Obituaries for August 30, 2007 Martha Jane Banks, 75 Martha Jane Banks died Thursday, August 23, 2007, at Piedmont Hospital as a result of a stroke. She was born November 15, 1931, in Glennville and was a long-time resident of Atlanta. She is preceded in death by her parents, Felton and Vera Durrence Banks. She was a graduate of Georgia Southern Teacher’s College in Statesboro. She taught school for several years before joining the staff of an educational publishing company. Miss Banks began a career in personnel with an agency in Atlanta and with the Girl Scouts of the USA. With the Girl Scouts, she traveled throughout the southeast advising local councils regarding their staffing and personnel needs, until the National Girl Scout Organization closed their regional Atlanta Office. Her next career move was to Georgia State University, where she was a Career Program Coordinator in the Georgia Career Information Center. She served as Elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta and has been involved in the ministry to Homeless Women and other community outreach programs. She volunteered with Zoo Atlanta, the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Southeastern Flower Show and Tour Championship. She also served in leadership roles with the Center of Positive Aging. She is survived by her aunt, Elise Smith of Savannah, numerous cousins and other relatives. Graveside interment services were held on Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Elder Spencer Moore officiating. Elton “Boggie” Wade Clark, 65 Elton “Boggie” Wade Clark, 65, passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2007, at his residence, under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Long County Georgia native had lived in this area most of his life. He was a retired truck driver and former employee of Rotary Corporation. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Amburn Clark of Glennville; children, Alton Wade Clark (Lisa) of Glennville, Beth Anderson (Danny) and Nicole DeLoach (Virgil) all of Claxton; sisters, Mary Clark, Jeanette Reddish and Janice Deloach, all of Glennville; brother, John Clark of Jesup; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. on August 30, 2007, at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, August 31, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home with Elder Spencer Moore officiating. Rufus “Buck” Collins, 92 Rufus “Buck” Collins, 92, of Cobbtown died Monday, August 27, 2007, at his home. He had lived in Tattnall County most of his life and was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation. Buck loved fishing and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Millard and Eva Collins and a son-in-law, Mel Mock. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eva Mae Hendrix Collins; three sons, James R. “Buddy” Collins (Melita), Danny Ray Collins (Debra) and Larry Dean Collins (Betty Jo), all of Cobbtown; four daughters, Mary Alice Fields (Homer) of Normantown, Virginia “Jenkie” Hart (James) of Statesboro, Mary Sue Collins of Cobbtown and Willette Mock of Rocky Ford; two brothers, Bill Collins of Marietta and Robert Collins of Atlanta; a sister, Tera Bell McGowan of Atlanta; 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at the Cobbtown Baptist Church with Reverend Walter Leveritt and Reverend K.C. Seabury officiating. Robert Oswell “R.O.” Kimbrell, 85 Mr. Robert Oswell “R.O.” Kimbrell, 85, passed away early Sunday morning, August 26, 2007, at the Satilla Regional Medical Center. A native of Pierce County, he had lived here most of his life, except for when he served his country in the Merchant Marines. Mr. Kimbrell had farmed for 57 years. He was the chairman of the Advisory Board for the RYDC, was the president of the Forest Owners Association and was the director for Pierce County on the Satilla Soil and Water Conservation Board. Mr. Kimbrell was a member of the Mershon Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and was a member/teacher of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. He had 47 years of perfect attendance in Sunday School. Mr. Kimbrell was a son of the late Charlie K. and Mary Elizabeth “Mamie” Dowling Kimbrell and was also preceded in death by a sister, Birdie Ariel Kimbrell and a brother, Foy Kimbrell. Survivors are his wife of 57 years, Clara Crawford Kimbrell of Mershon; daughter, Cheryl Mobley of Mershon; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Linda Kimbrell and Dr. Casey “Charlie” and Tammy Kimbrell all of Mershon and Reverend Steve and Regis Kimbrell of Reidsville; three foster sisters, Ruby Rawls of Tennessee, Louise Druhl of Atlanta and Rose Lee Calhoun of Waycross; nine grandchildren, Paula Mobley, Cretia Ponsell, Anitra (Stevie) Young, Karissa Kimbrell, Alyson Kimbrell, Jessica Kimbrell, Casey Kimbrell, Jr., Christopher Kimbrell and MariClaire Kimbrell; two great-grandchildren, Taylor Hale and Dock Allen and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Charles E. McNear, 68 Charles E. McNear, 68, died Monday, August 27, 2007, in Savannah. Mr. McNear was born in Odum, Georgia, the son of the late Woodrow and Tommie McNear. He retired from National Gypsum after twenty-five years in Mechanical Maintenance. After his retirement he continued working as a self employed Dry Cleaning Equipment Repairman for fifteen years. Charles