Obituaries for August 28, 2008 Beverly Anne Elizabeth Cook Collins, 70 Beverly Anne Elizabeth Cook Collins, 70, beloved mother and wife went to be with her Savior Jesus Christ Friday, August 22, 2008, at her home under the care of United Hospice. The Michigan native moved here 23 years ago. Beverly went to school at age 45 and became an LPN. She worked at the Candler County Hospital until her illness forced her to retire. She always had a smile on her face no matter how bad she felt. She was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Earl Collins Sr. of Collins; one son, Lloyd Sain, and two daughters and a son-in-law, Sheila and Rick Lancaster of Battle Creek, MI, and Sheryl Collins of Jesup; step children, Earl Collins Jr. of Collins and Theresa and Ro Collins of Pembrook Pine, FL; a brother, Bill Cook; two sisters, Linda Morgan and Marie Ebert, all of Michigan; grandchildren, Nikki Collins and Dennis Fedulov, Joey and Audrey Collins, Brian and Amanda Rogers, Amber, Kyle and Rachel Sain; also great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and her precious dog, Poochie. Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Reverend Jim Rogers officiating. Burial followed in the Connors Cemetery. James Davis, 64 Mr. James Davis, 64, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at the Glenvue Nursing Home where he was a resident for a number of years. He was born in Evans County on April 16, 1944, to the late Henry and Ruthie Mae Davis of Glennville, GA. He leaves to cherish his memories three sisters and brothers-in-law, Marion and Robert Collins and Bonnie Berry, both of Glennville, GA, and Shirley and Ernest Harvell of Jacksonville, FL; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy and Linda Davis, E.C. and Geraldine Davis, Jerome and Misty Davis and J.D. Davis, all of Glennville, GA, and Perry and Liz Davis of Metter, GA; one uncle and aunt, Eugene and Chaney Slaughter of Savannah, GA, and a host of other relatives and friends. Sarah Pierce Holland, 77 Sarah Pierce Holland, 77, died on Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at Hospice Savannah, with her family at her side. She was born in Surrency, GA, and had formerly been employed with Kress and J.C. Penny’s. She was a member of Central Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Glenn Vernon Holland of Garden City; daughter, Phyllis Holland of Garden City; brother, Jennings L. Ruby Crews Hutcheson, 83 Mrs. Ruby Crews Hutcheson, 83, passed away Saturday August 23, 2008, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville all of her life. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist Faith. She is preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Hutcheson; daughters, Madeline Hutcheson and Patsy Harrelson; grandson, Gary Harrelson; great-grandson, Curt Harrelson. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney and Karen Hutcheson and Eddie and Faye Hutcheson all of Reidsville; brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Inez Crews of Reidsville; sister, Glennes Gay of Reidsville; three grandchildren, six great grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Bernice Carlton Hunley Massey, 97 Bernice Carlton Hunley Massey, 97, passed away, Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at North Spring Assisted Living Center in Claxton under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. She was a native of Thomas County, having been born and reared on Greenwood Plantation near Thomasville, GA. she and her husband, Bob Massey moved to Glennville in 2001. She was an active member of The Hill Baptist Church in Augusta for over thirty years. After moving to Glennville she was a member of the The Glennville United Methodist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a dedicated homemaker. She was a great lover of nature and did not meet a rock or leaf she did not like. Her joys in life were gardening and taking care of her beloved cats, Dash and Trixie, who knew where to find a loving family and home. Her mission in life was being a caretaker, not only for her husband and children, but she also lovingly took care of her mother, several sisters and a brother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Robert William “Bob” Massey. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, LeAnne and Wendell Durrence of Glennville; son and daughter-in-law, Robert William Massey Jr. and Brittany of Atlanta; five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Gladys Lorrene Geiger Minnich, 81 Gladys Lorrene Geiger Minnich, age 81, formerly of Columbia, SC, died of pneumonia August 15, 2008, at Marietta Health and Rehab Nursing Home in Atlanta after a long battle with dementia. A private memorial service will be held near her childhood home, Reidsville, Georgia, at Rome Church cemetery on August 31. Mildred Coleman Powell, 82 Mildred Coleman Powell, 82, died Saturday, August 23, 2008, at Candler County Hospital. The Tattnall County lifelong resident was a homemaker and worked side by side with her husband farming. Milder was an avid gardener, growing beautiful roses, and she loved to fish. She was a member of the Connors Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Dean Powell of Cobbtown; two sons, Jimmie Powell of Vidalia and Eddie Powell of Warner Robins; two sisters, Evelyn Coleman of Huntsville, AL and Emma Hess of Cobbtown; two grandchildren, Joel Powell and Heather Williams and two great grandchildren. William Allen Sikes, 42 William Allen Sikes, 42, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at his residence under the care of Georgia Health Care Hospice. He was born January 21, 1966, in Wayne County and lived in Ludowici and Glennville all of his life. He was a 1984 graduate of Glennville High School and was employed with J. M. Forestry as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church. Survivors are his wife, Rita Durrence Sikes of Glennville; children, Troy, Nicky and Ben Sikes, all of Glennville; parents, Billy W. and Louise Sikes of Glennville; sister and brother-in-law, Larenda and Heath Dasher of Glennville; nephews, Logan and Jackson; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. The Lowndes County native was retired from the U.S. Army and moved to Glennville from Darien three years ago. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Denise C. Smith. He is survived by his son, Carl McCormack; granddaughters, Carolyn R. Smith of Glennville and Diane E. Smith and Sara D. Imogene Dyess Stiegman, 88 Imogene Dyess Stiegman, 88, died Monday, August 25, 2008, at her residence. The Evans County native had lived in Glennville most of her married life. She was a former beautician, having worked at Fine’s in Savannah. She was a loving mother and homemaker and a member of Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn A. Stiegman and several siblings. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Russell Terry Waters of Glennville; son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Glenda Stiegman of Isle of Palms, SC; son, Steve Stiegman of Glennville; sister, Helen Burke of Townsend; a loving caretaker and companion, Becky Laufman; seven grandchildren, Glenn A. Thomas Ray Anderson, 75 Mr. Thomas Ray Anderson, 75, passed away Sunday, August 17, 2008, at Candler Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville most of his life, before moving to Collins ten years ago. He was a US Army Veteran and retired Road Superintendent, serving many years with the Tattnall County Commissioners. Mr. Anderson was a member of the National Rifle Association and was an avid fisherman and gardener. He attended Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Myrtice Anderson, and sister, Nell Anderson Waters. He is survived by: his wife, Mrs. Gloria Foskey Anderson of Collins; a daughter, Caroline Foskey Hammann and her husband, James Hammann of Brunswick; a son, Rev. Thomas Ray Foskey Anderson and his wife, Debra Foskey of Loganville; a uncle, Clyde Anderson and his wife, Anglynn of Reidsville; five grandchildren, Sara Foskey Luke of Monroe, GA, Thomas Dallas Foskey and Alison Faye Foskey both of Loganville; Maxwell James Hammann and Taylor Caroline Hammann, both of Brunswick; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews also survive. David M. Benson, 56 David M. Benson, died on Tuesday, August 12, 2008, following a courageous battle with Multi Symptom Atrophy (MSA). David was born January 12, 1952, in Norfolk, VA,s to Samuel and Mary Benson. He grew up in Southern California and graduated from Chatsworth High School in 1970. David excelled at baseball during high school and continued to play semi-pro baseball for many years. He had a passion for music and photography, which brought joy not only to himself, but those around him. David’s generosity, kind heart, and sense of humor were an inspiration to his family and friends. On November 24, 2001, he was united in marriage to Susan J. Miller in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. In 2002, they moved to Arizona and made their home together in Cave Creek. He is survived by his mother, Mary Benson, sisters Kathy Higgins and Beverly Serpi of Southern