpe, 73

Mr. Rafael Volpe, 73, passed away, Tuesday afternoon, February 5, 2008, at his residence under the care of Community Hospice.

The Puerto Rico native had lived in New York for many years, prior to moving to Reidsville 22 years ago. He was a Head Chef for the Rocking Horse Ranch in New York for 35 years and recently retired from Toombs Middle School. He was a member of the Lake View Full Gospel Praise and Worship Center in Reidsville.

He is survived by his children, Rafael Volpe Alvarado, Rosalina Volpe Alvarado, Nancy C. Volpe Alvarado, and John D. Volpe Alvarado; grandchildren, Jessica I. Mercado Volpe, Jesus A. Mercado Volpe, Kenia Robles, Danny Torres, Maritza Torres, and Yasmin Torres; great-grandchildren, Alexia Jadiel Negron Mercado; and a sister, Nora Peceo.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 9, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Lake View Full Gospel Praise and Worship Church with Pastors, E.V. Jenkins and Carlos Volpe officiating. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.

Carl James Willis, 51

Carl James Willis, 51, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at his home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Toombs County native had lived in Reidsville most of his life, prior to moving to Glennville one year ago. He was retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections after twenty-five years of service. He attended Abundant Faith Pentecostal Fellowship in Reidsville.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Willis of Glennville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Pat and Sarah Willis and Jordan Willis, all of Reidsville; two daughters and son-in-law, Crystal and Daniel Crummey of Glennville and Mandy Willis of Reidsville; his parents, James and Eileen Willis of Reidsville; a sister, Teresa Hutcheson of Reidsville; five grandchildren, Tristan, Isaac, Aidan and Andrew Willis of Reidsville and Lily Ann Crummey of Glennville; several aunts, uncles, nieces.

Pallbearers were Randal Murray, Joey Anderson, Dean Wright, Lang Dunham, Preston Arnold and Gary Curl. Honorary pallbearers were Georgia Department of Corrections Honor Guard.

Herbert Baker, 78, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008.

Mr. Baker was a native of Glennville, GA, having lived in Milledgeville for most of his life. He was the son of the late J.D. and Ruby Kicklighter Baker. Mr. Baker was a retired mechanic, a member of the Christian Church, and an avid Nascar fan. Mr. Baker was a former automotive mechanics instructor at the Youth Development Center and Vo Tech.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Miller Baker of Eatonton; daughters, Pat Darity of Dublin and Jo Davidson of Kerrville, TX; stepsons, Randy Barlow and wife Shannon, Michael Barlow, Samuel Barlow, Carl Barlow and wife Jessica, Richard Barlow and wife Christa, all of Milledgeville; sisters, Warnell Roberts of Swainsboro, Bonnie Akins of FL, Nancile O’Connor of Fernandina Beach, FL, Jackilou O’Neal of Hinesville, Anglyn Anderson of Reidsville; brother, Jerriel Baker of Glennville; 18 grandchildren; three great grandchildren.

Mr. Carlton Brown, 91

Mr. Carlton Brown, 91, died Thursday, January 31, 2008, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro. The Candler County native and lifelong resident began his schooling in the old Franklin School House and graduated from Pulaski High School in 1933. He was a retired agriculture and tree farmer. He was a member of Lake Primitive Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Mr. Brown was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Cobbtown Lions Club. He was an avid fisherman, coin collector and had great interest in soil and water conservation. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Yuba Bowen Brown; a grandson, Nathan Powell; and a sister, Henrietta Funderburk.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ruis Brown of Metter; a son, Bowen Brown of Metter; two daughters, Ann B. Rewis of St. Simons Island and Patricia B. Callaway of Jesup; five step-children, Georgia Teefy of Atlanta, Grady Barefield of Kennesaw, Gerald Barefield of Groveland, Gwen McBride of Anderson, SC, and Greg Barefield of Gardner, ME; seven grandchildren, Jan Powell, Karla Sasser, Celeste Collins, Jay Callaway, Lari Naquin, Regan Smith and Erin Glanton; and 11 great grandchildren.