enjoyed many years as a Scout Leader for Troop 1 in Savannah. Mr. McNear was preceded in death by his son who died in October, 2003, Eric McNear and his brother, Phillip McNear. Truett Purvis, 82 Truett Purvis, 82, passed away Monday, August 27, 2007, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of his life. He was a World War II veteran, a retired farmer and school bus driver with the Tattnall County Board of Education for over 18 years. He attended Mendes Baptist Church and Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Faye Purvis Anderson and a son-in-law, Alan Purcell. Marcus M. Sands, 86 Marcus M. Sands, 86, passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2007, at his residence under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area most of his life. He was retired from Union Camp Corporation as District Forest Land Supervisor. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of Glennville Free Will Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Isabel Welborn Sands of Glennville; a son, Tom Sands of Atlanta; stepsons, Ronald Robinson (Jeaneine) of Hinesville and Fleming Robinson (Carolyn) of Columbus; caretaker, Edna Collins and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Joan Bacon White, 86 Joan Bacon White, 86, died Thursday, August 23, 2007, at home in Glennville, GA. The Tattnall County native began her career as an educator at the age of 17. She was a long time resident of Emanuel County, where she was Supervisor of Instruction for the Emanuel County School System for more than 25 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Dennis White and sisters, Opal Kany and Barbara Grinstead. She is survived by a son, Dennis Bacon White of Glennville; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 25, 2007, at the Chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home, with Reverend Vance Riggins officiating. Obituaries for August 23, 2007 Charles Henry Berry, 75 The sun rose early in the morning on November 4, 1931. A baby boy was born, by the name of Charles Henry Berry to the late Jasper and Georgia Berry. Later in age he married Patricia Coley Berry on February 27, 1955. Three children preceded him in death, Janet, Marquette and Gwinnette. Five sisters and two brothers also preceded him in death. Then the sun set at 10:00 a.m. on Charles H. John Elton Grooms, 74 John Elton Grooms, 74, passed away Friday, August 17, 2007, at Candler Hospital in Savannah. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of his life. He was a former member of the Georgia National Guard and a retired masonry contractor in the building construction industry. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Blocker Grooms of Glennville; sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Julie Grooms of Dublin and Jason and Jennifer Grooms of Brooklet; sister, Marlene Deal of Bloomingdale; brother, Jimmy Grooms of Claxton; grandchildren, David and Dori Grooms, and several nieces and nephews. James Franklin Hendrix, 70 Mr. James Franklin Hendrix, 70, died suddenly at his residence on Tuesday, August 14, 2007. He was a native of Bulloch County, but had lived in Glennville over 30 years. He was a mechanic by trade, loved to watch the Braves, was an avid fisherman, and loved his church. He was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church of Glennville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Hendrix and Ann Howell, and a brother, William Aubrey “Bill” Hendrix. Survivors include a son, James Mark Hendrix of Ft. Myers, FL; ex wife, Eleanor Hendrix of Ft. Myers, FL; two step-daughters, Linda Jaffrey and husband, Joel of Baxley and Barbara Barttlet of Bokeelia, FL; three sisters, Pat Abbott, Debra Baker and Linda Williams, all of Atlanta; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on August 18, 2007, at the Chapel of Carters Funeral Home with Reverend James Holland officiating. Interment followed in the Love’s Chapel Church Cemetery in Glennville. Wilbur Gene Kennedy, 61 Wilbur Gene Kennedy, 61, of Collins died Friday, August 17, 2007, at his home. The Tattnall County lifelong resident was a 1965 graduate of Collins High School and was an Army veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. He worked most of his life as an electrical contractor and farmer and was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church. Wilbur loved fishing, hunting and softball. He is survived by a son, Brian Gene Kennedy of Collins; daughter and son-in-law, Melody and Francis E. Lightsey of Brooklet; three brothers, Billy Kennedy of Cobbtown, Edward Kennedy of Collins and Larry Kennedy of Vidalia; two sisters, Betty Brown of Collins and Julia Hook of Savannah; two grandchildren, Dylan Gage Lightsey and Cierra Morgan Lightsey. He was a retired truck driver and a member of Smyrna Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Lloyd E. McGlashan Jr. and a daughter, Janet McGlashan. Lamont Moody, 75 Lamont Moody, 75, passed away Friday, August 17, 2007, at Ogeechee Area Hospice Center in Statesboro. The Volusia County Florida native had lived in Glennville most of his life. He served his country with honor during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army and went on to serve in the U.S. Merchant Marines for over 35 years. He was a former funeral assistant and a member of Glennville