Leroy Anderson, 95

Leroy Anderson, 95, died Wednesday at Candler County Hospital under Georgia Home Health Care Hospice. The Tattnall County native and lifelong resident was a retired farmer and carpenter. A wonderful Papa to his grand children, he loved gardening, his farm animals and going to Cobbtown for a daily Coke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rebie Crabbe Anderson.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Earl Hughes of Meldrim and Kaye and Jackey Sikes of Cobbtown; a brother, Clyde Anderson of Reidsville; grandchildren, Jeff Hughes, Lee Hughes, Terri Hughes, Scott Padgett and Matt Padgett; and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 20, 2007, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with Reverend Ronald Warren officiating. Burial followed in Anderson Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jeff Hughes, Lee Hughes, Scott Padgett, Matt Padgett, Joey Anderson and Mancy Turner.

James A. (Jim) Kemp, 62

James A. (Jim) Kemp, 62, died Sunday, April 22, 2007, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. The Toombs County native had lived in Brunswick and Atlanta for many years, moving back to Glennville several years ago. He was employed by MARTA System for many years as a computer hardware specialist and was of Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, James A. Kemp and mother, Marjorie Durrence Hires.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Evelyn Kemp of Atlanta; granddaughter, Maria Kemp of Atlanta; half-sisters, Denise Dixon and Elise Squires of Glennville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral services were private.

Sherrie Thomas-Pough, 56

Sherrie Thomas-Pough, 56, died Sunday, April 22, 2007, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. The Bulloch County native graduated from high school in Reidsville. She lived most of her adult life in Collins where she was a member of The Church of God in Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Conny Pough, Sr. of Collins; one son, Conny Pough, Jr. of Collins; two daughters, Venita Darien of Hanover, MD and Arletha Pough of Savannah; three brothers, O.C. Thomas, Jr., Robert Thomas and Collis Thomas all of Miami, FL; five sisters, Jesse Ruth Salvage of Detroit, MI, Precious Conyers of Tampa, FL, Henrietta Carter of Miami, FL, Patricia Williams of Metter and Brenda Baddy of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Clarence Pough and Camron Tilmon; several aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.

The funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Whitaker Funeral Home in Metter. Burial will follow in Wilkerson Cemetery in Collins. Visitation will be Friday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Whitaker Funeral Home.

Roy Mitchell Baxter, Jr., 46

Roy Mitchell Baxter, Jr., 46, died April 9, 2007, as a result of injuries sustained in an accident involving a train and a motor grader. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area most of his life. He was employed by the Long County Road Department for many years and was a member of Poplar Head Baptist Church. He was an avid fox- hunter and a member of the Beard’s Creek Hunting Club and GA Dog Hunters Association.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Lou Morris of Glennville; parents, Wanda S. and Jackie Holland of Ludowici and Mitchell and Alethia Baxter of Ludowici; brothers and sisters, Rachel and Steven Moore, Brad and Kelly Baxter and Hope and David Newell, all of Ludowici; daughter, Melissa Stanfield of Glennville; granddaughter, Brittany Stanfield; great-grandchild, Jayden Grimes, nephews, Nicholas Moore, Devin Newell and Garrett Baxter; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 12, 2007, at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home in Glennville. Burial followed in Glennville City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Employees of Long County Road Department.

Honorary pallbearers were Beard’s Creek Hunting Club and Georgia Dog Hunter’s Association.

Virginia P. Bland, 92

Virginia P. Bland, 92, died Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Liberty County native had lived in this area most of their life. She was a retired dietary worker at Tattnall Memorial Hospital. She loved to sew, quilt and travel and was a member of Beard’s Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Remer Kelly Bland; daughter, Doretha Blocker, and son, Johnny Bland.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Kenneth Blocker of Glennville and Kathryn and Fredrick Purvis of Swainsboro; sister, Vivian Wilson of Savannah; bother, I.B. Porter of Chapin, SC; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 14, 2007, at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with Reverend Jerry Knight officiating. Burial followed in New Bethel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bobby Blocker, Kelly Bland, Joe Blocker, Garland Wilson, Kevin Purvis and Michael Purvis.

Goldie Bacon, 74

Goldie Bacon, 74, passed away April 4, 2007, at home.

The Somerset, OH, native was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church in Glennville, GA. She lived in Tampa, FL, before moving to Claxton about 22 years ago.

She was a loving housewife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Curtis Bacon of Claxton; one son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Carrie Bacon of Lakeland, FL; one brother, Johnny McCabe of OH; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Saturday, April 7, 2007, at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in Brewton Cemetery.

