Carolyn Kirkland Adkins, 59 Carolyn Kirkland Adkins, 59, passed away Wednesday, December 20, 2006, at her residence under the care of Hospice of the Golden Isles. She was born in Chatham County and lived in Glennville, Brunswick and Atlanta for many years. She retired in 2001 from the U.S. Postal Service and moved to Belvedere Island, Townsend, GA. She was a member of South Newport Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Jerry A. Adkins of Belvedere Island, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Evelyn Kemp of Atlanta, GA; stepson and daughter-in-law, Joel and Ginny Adkins of Vancouver, WA; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Marcy and Tom Thomas of Lindenhurst, IL; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 23, 2006, at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Gene Hughes officiating. Burial followed in Glennville Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Burke, Matt Haddock, Mark Haddock, Glenn Steigman, Steve Steigman and Terry Waters. Bonnie M. Cammack, 93 Bonnie M. Cammack, 93, passed away Monday, December 25, 2006, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville most of her life. She was a homemaker, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and advisor to all of her family. She was a member of Watermelon Creek Baptist Church and is preceded in death by her husband, Curtis W. Cammack, and a son, Quinton. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lennie Ruth and Joe Hart of Glennville; son and daughter-in-law, Earl and Jacquelyn Cammack of Glennville; daughter-in-law, Rachel (Winky) Cammack of Glennville; 11 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren; two special nieces, Lou Beth Stanfield and Gennell Bass; and other nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 27, 2006, at Watermelon Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Miller, Rev. Ernest Dyal and Rev. Van Power officiating. Wilda J. Davis, 61 Wilda J. Davis, 61, passed away Tuesday morning, December 26, 2006, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville most of her life. She worked many years as a secretary for Shuman Fertilizer, IPW, and was a clerk at the Christian Book Store in Vidalia. She was currently the secretary at Abundant Faith PH Church in Reidsville. She was also a member of the Collins Lions Club and the Abundant Faith PH Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Monroe Lindsay, and her husband, Bobby Davis. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Carla Davis of Langley, VA; mother, Gladys Lindsay of Reidsville; two grandchildren, Kayla and Tyler Davis of Langley, VA; sister-in-law, Joyce Williams of Charlotte, NC; brother-in-law, J.C. and Anita Davis of Tucker; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 28 in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Reidsville City Cemetery. Bradley B. James Allen Stanfield, 77 James Allen Stanfield, 77, died Wednesday, December 20, 2006, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native had practiced law in Atlanta for 50 years and was a graduate of the University of Georgia Law School. He was president of the senior class and president of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. He represented various banking and financial institutions in Atlanta and was instrumental in creating the commercial Code of Georgia, by which all business transactions in Georgia are regulated. He was a patient of the Scottish Rite Hospital in Decatur, having spent a portion of his young life as a resident from the age of three months until he was twelve. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcus and Lois Stanfield; and a brother, Lawrence. He is survived by two nephews and several cousins. Graveside funeral services were held Saturday, December 23, 2006, at Watermelon Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Danny Lynn and Murray Benefield officiating. Sylvester H. Taylor, 83 Mr. Sylvester H. Taylor, 83, died Monday, December 18, 2006. He was born in Dora, AL, to the late Sandy and Hannah Taylor on April 2, 1923. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Fort Myers, FL. He joined the military December 11, 1942, and was honorably discharged January 13, 1945. He served as First A-A Antiaircraft B-B Battalion and 986 Quarter Master. He moved to Fort Myers, FL, in 1957 where he met and married his loving wife of 49 years, Mrs. Alice M. Taylor. Two children preceded him in death, a son, Sylvester Taylor Jr., and a stepdaughter, Eva Mae Smith. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Mrs. Alice M. Taylor; one stepdaughter, Christine Bell; one grandson, Darell Bell; and special friends of the family, Mary and Annie Laura Berry. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 21, 2006. He was a lifelong resident of Reidsville and worked with Student Affairs at Ogeechee Technical College. He was a member of the St. Matthews Catholic Church in Statesboro and was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs. He is preceded in death by his mother, Stephanie Weeks Anderson, brother, Paul Anderson and his uncle, Bob Weeks. He is survived by his father and step-mother, Northern Sr. and Janice Anderson of Ludowici; a brother and sister-in-law Timothy and Jill Anderson of Ringgold, GA; three step-sisters, Dancy Carmichael of Ludowici, Pamela Herbert of Hinesville and Jennifer Ferry of Lebanon, IL; two aunts, Fronie Wood of Pt. Wentworth and Pearl Griner of Reidsville; one uncle, Steve Weeks of Vidalia; a close cousin Debbie and Eddie Cox of Guyton; and several additional aunts and cousins. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 15, 2006, at the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Eric Rentz and Mr. Ronnie McCall officiating. Ronald Hutto, 55 Ronald Hutto, 55, passed away late Thursday night, December 14, 2006, at the Tattnall Community Hospital. He lived many years at the Country Place Group Home in the Stoney Hill Community, moving to Reidsville six months ago. He is survived by the loving staff and residents of Tattnall Health Care and the Pineland Mental Health Staff. W.L. Lynn, 79 W.L. Lynn, 79, passed away Friday morning, December 15, 2006, at the Tattnall Community Hospital. The Tattnall County native had served in the United States Navy for four years and then the United States Air Force for 23 years. He was a veteran of World War II, Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. He retired after 23 years of service from the Georgia Department of Corrections as a transportation superintendent. He attended Abundant Faith Pentecostal Church and was a Past Master of Rising Sun Lodge #32. He was the first president of the Tattnall County Shrine Club and was preceded in death by a son, George Donald Lynn and grandson, Stephen Lynn. He is survived by his wife, Loretha Lynn of Reidsville; a son, David Clyde Lynn of Vidalia; step-daughter, Rita Oliver of Reidsville; three step-sons, Jimmy, Kenneth and Ricky Trull, all of Reidsville; twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Jerome Register, Brian Register, John Bratcher, John Hardee, Eddie Frost, Greg Kurzner, and Charles Greer. James Brantley “Jim” Sikes, 71 James Brantley “Jim” Sikes, 71, passed away Wednesday morning, December 13, 2006, at Community Hospice House in Vidalia. The Tattnall County native had lived in Collins most of his life. He retired from the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He also retired from Thomas & Betts as an electrician. He was a Mason and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Sikes of Collins; two daughters, Joy Phillips of Collins and Shelba Jean Sikes of Mesa, AZ; four sons, Kenny Sikes of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Jimmy Sikes of Mesa, AZ, Don and Sam Sikes, both of Collins; four sisters, Ruth Hodge of Augusta, Ruby Cubbedge of Savannah, Virginia Calloway of Lyons, and Faye Cardell of Metter; eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Lester Kelly Denson, 88 On August 21, 1918, in Evans County, Georgia, Lester Kelly Denson, the eighth child of Esau Denson and Minnie Denson, was born. The last son born to this union, he was a delight and joy to his family. He had five sisters, Ollie, Nellie, Ida Bell, Elnora, Thelma, and three brothers, Rema, Randall and Lonzy. Five siblings preceded him in death. Lester was educated in the Evans County Public Schools. He was raised and lived in Claxton, Georgia. There he met and married Clara Bell Porter in the early 1940s. She preceded him in death. Soon after, Lester decided to move to New Jersey. There he became the owner of a small sanitation company. He remained there for almost five years and then returned to Glennville, Georgia. In Glennville, Lester became a policeman and served the city for several years. He also worked as a school bus driver for Tattnall County Public Schools. He had a love for children and would often coach various sports. The children were very fond of him. He frequented many churches, but most times he attended Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Claxton, Georgia. Though Lester never joined, he enjoyed the fellowship there and receiving the word. Years passed and Lester met Willie Bell Bacon. She became his close friend and companion. She, her children and grandchildren became a family to him. They affectionately called him “Pee-Paw.” Willie Bell later passed away, also preceding Lester in death. After retiring from the Tattnall County Public Schools, he supplied with the community with fresh vegetables and fruits. Often times his customers were unable to pay him, but that did not stop him from making sure that they received what they needed. He was a kind natured person and had a generous spirit. When Lester’s health began to decline, he was brought to Miami in August, 2002 to be closer to his sisters where he could be cared for. On Monday, December 4, the Lord reached down and extended His mighty arm and told Lester to come and take his rest. Lester leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, Ollie Denson Washington and Nellie Denson Johnson; one brother, Rema Denson; a host of nieces, nephews and other family members and friends. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. L. Perry McNeal officiating at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Groveland, Georgia. Mary Gordy, 96 Mrs. Mary Gordy, 96, passed away early Friday morning at her residence under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice. The Laurens County native had lived in Johnson Corner and Jesup many years moving to Reidsville in 1978. She was retired from the Wayne County Board of Education. Mrs. Gordy was the oldest member of the Reidsville Baptist Church, a member of the Sunshine Group and the Hattie Roundtree Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ward T. Gordy; son, Eugene Gordy; daughter, Christine Brown; and a granddaughter, Donnah Sue Gordy. She is survived by her son, Weldon Gordy of Reidsville; son-in-law, Perry Brown of Reidsville; three grandsons, Tommy (Leslie) Brown of Cartersville, Fred (Candace) Brown and Jimmy Brown, all of Reidsville; four great grandsons, Ryan, Matthew, Shawn and Hunter Brown; special friend, Hilda Tootle of Reidsville; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Glenn Williams, Neal Rogers, Buddy McCall, Floyd James, Jimmy Kennedy, and Richard Hilton. Louise McCullough Padgett, 83 Mrs. Louise McCullough Padgett, 83, died Monday, December 11, 2006, at her home. She was born and lived in Tattnall County most of her life. Mrs. Louise was a retired nurse’s aide at Metter Nursing Home and a member of the Cobbtown Baptist Church. She loved gospel music, cooking, crocheting and gardening. She made afghans to give to children in her church and was always wanting to help where needed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Padgett, Sr. and a son, John Henry Padgett. Survivors are four sons and five daughters-in-law, Jesse and Laverne Padgett of Hephzibah, Grady and Margie Padgett of Cobbtown, Jerry and Wanda Padgett of Portal, Robert and Diann Padgett of Cobbtown, and Reba Padgett of Augusta; three sisters, Inez Padgett of Cobbtown, Katie Lee White of Savannah and Ruth Barker of Metter; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday, December 14, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Home, Cobbtown Chapel, with burial in the Sunlight Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Charles L. Taylor, 50 Charles L. Taylor, 50, of Guyton, died Thursday, November 30, 2006 at his residence after a long illness. The Chatham County native was Union Boilermaker with Local #26 of Savannah. Survivors include his mother, Margie R. Hall of Savannah; a sister, Rosalind Hewett of Shallotte, NC; a brother, Raymond Taylor of Cobbtown; cousins, Wesley White and Lloyd White of Guyton; nieces and nephews, Tony Arnsdorff of Guyton, Terry Hair of Shallott, NC, Raymond Taylor III of Atlanta; and Jessie Taylor of Vidalia. James Alvin Anderson, 76 James Alvin “Poor Boy” Anderson, 76, passed away Sunday, December 3, 2006, at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick. He was born December 2, 1930, in Elbert County, Georgia to Clarence and Edna Anderson. He lived in Glennville and Long County for many years, moving to Jesup 42 years ago. He served in the Georgia National Guard from 1949 to 1952, and was retired from the Wayne County Board of Education after 16 years as a mechanic with the bus fleet. He owned and operated “Poor Boys” Monument Company for 42 years and enjoyed fishing and being with his family. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Frances Johnson Anderson of Jesup; son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Brenda Anderson of Jesup; daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and Barry Flowers, Allene and Chris Needham, all of Jesup; sister, Jean Reed of Plattville, CO; brother, Paul Anderson of Plant City, FL; three grandchildren, Erika Ginn, James Edwin Anderson, Jr., and Ashlyn Needham; three great-grandchildren, Jadalynn Ginn, Johnathan Ginn, and Hunter Logan Anderson. Carolyn Teasdell Barnes, 49 Mrs. Carolyn Teasdell Barnes, the daughter of the late Inez and David Teasdell, was born February 18, 1957, in Lyons, Toombs County, Georgia. She was baptized and joined St. James A.M.E. Church at an early age. As an active member for many years, she served in church organizations and community activities while also participating in the church choir. During