California; mother-in-law, Geraldine D. Miller of Collins, GA; brothers and sisters-in-law Gianni Serpi of Chatsworth, CA; Doug and Claire Miller of Venetia, PA; Nancy and Rusty Tiedemann of Pleasanton, CA, and Patricia Halpin of Malta, NY; nieces and nephews, Shannon, Chad, and Lisa Higgins, Kristina and Drew Tiedemann, Patrick and Ryan Halpin, and Adam Miller, who all brightened and enriched his life. A celebration of David’s life was held on Saturday, August 16, at Messinger Mortuaries, 8555 E. Pinnacle Peak Rd in Scottsdale, AZ. Elder Herschel Alvin Ealey, 77 Elder Herschel Alvin Ealey, 77, passed away August 5, in Collins, GA. he was born June 9, 1931, in Cobbtown, GA. He was the first of seven children born to the late Jeremiah and Eunice Ealey. He attended Collins School in Collins, GA. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1952 and served in Korea for 18 months. He received an honorable discharge. In 1955, he took up residence in Miami, Florida and worked for the City of Miami Beach for more than 30 years, before retiring. He gave his life to Jesus in 1956 and later became an ordained minister. He served faithfully at El Bethel Apostolic Church in Miami, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife of more than fifty years, the late Dr. Beatrice Jackson-Ealey. He is survived by four sons, Wayne, Willie and Gerald of Miami, FL and Frank Ealey of Detroit, MI; five daughters, Gwen Hart, Joyce Davis, Mary Doray, Beatrice Ealey and Francine Murphy, of Miami, FL; brother, Elder James Hosea Ealey of Detroit, MI; sisters, Reverend Pearlie Inez Ealey-Forrest of Collins, GA; Rubye Mae Florence of Dayton, OH; Mary Helen Goines of Atlanta, GA, and Reverend Geraldine Marie Banks of Hamilton, OH; 29 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren. James Hensley, 80 James Hensley, 80, of Metter died Monday August 18, 2008, at Ogeechee Area Hospice. He was born in Bulloch but lived most of his life in the Cobbtown and Metter area. He was a retired farmer and owned and operated Hensley Tobacco Warehouse with the Hensley Group for several years. James was an avid sportsman and a member of the Portal Hunting club, where he was a past president. He loved spending his time following and supporting the local athletics. He was a graduate of Georgia Military Academy, attended Gordon Military College, University of North Carolina and University of George and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jean Tillman Hensley; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Louisa Hensley; daughter and son-in-law, Jerri and Gregg Wolff; sister, Ann Daniels, all of Metter; brother, Don Hensley of Cobbtown; grandchildren, Thomas, Angela and Michall Wolff, J.B. and John Mitchell Hensley. Audrey Powell Hill, 86 Mrs. Audrey Powell Hill passed away Sunday morning August 17, 2008, at age 86. “MeMa” was a patient, giving, and loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister to her family and a special friend to all who knew her. She was an expert seamstress until her health forced her to give it up. She was a fighter who met every challenge head on. She loved life and she loved being with family and friends, going out to dinner, shopping and growing flowers. MeMa was preceded in death by her parents, Matthew L. and Inez Powell; husband, Cecil Hill; a sister, Lucy Smith and two brothers, Rabun Powell and Howard Powell. She is survived by her children, Billy and Betty Joyce Hill of Nashville, GA, Suzanne and Mark Tootle of Pooler, Kim and Bill Thompson of Hayesville, NC, and Stan and Karen Hill of Richmond Hill; a sister, Wilma Meeks of Tucker; a brother and sister-in-law, Bernice and Betty Powell of Claxton; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; many loved nieces and nephews, and so very many special friends. He was employed with Ohoopee Construction Company. Rosetta Walker McCloud, 89 Mrs. Rosetta Walker McCloud, 89, of Glennville, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2008, at the Glenview Nursing Home in Glennville after an extended illness. She was a life long resident of Tattnall County and a member of Holy Temple Pentecostal Church in Glennville, GA. She is survived by two sons, Lucious Charles (LC) Walker and Ervin Walker, both of Glennville; three daughters, Mrs. Eloise Stokes, Mrs. Gladys Doe and Mrs. Emma Jean Lewis, all of Glennville, GA; one sister, Mrs. Lula Johnson of Glennville, GA; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Jo W. Morris, 86 Mrs. Jo W. Morris, 86, passed away Monday, August 18, 2008, at the Doctor’s Hospital of Reidsville. She graduated from