Jack Leon Cheney, 84

Jack Leon Cheney, 84, of Metter died Thursday in Statesboro at East Georgia Regional Hospital. The Tattnall County native lived in Reidsville 40 years and lived in Statesboro from 1963 to 1990 when he retired to Metter. Mr. Cheney was a Navy veteran, serving in World War II and was a Warrant Officer with the U.S. National Guard. He was a member of the Metter United Methodist Church and a past board member of the Reidsville and Statesboro Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Mallard Cheney and a granddaughter, Kimberly DeLoach.

He is survived by three daughters and a sons-in-laws, Joy and Al Minich of Wooddale, IL, Gay Cheney of St. Mary’s, GA, and Jan and Jerry DeLoach of Statesboro; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel-Metter. Reverend Jimmy Towson officiated. Burial followed in Reidsville City Cemetery. Military Honors were observed.

Ogden Doremus, 85

Ogden Doremus, 85, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at Candler County Hospital. An Atlanta native, he was born in 1921 to Estes Doremus and Mary (Dolly) McAdory Doremus. In 1960, he moved to Savannah from Atlanta and established the law firm Doremus and Karsman. He and his wife Carol moved to Metter in 1972. He was a member of the Metter United Methodist Church.

Ogden was a partner in the Metter law firm if Doremus, Jones and Smith. He was Candler County State Court Judge for four terms ending in 2004. He received a law degree from Emory University in 1949. While in law school, he met and married his beloved wife, Carolyn Greene Doremus. She preceded him in death in 1989. Doremus, a World War II veteran, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-1946.

Called “Georgia’s Hero” by the state’s environmental community, he was one of the first trustees of the Georgia Conservancy and was instrumental in legislation declaring marshes to be state property, resulting in the Marshland Protection Act. He spoke at Georgia’s first Earth Day event and served as executive committee member of the Georgia Chapter of the Sierra Club. Doremus co-founded the Georgia Center for Law in the Public Interest. He was appreciated for his untiring work in the environmental community and was a mentor to the current leadership of these organizations.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Lisa Doremus of Westport, MA; two daughters, Celia J. Doremus of Arlington, MA; Dale M. Doremus of Santa Fe, NM; and a granddaughter, Carolyn Dixie Doremus of Westport, MA.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, April 9, 2007, at the Metter United Methodist Church with burial in the Lake Cemetery. John I. Fennell, 67

John I. Fennell, 67, passed away Friday, April 6, 2007, at Tattnall Community Hospital. The Tattnall County native lived in this area all of his life. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, retired from Georgia Department of Corrections and the Tattnall County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of Twin Oaks Baptist Church, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lynn Fennell of Reidsville, daughters and sons-in-law, Victoria and Wendell Sikes of Collins, Traci and Jeff Rogers of Glennville and Staci and Sam Joseph also of Glennville; son and daughter-in-law, John Carroll and B.J. Fennell of Reidsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Cleveland Blocker of Immokalee, FL and Glenda and Larry Anderson of Dalton, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Jo Fennell of New Branch; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Bobby R. Harold, 63

Bobby R. Harold, 63, passed away Friday, April 6, 2007, at Memorial Health University Medical Center. The McIntosh County native had lived in this area since 1967. He was retired from Georgia National Guard and MATES at Ft. Stewart, after 31 years of service. He was a member of Philadelphia Lodge #73 the York-Rite in Savannah and Beards Creek Hunting Club.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sara Gordon; son, Bobby Randel (Robbie) Harold II, and brother, Jack C. Bozeman.

He is survived by his wife, Imogene (Punk) Harold of Glennville; son, Kelly Harold of Glennville; sister, Pat Grubbs of Glennville, grandchildren, Bobby Randel Harold III, of Darien and Chasitie N. Harold of Glennville.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 9, 2007, at the Chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home, and were conducted by Reverend Parnell Aldridge and Reverend Oscar Rowe Jr. Burial followed in DeLoach Family Cemetery with Masonic Graveside service.

Ricky Laverne Matthews, 44, of Reidsville died at his home Thursday, April 5, 2007.

Mr. Matthews was born in Montgomery County.

Survivors include his parents, Gary and Geraldine Roberts of St. Augustine, FL; sister, Gail Creel of Dublin; three brothers, Ted Roberts of Valdosta, Barry Matthews of Starke, FL and Roy Matthews of Middleburg, FL.

Funeral services were held in the Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home on Monday, April 9, 2007, with Reverend Brad Bailey officiating. Burial was in Hutcheson Cemetery, Truetlen County.

Lawrence D. O’Rourke, 66

Mr. Lawrence D. O’Rourke, 66, of Pooler, died on Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at his home after suffering from a lengthy illness.