Cora J. Cobb, 84

Cora J. Cobb, 84, passed away Sunday evening, February 3, 2008, at her residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Tattnall County native had lived in Collins all of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Full Gospel Tabernacle. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill Cobb; sisters, Sula Oliver, Vaska Lee Johnson, Bonnell Youmans, Oneida Oliver, Miner Sparks; brothers, George L. Johnson and Wendell Johnson.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-laws, Becky and Monty Smith of Collins, and Pam and Donald Phillips of Carrolton; a sister, Faye Screen of Collins; a brother, Elvin Johnson of Collins; two grandchildren and their wives, Mark and Christy Strickland of Statesboro, and Chris and Donna Bacon of Buchanan; four great-grandchildren, Shaye Strickland, Zac Bacon, Sophie Strickland and Kyle Bacon; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday, February 7, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Full Gospel Tabernacle with Rev. Andrew Nelms officiating. Interment will follow in the Little Flock Church Cemetery.

Benny Fort, 58

Benny Fort, 58, passed away Saturday, February 2, 2008, at his residence. The Tattnall County native had lived in Collins all of his life. He was a self-employed mechanic and was a member of Collins Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his son, Benny Brian Fort.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Gail Fort of Collins; a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Brad Gore of Reidsville; two sisters, Carolyn Harrington and Ruth Edwards both of Collins; two grandchildren, McKenzie Gore and Tristan Glover; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Jason Edwards, Greg Mulling, Venson Edwards, Rodney Mulling, Wendell Powell and David Harrington.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 4, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth Green officiating. Interment followed in the Little Flock Church Cemetery.

Mollie Ruth Anderson McCall, 75

Mrs. Mollie Ruth Anderson McCall, age 75, died Sunday, February 3, 2008, at the Evans Memorial Hospital. The Collins, Georgia, native was the daughter of the late Charlie and Verona Anderson. Mrs. McCall was a graduate of Collins High School, Warren A. Candler School of Nursing in Savannah, Georgia, and became a licensed funeral director in 1980. She married Frank McCall in 1958 and the two of them owned and operated several businesses in Tattnall County. Following her husband’s death in 1982, Mrs. McCall continued to operate their family business, McCall Funeral Home in Reidsville, for over 43 years until her retirement in 2001.

Mrs. McCall was a member of the Reidsville United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Lillian Eason Sunday School Class and had served on the Administrative Board. She was a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild and the Grand Rascalettes. Mrs. McCall was awarded “Outstanding Georgia Citizen” by Secretary of State Cathy Cox in 2002.

Surviving are a daughter and her fiancé, Francyne McCall and Frank Deloach of Reidsville; a son, Frank McCall of Atlanta; her “adopted son,” Tracy Joiner of Statesboro and his two children, Tyson and Tyler Joiner; a step son, Dean McCall and his wife “Boots” of Bartlesville, OK; a brother, Jeff Anderson of Manassas; four step grandchildren, Kay Garrett, Amy Hoffer, Jay McCall and Jacob Deloach and four step great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 6, at 11:00 a.m. at the Reidsville United Methodist Church with Rev. Marc Foster and Rev. David Hudson officiating.

Interment was in the Reidsville City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Stevie Smith, Greg Durrence, Mark Shuman, Bobby Harden, Roger Kennedy, Jr., and Lamar Smith.

Gene Shaeffer, 49

Gene Shaeffer, 49, passed away Friday afternoon, February 1, 2008, at Tattnall Community Hospital from an apparent heart attack.

The Pennsylvania native had lived in Pooler many years moving to Reidsville three and a half years ago. He was the owner of All Around Repairs and was an US Army Veteran. Gene was an avid fisherman and hunter and attended Antioch Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Shaeffer of Reidsville; his mother, Phyllis Shaeffer of Savannah; two daughters and son-in-law, Jamie and Timmy Monroe of Cobbtown and Kristen Cromer of Reidsville; a son, Dustin Cromer of Reidsville; a sister, Laurel Pontbriand of Savannah; three brothers and sisters-in-laws, Mike Shaeffer and his fiance’ Bessie Watson of Savannah, Paul and Shelley Shaeffer of Jacksonville, FL, and Daniel and Wendy Shaeffer of Savannah; two grandchildren, Abbi and Evan Monroe both of Cobbtown.

Pallbearers were Timmy Monroe, Dan Bennett, David Williams, Paul Shaeffer, Paul Shaeffer Jr., Jarrith Fischer, Todd Padgett, and Mike Shaeffer.

John Sikes, 54

John Sikes, 54, passed away late Saturday night, February 2, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall County native had lived in Cobbtown most of his life. He was a self-employed carpenter and was of Baptist Faith.

He is survived by his son, Trent Sikes of Glennville; parents, W.L. and Betty Sikes of Cobbtown; sister, Sara Sikes of Cobbtown; grandson, Patrick Sikes of Glennville; nephew, Robbie Sikes of Cobbtown.