United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Madera Folsom Moody of Glennville; daughters and son-in-law, Diane and Irbie Moody of Glennville and Patty Lang of McDonough; sisters, Laverne M. Coleman of Folkston and Loree M. Miller of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Kristen Moody and Parick Hall, and several nieces and nephews. Elizabeth Speer Ratzel, 68 Elizabeth Speer Ratzel, 68, passed away Saturday, August 18, 2007, at her residence under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice. The Newton County, GA, native had lived in the Ft. Stewart/ Hinesville since 1995 moving to Glennville in 2003. She was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Maynard E. Ratzel Jr. of Glennville; children, Kenneth Palmer of Atlanta, Hammond Palmer (Brenda) of Claxton, Eric Palmer of Atlanta, Teresa Anthony of Stockbridge, Maynard E. Ratzel III (Lynn) of Glennville, Jason Ratzel and Michael Ratzel, both of Atlanta; sister Lucille Moore (Riley) of Sharpsburg; brother, Sam Speer of Forest Park; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Samuel James “Sammie J.” Rhodes, 84 Samuel James “Sammie J.” Rhodes, 84, of Collins, formerly of Abbeville, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2007, in the Ogeechee Area Hospice Center in Statesboro. Funeral services were held Sunday, August 19, 2007, in the Lebanon Baptist Church in Abbeville. The Reverend Chuck Taylor and Reverend Jim Faircloth officiated over the ceremony. Interment followed in the Lebanon Cemetery with military rites. Mr. Rhodes was born on November 26, 1922, in Wilcox County, but had lived in Collins since 1974. He was son of the late John Albert Rhodes and Vera Eliza Tomberlin Rhodes. He was a retired school teacher, principal, mortician and funeral director. He was a member of the Collins First Baptist Church and was an ordained Missionary Baptist Minister. He was a member of the Western Light Masonic Lodge #272 and was former Wilcox County coroner. He served his country with honor during World War II and the Korean Conflict in the United States Air Force and Army. He is survived by his wife, Joicelyn C. Rhodes of Collins; son, Warren (Connie) Rhodes of Allen, TX; sisters, Alice R. Dowdy of Gulfport, MS; and Johnnie R. Knight of Vandiver, AL; three grandchildren, Michelle R. (Daniel) Gerber, Steven R. Rhodes, and Stacy W. Rhodes; three great-grandchildren, Natasha Gerber, Abigayle Gerber and Samantha Joy (Sami J) Gerber. Rachel Rubena Surrency, 80 Rachel Rubena Surrency, 80, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2007. She was born to Rev. Tyson King and Iona Moore King March 23, 1927, in Glenwood, GA, in Wheeler County. She attended Wheeler and Tattnall County schools. Sis. Rachel had a great experience with God and received Jesus Christ as her Saviour and Lord. He filled her with His Holy Spirit some 40 odd years ago. Sis. Rachel had a ministry with men, women, boys and girls and she was able to meet each person at their level. She didn’t have a problem with their condition or color. She would tell them what Jesus would and could do for their life if they just received Him as their Saviour and Lord. She ministered especially with the children; Burns Village has lost a great servant of God and a prayer warrior. She leaves to mourn her homegoing, two loving daughters, Mrs. Maxine Coley (Norris) of Reidsville, GA, Janice Oglesby (Carl) of Glennville, GA; two sons, Freddie Hicks Jr. (Gail) of Glennville, GA, Johnny Brown (Mamie) of Augusta, GA; three brothers, George King (Velma), Sam King (Sherry), all of Miami, FL, and Ruben King (Novella) of Glennville, GA; three sisters, Min. Pinkie Brown (Rev. Clark Gardner, 58 Clark Gardner, 58, died Friday, August 10, 2007, at Heritage Park Nursing Home in Savannah. He was a Tattnall County native but moved away for a while. After returning to Glennville in 1989, he worked for Duramatic Products Manufacturing Company from November 1989 until his retirement due to illness in June 2000. He attended St. James A.M.E. Church. Jack E. Terrell, 78 Jack E. Terrell, 78, passed away Saturday, August 11, 2007, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Toombs County native had lived in Glennville most of his life. He was a member of Glennville Church of God where he previously served on the Pastor’s Council, and as Sunday School Superintendent. He loved God, his church and family and was an avid fisherman and Volkswagen auto mechanic. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Elaine Terrell Thompson and brothers, Luke and T. E. Terrell. Iris H. Perkins, 79 Mrs. Iris H. Perkins, age 79 of the Blue Ridge Community of Lyons, died Sunday, August 5, 2007, in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after a year-long battle with cancer. She was a native of Toombs County and lived most of her life in Lyons. She retired after 47 years of service from Oxford Manufacturing Company and was a member of the Marietta Freewill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. Wynne Perkins, a daughter, Shirley Harvey Larisey and her parents, Rufus Findley and Netta Monroe Paradice. Donald S. Wright, 81 Donald S. Wright passed away suddenly Sunday, August 5, 2007, at Winn Army Hospital. He was born November 25, 1925, in St. Petersburg, FL, and had lived in Augusta and Savannah for many years before moving to Glennville in 1995. He had a lifetime