Mr. O’Rourke was born in Omro, WI, and had lived in Pooler since 2005. He had been employed with the State of Georgia as a correctional officer. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1957 until 1961 and in the U.S. Army from 1961 until 1981 and served in Vietnam for 3 years. He was a Catholic and was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Isabell McCall O’Rourke, Sr. and his sister, Darlene.

Survivors include his wife, Ann O’Rourke; children, Laura (Eddie) Bragg, Misty (Michael) Moye, Rebecca (Alvin) Barnard, Larry O’Rourke, Jr., Sean O’Rourke and Kathleen O’Rourke; fourteen grandchildren; brothers, Gordon (Cindy) O’Rourke, Thomas (Theresa) O’Rourke and Gary (Karen) O’Rourke; brother-in-law, Richard Mathaus and a number of nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.

Edward Branch, 65, died Monday, April 2, 2007, after an extended illness. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area most of his life. He was retired from Life of Georgia Insurance Company and the Georgia National Guard. He attended Jones Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Margie M. Branch of Jones Creek; two daughters and son-in-law, Tonya Hodges of Jones Creek and Suzanne and Shane Swindell of Rye Patch; a son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Joy Branch of Statesboro; a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Jerry Maennche of Springfield; a brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Vicky Branch of Claxton and Randy Branch of Hinesville; five grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Imogene Ray Colson, 73

Imogene Ray Colson, 73, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of her life. She was retired from TAM Industries, a homemaker and a member of Watermelon Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Curtis and Mollie Ray and her stepmother, Minnie Lee Ray.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Leroy Colson Jr. of Glennville; daughters and son-in-law, Wanda and Raymond Pettegrew of Claxton and Barbara Hatcher of Thomasville, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Suzanne Colson of Glennville; sisters and brother-in-law, Christine Sapp of Hagan, Reba Hill of Greenville, GA and Joy and Steve Spence of Rincon; brothers and sisters-in-law, Avon and Annette Ray of Glennville, O.T. and Joyce Ray of Reidsville, Ronnie and Sue Ray of Dallas, GA and Eugene and Carolyn Ray of Springfield; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Dan Conner Sr., 63

Dan Conner Sr. was born February 14, 1944, in Glennville, GA, to Carrie Bell Harris of Miami, FL, and the late David Teasdell of Glennville, GA, and stepfather, John Young of Miami, FL. He departed his life on March 22, 2007, at Fort Pierce Nursing Home after a short illness.

He attended Glennville public schools. For many years he resided in Fort Pierce, FL, where he met Ms. Gloria Woods, his life-long companion.

He leaves to cherish his memory, one son, Dan Conner Jr. of Bellville, GA; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn Conner; two grandchildren, Danielle Conner and Dan Conner III; many step-children, Carl James of Philadelphia, PA, Johnnie M. Brown of Miami, FL, J. W. Christopher Ray DeLoach, 7

Christopher Ray DeLoach, 7, passed away Monday evening, April 2, 2007, at Memorial Health Medical University Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. The Bulloch County native had lived in Claxton all of his life. He was a second grader at Claxton Elementary School and loved playing his video games. He was a member of Pembroke Assembly of God.

He is survived by his mother, Samantha Tapley of Claxton; his father, Christopher DeLoach of Claxton; two sisters and brother-in-law, Carrie and Jeremy DeLoach and Tracey Tapley, all of Claxton; his maternal grandparents, Ronnie and Alma Myers of Jesup; paternal grandparents, Raymond and Jean DeLoach of Daisy; two nephews, Austin and Andrew DeLoach of Daisy; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 5, 2007, at 4:00 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church in Claxton with Pastor Steve Hester of the Pembroke Assembly of God officiating. Interment will follow in the Brewton Cemetery in Hagan.

Rev. William Eason, 75

Rev. William Eason, age 75, died Monday, March 26, 2007, at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro. The Tattnall County native was a graduate of Candler County Training School. He received a B.S. in elementary education from Albany State College. He later earned a master’s of education in school administration for Florida A & M University. He coached basketball and taught in Tattnall County and served as assistant principal in Emanuel County. He retired in 1988 after a 30-year career.

In 1958, he married the former Geneva Washington, who preceded him in death.

The Rev. Eason was a member of St. Luke AME in Metter. He was called into the ministry in 1978. As a pastor, he served in the Old Georgia Conference, Augusta Georgia Conference and the South Conference. He pastured in the Cobbtown circuit, Reidsville circuit, Davisboro circuit, Mt. Moriah circuit and the Lyons circuit.

He was a member of Candler County Community Ministerial Association, Phi Sigma Fraternity Inc., Georgia Retired Teachers Association, East Collins Community Center, NAACP and American Legion Post #313.