her youth, she loved sports and was an avid athlete playing defense on her high school basketball team. She was joined into Holy Matrimony to Mr. Basil E. Barnes, August 17, 1979; to this union two children were born, one preceded her in death. She resided in Florida for over 20 years and became a member of New Testament Church of God. She served as a homemaker and pursued a profession in Sales and Retail managing teams across multiple divisions. In recent years, she returned to Georgia and demonstrated love and dedication in caring for her mother, Mrs. Inez Teasdell. Due to failing health, she departed this life on November 26, 2006. She leaves to cherish her memories a loving and devoted husband, Mr. Basil E. Barnes; one son, Mr. Richard E. Barnes; one daughter, Ms. LaKeena S Roberts; two brothers, Mr. David Teasdell, Jr., Mr Adolph Campbell; one grandfather, Mr. J. C. Campbell; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Inge Teasdell; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. James Ronald Fountain, 51 James Ronald Fountain born July 21, 1955, departed from this world on Tuesday November 28, 2006. Ronald was the son of Mary Fountain and the late Olin C. Fountain of Reidsville. He was born in Vidalia, but lived the majority of his life in Reidsville when his father moved the family to Reidsville in 1954 when he began a career, which would last over 34 years with the Department of Corrections, beginning at Georgia State Prison and retiring from Rogers State Prison. Like his father, Ronald retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections. He began his career at Georgia State Prison as a Correctional Officer and worked his way up to hold the positions of Unit Manager at Georgia State Prison, Deputy Warden at Smith State Prison, later Warden at Scott State Prison and Ware State Prison. At the time of his retirement he was Assistant Regional Director for the Southeast Region. He was preceded in death by his father on October 23, 1997. Ronald is survived by his wife, Susan R. Fountain of Reidsville; two sons, Colt and Devan Fountain both of Reidsville; his mother, Mary Fountain of Reidsville; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Mary Fountain of Glennville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Vickie and Attriss C. Nail of Reidsville and Lisa and Gary Tyre of Vidalia; nieces and nephews, Evan and Emily Fountain and Ryan and Brooke Collins; and a great niece, Raegan Collins. Sande Dawn Jordan, 17 Sande Dawn Jordan, 17, died October 11, 2006, at Ochsner Foundation Hospital, New Orleans, LA. She was born on January 8, 1989, and lived in Reidsville much of her life. She was preceded in death by her mother Barbara Armstrong Jordan and grandfathers David Jordan Sr. and David Stalls of Reidsville. Sande is survived by her father, Ted Jordan of Reidsville, and her stepmother Elizabeth Stewart; sisters: Brande Kirk, Mande Jordan and Tiffany Jordan; brother by love, Lee Rucker, and step-brother Devin Burgess; grandparents: Meredith Stalls of Reidsville and Dot and Frank Brinson of Sevierville, TN; adopted Pawpaw, Wes Bassett of Atlantic Beach, FL; aunts and uncles, Mary-Catherine and Reggie Ray of Reidsville, Leon and Chanda Stalls of Reidsville, Emily and Gary Leggett of Rincon, David and Mandy Jordan Jr of Great Falls, MT, Patricia Palmer of Portsmouth, VA, Ricky Poss and Kenneth Metz of Sevierville, TN. She attended the public schools of Tattnall County and was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Cobbtown. After graduating from high school in 1967, she relocated to New Jersey. There she joined Union Baptist Church. She was employed at the Urban Crisis Council Day Care Center in Passaic for over 30 years. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Covey Lee and Carrie Williamson of Garfield, NJ; one daughter, Crystal B. Williamson of Passaic, NJ; her parents, Bill and Ernestine Eason of Cobbtown and Nathan and Bethrotha Holloway of Willingboro, NJ; three grandchildren, John Hughes and Jone’t Williamson, both of Garfield, NJ, and Christoni Williamson of Passaic, NJ; one brother, Ben Eason of Cobbtown; five sisters, and two brothers-in-law, Judy Wilson of Pooler, Lynell and Steve Durden of Cobbtown, Opal Shavers of Bonaire, Rosa Maria and Daryl Byrd of Fort Walton Beach, FL, and Linda Mercer of Metter; many other relatives and friends also survive. The funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, December 7, 2006, at Union Baptist Church, Passaic, NJ. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, December 9, at the Eden Church Cemetery in Cobbtown. The remains will be viewed at Whitaker Funeral Home on Friday, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Madonna Multinational Home of Funerals, Passaic, NJ, and Whitaker Funeral Home, Metter, is in charge of arrangements.