career in the newspaper business with the Augusta Chronicle and Savannah Morning News, retiring in 1993. He was a lifetime member of Sertoma International, being a charter member of the Athens and Augusta Clubs. He was an avid bowler for many years, and served as President and Secretary for many leagues. He is survived by a loving wife of 54 years, Frances A. Wright of Glennville. Sandra “Sandy” Hill Lanier, 67 Sandra “Sandy” Hill Lanier, 67, passed away Monday, July 23, 2007, at her home in Melbourne, FL. She was a gentle, loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her. She will be sorely missed by her family. Sandy was a Tattnall County native and lived in Melbourne for 48 years. She had professional experience with A.G. Edwards, Xerox, and Metropolitan Insurance. The joy of her work experience, however, was the last 30 years working for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as construction coordinator and business administrator for Victory Christian Center and last, New Hope Sanctuary. Annie Lou Purvis Mattox, 96 Annie Lou Purvis Mattox, 96, passed away Monday, July 23, 2007, at Autumn Winds Nursing Home in San Antonio, TX. She was born August 7, 1910, in Mendes, Georgia to Calvin and Fronny Purvis, she survived ten brothers and sisters and a husband of 70 years, Ben G. Mattox. She will be remembered by many as the smiling face behind the counter at Mattox Store in the Stony Hill Community for 35 years. After another 15 years spent running a second store in Winter Park, Florida she happily returned to Glennville to her many friends and family. She joined the Glennville Garden Club on her return to Georgia and loved to quilt and sew for the Sweet Onion Festival and to teach others how to quilt. She was awarded the Garden Club Member of the Year in 1989, a great joy to her. She was a beloved mother and a caring friend to all she met. She was the oldest member of Glennville First Christian Church, where she loved all the youth and was very supportive of them. In her later years at the Glenvue Nursing Home she was very happy and loved everyone, especially roommate and niece, Rhonda Waters. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Gwytha “Penny” and Tom Ryan of San Antonio, TX; a granddaughter, Sherry Mullen of San Antonio, TX; great-grandchildren, Melissa (Mrs. Vance) Weltner, Michael and Courtney Mullen, Megan K. Horacek; great great grandchildren, Braeden and Abigail Wiltner, and Shelby Mullen, all of San Antonio, TX, and several nieces and nephews. Dr. John Darsey Moore, 92 Dr. John Darsey Moore, 92, died Thursday, July 19, 2007, at his residence in Dunwoody. Dr. Moore was born in Cobbtown on February 16, 1915. His parents were Dr. Grover Moore and Eva Jane Darsey Moore. He moved to Delray Beach, Florida when he was 10. He attended the University of Florida and then transferred to the University of Georgia where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1938. He attended Emory University and earned a doctor of medical dentistry degree in 1942. He was also awarded a doctor of dental surgery degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He was drafted into the U.S. Air Force and served in the Dental Corps in North Africa and Italy during World War II from 1942 until his honorable discharge with the rank of Major in 1945 at the U.S. Air Force base in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He and his wife moved to Dunwoody two years ago. He was a member of the Florida Dental Association and a lifelong member of the dental fraternity, Delta Sigma Delta. He is survived by his wife, Anne Goodale Moore of Dunwoody; daughters and sons-in-law, Martha Anne Moore and Steven Sheppard of Dunwoody, Darsey Jeanette Moore and David Shultz of Downers Grove, IL; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ellen Sheppard of Dunwoody; grandsons, Charles Douglas Schultz and John Vernon Schultz of Downers Grove, IL. He loved fishing, motorcycles and the outdoors and was of Baptist Faith. George A. Zettler, 79 George A. Zettler, 79, died Saturday, July 28, 2007, in Savannah. He was born in Effingham County, raised in Savannah and joined the United States Marine Corps in World War II at the age of seventeen. He was awarded the Bronze Star for saving the life of a man while under heavy enemy fire in Chosin Reservoir in Korea. He retired from the Marine Corps as a Captain in 1971. Mr. Zettler graduated from the John Marshall Law School and became an attorney in Savannah. He was elected City Alderman for the Sixth District and served for 13 years on Savannah City Council. He worked for many years on the Vietnam Memorial and raised money for the World War II Monument. He was a National Director of the Chosin Few and served as Judge Advocate of the American Legion, Post 184 and the Marine Corps League. He enjoyed cooking for the Marine Corps League meeting and for the Marine Corps Reservists en route to Iraq. He is survived by his wife of 57years, Esteen Zettler of Savannah; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dennis Whetzel of Savannah; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Patricia Zettler of Faulkville; granddaughters, Victoria Miller and Tiffany Whetzel; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at the Chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home with Elder David Summerford officiating.