He is survived by his wife, Doretha Eason of Cobbtown; three sons, the Rev. William L. Eason Sr. (Rosalyn) of Savannah, the Rev. Gregory Eason Sr. (Linda) of Atlanta and Nolan Eason of Cobbtown; two daughters, Pamela Eason-Hobbs (Booker T.) of Cobbtown and Dr. Felicia Eason-Forbes (Donald) of Gaithersburg, MD; two step children. Annette Bobbitt of Lyons and Joseph Bobbitt (Felicia) of Boston, MA; seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildern, seven sisters-in-law, six brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

The funeral service was held Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Wilcox Auditorium in Metter. Burial was at Eden Cemetery in Aline.

Mrs. Hattie Hutcheson, 86, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2007, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Truetlen County native had lived in Tattnall County most of her life. She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal Faith. She is preceded in death by her husband, Doster Hutcheson and a grandson, Robert Brett Hutcheson.

She is survived her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Mary Hutcheson of Reidsville; two grandchildren, Shea and Eddie Cleland of Baxley and Brett Hutcheson of Collins; four great-grandchildren, Layne and Cody Parker of Baxley, Courtney Garmon and Levi Hutcheson, both of Reidsville; and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn Elizabeth Elmore Shaffer, 88

Evelyn Elizabeth Elmore Shaffer, 88, died Monday, April 2, 2007, at her residence. The West Virginia native had lived in Glennville since 2005. She was a homemaker and a member of Teays Valley Baptist Church in West Virginia.

She is survived by her children Wanda and James Qualls, of Hurricane, WV, Mildred (Millie) Graves, of Glennville, and Harrison D. and Sandy Shaffer, of Lefthand, WV; a brother, Floyd Elmore of Pinch, WV; two sisters, Gertrude Mooney, of St. Albans, WV; and Cynthia Mace of Beach River, WV; two granddaughters, Pamela Mann and Cindy Graham, both of Glennville; 11 additional grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at11:00 a.m., Friday, April 6, 2007, at Hafer Funeral Home, in Elkview, WV. Burial will follow in Elmore Cemetery.

Elizabeth McArthur Morris Southwell, 93

Elizabeth McArthur Morris Southwell, 93, died March 27, 2007, at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman. She was born in Tattnall County on March 24, 1914, to Malcolm Dwight and Mabel Tietgen McArthur. Prior to moving to the Presbyterian Home, she had lived in Tattnall County for most of her life.

Throughout her life she was an avid gardener who grew many varieties of flowers, shrubs, and fruits. In addition, she loved both wild and domesticated animals and usually kept several pets.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Herbert Southwell.

She is survived by a daughter, Ann Morris Carswell and her husband William H. Carswell of Reidsville; two sons, MacArthur “Mac” Southwell of Reidsville and Johnny William Southwell of Macon; three grandchildren, Teresa Carswell Howard of Columbus, Robert Southwell of Glennville, and Rogni Southwell of Statesboro; and two great-grandsons, Robert Cameron Southwell and Damian Southwell, both of Hinesville.

Pallbearers were Brett Kennedy, Tommy Wallace, Louie Tietgen Smith, John Conley, John Sanders, Louie Smith Jr., and Stevie Smith.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 30, 2007, at Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. John Stephens officiating. Interment followed in the Joyce-McArthur Family Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to: Pearson Chapel United Methodist Church, 5830 Old River Road, Reidsville, GA 30453.

Richard Strickland, 67

Richard Strickland, 67, of Cobbtown, died Sunday at his home under the care of Hospice. He was born in Jacksonville, FL and went to high school in Glennville. He began his career with Borden Dairies in Savannah and continued that career in Orlando, FL, before moving to Cobbtown in 1984. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, the Seabee Reserves and the Georgia National Guard. He was health officer for the Georgia Department of Corrections for 15 years and was employed with the Tattnall county Sheriff’s Dept. for the past five years. He was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. Richard was known for his story telling and gardening. He was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn Crews Strickland and a brother, Danny Strickland.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Curl Strickland of Cobbtown; three children, Richard A. Strickland Jr. of Guyton, Michael Collins of Cobbtown and Cindy Blanton of Metter; his father, Henry A. Strickland of Glennville; two brothers, Wade Strickland of Dawsonville, and Jeff Strickland of Cummings; two sisters, Patricia Durrence of Suwannee and Kym Jones of Alpharetta; six grandchildren, Chris, Alan, Whitney, Cayla, Tyler and Ellah.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with burial following in the Sunlight Cemetery. Military honors were observed.

Pallbearers were Kim Lynn, Jeremy Curl, Eddie Strickland, Billy Kennedy, Ricky Bryant and Gerald Mongin. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Tattnall County Sheriff’s Department.