Pallbearers were Robbie Sikes, Brad Martin, Brad Davis, Duncan Davis, Jerry Powell, and Patrick Ansell.

Graveside funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, with Rev. K.C. Seabury officiating in the Sunlight Cemetery in Cobbtown.

Robert Louis Sikes, 77

Robert Louis Sikes, 77, of Collins died Monday, February 4, 2008, at Community Hospice in Vidalia. The Tattnall County native, son of the late Stanley and Cleola Boyette Sikes, returned to his home place in 1990. Louis retired as a civil engineer at Ft. Stewart and loved becoming a farmer. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church at Claxton and was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Sikes and son-in-law, Dale Morris.

Survivors are the mother of his children, Mildred Anderson Sikes of Vidalia; son, Robert Sikes of Savannah; daughters, Linda (Dennis) Kowalski of Mabeleton, Angela (Bruce) Bass and Brenda Morris both of Vidalia; brother, William Taft (Edna) Sikes of Savannah; grandchildren, Lyndsay Bass, Patrick Kowalski and Courtney Morris; and nephew, Kerry Sikes.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, February 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with burial in the Collins Baptist Church Cemetery. Minister will be Rev. Don Moye.

Pallbearers are Joe Davis, Keith Mack, Phillip Collins, Kinyard Jarriel, Jack Boyette and Calvin Anderson.

Joe Dwight Tatum, 91

Joe Dwight Tatum, 91, died Monday, February 4, 2008, at Glenvue Nursing Home, after a long illness. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of his life working in the timber industry and farming. He was a member of Battle Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Jones Tatum; sister, Merle Durrence; brothers, Curtis Dewitt, John C. and Eugene “Tiny” Tatum.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Marjorie and Lemmon McCorkle of Claxton and Betty and Wayne Kennedy of Glennville; sister, Myrtice Sikes of Glennville; brother and sisters-in-law, Willie Joe and Joann Tatum of Glennville and Nell Parker Tatum of Glennville; grandchildren, Tammy Dasher, Reese McCorkle, Jan Burke, Tony Kennedy, Joey McCorkle, Tommy Kennedy, Terry McCorkle and Dana Kennedy; fifteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 7 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home with Elder W.H. Durrence officiating. Burial will follow in Battle Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Annie Ruth Tyler, 85

Annie Ruth Tyler, 85, passed away January 30, 2008, after a long illness. She was living at Crofton Convalescent Nursing Home in Maryland.

The Tattnall County native was a homemaker and was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Maryland and a former member of Cresthill Baptist Church in Savannah.

Survivors include two sons, Steve Tyler of Maryland and Earl Tyler of Virginia; three daughters, Brenda Jewell, Betty Sullivan and Deanna Klovensky, all of Maryland; one sister, Mary Evans of Florida; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren and two step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held February 9, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Reidsville, GA. Remembrances may be made to: Alzheimer’s Association, 1899 Central Avenue, Augusta, GA.

Judy Ann Patrick Westmoreland, 53

Mrs. Judy Ann Patrick Westmoreland, 53, of Twin City died Saturday, February 2, 2008, at the Jefferson County Hospital after a sudden illness. A native of Toombs County, Judy moved to Twin City in 2003. She was the owner and operator of Patrick’s Premier Pinestraw and attended the Lyons Freewill Baptist Church. Judy was preceded in death by her parents, D.L. Patrick and Polly Currie.

Judy is survived by two daughters, Tracy Ann Hamilton of Cobbtown, and Stacy and her husband, G.W. Williford of Lyons; five grandchildren, Dustin Williford, Madison Hamilton, Tucker Williford, Flint Nail and River Harbuck; four brothers, Larry Patrick of Jacksonville, FL, Michael Patrick of Swainsboro, Johnny Patrick of Lagrange and Denny Gregory; two sisters, Brenda Patrick of Gainesville, FL, and Michelle Gregory of Lakecity, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at 2:00 p.m., from the Lyons Freewill Baptist Church with the Reverend Rick Wilson officiating. Interment followed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Rafael Volpe, 73

Mr. Rafael Volpe, 73, passed away Tuesday afternoon, February 5, 2008, at his residence under the care of Community Hospice.

The Puerto Rico native had lived in New York many years moving to Reidsville twenty-two years ago. He was a Head Chef for the Rocking Horse Ranch in New York for thirty-five years and recently retired from Toombs County Middle School. He was of member of the Lake View Full Gospel Praise & Worship Center in Reidsville.