Toombs County High School in 1936 and attended Georgia Teacher’s College. She taught in the Tattnall County School System for six years. She lived in Hinesville for 40 years, where she was a member of the Hinesville First Baptist Church. She moved to Collins in 1982 where she joined the Collins First Baptist Church. She is survived by: her husband of 63 years, Mr. James Morris of Collins; a daughter, Nancy Morris of Huntsville, AL; a son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Sherlyn Morris of Orange Park, FL; and several nieces and nephews also survive. The Tattnall County native had lived in Reidsville most of her life. She was a retired seamstress and was a member of the Reidsville Baptist Church. She will be missed by many. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and Rusty Welch of Reidsville; a granddaughter, Andrea Welch of Reidsville; a grandson and his wife, Adam and Heidi Welch of Reidsville; one niece and one nephew also survive. Ricky Barnard, 51 Ricky Barnard, 51, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2008, at his residence. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of his life and worked in the construction industry. He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Barnard; sister, Elaine Willis and brothers, Wendall, Gary and David Barnard. Elder Willie Brown Elder Willie Brown passed away Friday, August 8, 2008, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro, Georgia. Elder Brown is a native of Tattnall County and the Pastor of the Railroad Avenue Church of God in Jesup, GA. He was a former employee of Ford Motor Company, presently known as Brent Walker Ford for 53 years. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Pinkie Brown of Glennville, GA; one daughter, Ms. Annie Pearl Brown of Reidsville, GA; three grandchildren, Mrs. Rhonda Richardson, Derek Wicker and Mrs. Myra Cooper; and seven great grandchildren; two brothers, Bennie Brown of Dallas, TX, and Daniel Brown of Glennville, GA; four sisters, Mary Lizzie Brown and Mrs. Evelyn Wilson, both of Boston, MA, Mrs. Betty Ann Davis of Statesboro, GA, and Mrs. Eva Pearl Jordan of Glennville, GA; and a host of other relatives and friends. Julian Butler Herring, 78 Julian Butler Herring, 78, passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at Candler Hospital in Savannah. The Sampson County NC, native had lived in Tampa, FL, many years before moving to Savannah in June of 2000. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a retired auditor with the Internal Revenue Service. He also owned and operated Montgomery-Jackson Tax Service. He is survived by a very loved lifetime friend, Betty Van Horne of Savannah; four nieces, Mary Margaret (Jerry) Hobbs of Clinton, NC, Patty Kelly Brisson of Dunn, NC, Kathy Kelly Robertson of Charlotte, NC and Karen Kelly (Bruce) Dean of West Minister, MD; several great nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, August 8, 2008, at the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Glen Ring and Mr. Al Venable officiating. Margle “Mike” Reed, 78 Margle “Mike” Reed, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at Healthfield Hospice Center in Riverdale. He was born June 18, 1930, in Gurley, AL, and was a U.S. Air Force Veteran with 20 years of service. He retired in 1986 from the FAA as an Air Traffic Controller and lived in the Atlanta area. He was of the Baptist Faith and is preceded in death by a son, Michael Reed. He is survived by his wife, Dilla N. Reed of Fayetteville; daughters, Peggy Kicklighter and Teresa Dubberly, both of Glennville; daughter-in-law, Jan Reed of Atlanta; stepsons, Bob Morgan of Atlanta and Scott Morgan of High Point, N.C.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, August 8, 2008, at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery with full military honors. Reverend Stephen Windham officiated. Evelyn Gary Crenshaw Sollosi, 60 Evelyn Gary Crenshaw Sollosi, 60, passed away Monday, August 11, 2008, at her residence under the care of her family and Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Charlotte, NC, native had lived in Glennville for the past 35 years. She was in the 1965 graduating class of Harding High School in Charlotte and the class of 1970 of Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MO. She graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Development and taught kindergarten at Glennville Christian Academy and Pinewood Christian Academy. She was employed with The Glennville Bank for many years and was a homemaker, loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Hagan Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday School teacher and pastor’s wife. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Tom Sollosi of Glennville; sons, Tom Sollosi and Tim Sollosi, both of Glennville; granddaughter, Anna Grace Sollosi of Glennville; mother, Ruth Crenshaw of Fort Mill, SC; brothers, Wayne Crenshaw of Denver, NC, and Everett Crenshaw of Bath, NC; several nieces and nephews including, Dawn Finn and Cindy Manley, both of Charlotte, NC, and Raymond Crenshaw of Boone, NC. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 13, 2008, from the Chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Mike Gay, Elder Dirk Casteen, Elder Snap Lewis and Elder Bryan Mitchell officiating. Burial followed in Beard’s Creek Church Cemetery. Laverne W. Akins, 67 Laverne W. Akins, age 67, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at her residence. Laverne was born on February 27, 1941, in Tattnall County, Georgia to George L. and Robie Wilson. She is preceded in death by her son, Fred Jasper Akins, her parents, a brother and four sisters. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Fred Akins; a daughter Donna L. Akins both of Corpus Christi, Texas; two sisters, Barbara (Jimmy) Vincent of Savannah, Georgia, Mary (Paul) Howrey of Richland, North Carolina; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, friends and neighbors. A funeral service was held on Monday, August 4, 2008, at the Seaside Funeral Home Chapel, and interment followed at Seaside Memorial Park. Lorie Collins Anderson, 86 Mrs. Lorie Collins Anderson, 86, went to eternal rest on Sunday August 3, 2008, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice House in Statesboro, surrounded by her family and friends. The Tattnall County native had lived in the Hillview Community all of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of the Rogers Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Burtie and Minnie Collins; brother, Clifford Collins; sons, Charles B. Anderson and Ronnie J. Anderson; and grandson, Al Anderson. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Jeff Anderson of the Hillview Community; two daughters-in-law, Lois Anderson of Collins and Gail Rushing of Richmond Hill; three sisters, Bertha Shuman, Adell Sapp, both of Collins, and Martha Jane Sikes, of Metter; one brother, J.H. Collins of Lyons; five grandchildren, Sheri and Randy Hendrix of Claxton, Danny and Michelle Anderson of Perkins, Keith and Joanna Anderson of Sylvania, Ricky and Tabatha Anderson of Collins and Melanie and Ed Galbreath of Richmond Hill; eight great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Danny Anderson, Keith Anderson, Ricky Anderson, Randy Hendrix, Edward Galbreath, and Travis Anderson. Honorary pallbearers were Harley Hendrix and Austin Lewis. Virginia Cohen Cavallaro, 82 Virginia Cohen Cavallaro, 82, passed away Sunday, August 3, 2008, at Doctor’s Hospital in Reidsville. She was born in Screven County, graduated from Glennville High School (Class of 1943) and lived in Absecon, New Jersey for many years, prior to moving back to Glennville in 1972. While living in New Jersey she worked with A & P Grocery Stores, and as a lingerie model and a snow ski instructor. After moving to Glennville she worked with Waters Red and White, Waters Bi-Rite and Piggly-Wiggly Grocery Stores, where she retired in 2006 after 45 years of service. She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church where she was instrumental in the Toys for Tots program. She was best known for her cheesecakes, quilting and ceramics. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carman Cavallaro; mother, Louise Dixon Youmans and brother, Billy Cohen. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Roy Woods of Glennville; special aunt, Mary Mangum of Glennville; sister-in-law, Lorine Cohen of Glennville; nephews, Eddie Cohen and Norman Cohen of Glennville; niece, Pam Brannen of Glennville; great-nieces, Risha Cohen, Amanda Cohen and Erin Cohen; great-nephews, Darren Cohen and Jeremy Brannen. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Madison Street Baptist Church of Starke, FL. She is preceded in death by a son, Scott DeLoach. She is survived by her husband, Roy DeLoach; son and daughter-in-law, Roy Jr. and Vicki DeLoach; granddaughter, Kaylee DeLoach, all of Ludowici; brothers, Mitchell Barnard of Ryepatch and Wayne Mobley of Glennville; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services were held at Pigot Branch Church Cemetery, August 3, 2008, with Reverend Bryan Anderson officiating.
