Obituaries for February 25, 2010 Annie Ruth Blair, 74 Ms. Annie Ruth Blair, age 74 passed away Monday February 22, 2010, at her residence. The Bryan County native had lived in Claxton most of her life. She was a homemaker and was known for taking care of many children. She was preceded in death by her son, Randall Blair. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Oren and Patricia Blair of Ellabell, Olan and Diane Blair of Bulloch County; daughter, Lisa Gallien of Louisiana; special friends, Charles and Mary Gibson of Claxton, and five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Reidsville Chapel, with the Rev. Tony Hewitt officiating. Interment followed in the Black Creek Cemetery. Bradley B. William Brannen, 70 William Brannen, 70, passed away Friday, February 19, 2010, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro. He was born in Tattnall County, January 9, 1940, to Arnie and Letha Brannen. He was a U.S. Army Veteran; employed with Kaiser Chemical for many years and a self-employed auto mechanic. He was member of Antioch Baptist Church where he served as deacon and was very active in the Tattnall Evans Association. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arnie and Letha Brannon. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Brannen of Glennville; children, Billy Brannen (Lynn) of Statesboro, Michele Wallace of Glennville and Libby Henderson (Jim) of Norfolk, VA; four sisters, Eleise Godwin of Jacksonville, FL, Linda Smiley and Barbara Barrow both of Lyons, and Joy Ellis of Glennville; two brothers, Edward Brannen of Glennville and James Brannen of Claxton; aunt, Alijene Lambdin of Glennville; grandchildren, Jennifer and Josh Laramay, Jenny Larisey, Jarrell and Ciearra Larisey, Peter and Robert Wallace; great-grandchildren, Johnny Larisey and Little Jarrell Larisey; and several nieces and nephew. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at Antioch Baptist Church and burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Peter Wallace, Robert Wallace, Jeremy Hallowell, Jerrell Larisey, Jamie Smiley, and Nathan Cramer. Sallie Flowers Busby, 85 Sallie Flowers Busby, 85, died Sunday, February 21, 2010, at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. The Liberty County native had lived in this area most of her life. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She is survived by her sons, Olan Strickland and Ronnie Strickland, both of Glennville; sisters, Ruth McIntosh of Savannah and Brunelle English of Bowling Green, KY; 11 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 25, from the chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home, with Reverend Jerry Knight officiating. Burial will follow in Stanfield Cemetery. Irma Jean Sapp Greene, 73 Irma Jean Sapp Greene, 73, of Brunswick, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at her residence. A native of Candler County, she was born on December 6, 1936, to the late Hoy and Ruby Lee Jarriel Sapp. Mrs. Greene was a resident of McIntosh County from 1962 to 1971, and had resided in Brunswick since 1971. She was employed by Southern Bell for 35 years as a telephone operator. After retirement, she was employed by the Glenn County Board of Education as a cafeteria baker. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and the Brunswick Primitive Baptist Church, where she taught children’s Sunday school. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, William B. “Bo” Greene of Brunswick; son, William Burton Greene Jr. of Brunswick; daughter, Felicia (Mikey) Johnson of Brunswick; grandson, Ryan Johnson and granddaughter, Hannah Johnson of Brunswick; three sisters, Colleen S. Finch of Moncks Corner, SC, Linda Faye S. (James) Assad of Myrtle Beach, SC and Janice Sapp of Collins; three brothers, Jerry (Janice) Sapp of Darien, Hugh (Lori) Rogers of O’Brien, FL, and Joey (Diane) Singleton of Collins; two sisters-in-law, Judy Morris of Brunswick and Blanche Grier of Black Creek and several nieces and nephews. Geraldine Smith Jarriel, 92 Geraldine Smith Jarriel, 92, of the Hillview Community died Friday, February 19, 2010, at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. She was the daughter of James Roscoe and Zilfa Cowart Smith and had lived in Tattnall County most of her life. She was a homemaker and worked at the clothing factory in Lyons. Mrs. Jarriel was the pianist for many years at Rogers Baptist Church where she was a member. She loved to cook and sew and was dedicated to her family and friends with helping others as her goal. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Jarriel; a brother, James Smith and a son-in-law, Jean Van Goidtsnoven. Survivors are daughters and a son-in-law, Teresa Van Goidtsnoven of Fernandina Beach, FL, Laverne and Al Beasley of Hillview; sister-in-law, Shirley Smith of Hillview; four grandchildren, Stephen (Alacia) Van Goidtsnoven of Middleburg, FL, Beth Abernethy of Fernandina, Keith (Carole) Beasley of Glennville, Tonya (Larry) Blocker of Claxton; and seven great grandchildren. Eva Lee Pittman, 84 Mrs. Eva Lee Pittman, age 84 of Lyons, died Thursday, February 18, 2010 in the Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia after an extended illness. She was a native of Collins, lived in Miami, FL, most of her life, and moved from Okeechobee, FL, to Lyons in 1986. She worked at Westview Baptist Church Daycare in Miami for seven years and was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church in Lyons. She was a Sunday School Teacher for three to five year olds for 48 years and had perfect attendance for 48 years in Sunday school. She enjoyed spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron Pittman, and her parents, Daniel and Kate Collins Lynn. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Glenn Russell of Lyons; four grandchildren, Valerie (Chuck) Mullis, Justin (Ginger) Russell, and Jordan Russell all of Lyons, and Rebekah Russell of Douglasville; two great-grandchildren, Russell and Hannah Leigh Mullis of Lyons; two step-great-grandchildren Kennedy and Glendon Joiner of Lyons; three brothers, Gene, Wendell, and Lavanda Lynn of Collins; four sisters, Sue Nell Farmer of Panama City, Katherine Bass of Reidsville, Lois Gibner of Bluffton, SC, and Carolyn Martin of Sarasota, FL,; several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Greg Lynn of Collins. Ira Wayne Rogers, 64 Ira Wayne Rogers, 64, husband, father and friend passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 13, 2010. He was born November 4, 1945, in Lyons, Georgia to Ira and Lucille Rogers. He graduated from Glennville High School and then continued his education at Southern Tech with an associate’s degree in drafting. Later he served in the Vietnam War and was awarded a Purple Heart. In 1968 he married Faye Moncrief and they enjoyed 41 wonderful years of marriage. Wayne was a member of Glennville First Baptist Church and enjoyed life to its fullest. He was an avid sportsman who loved hunting, fishing and golf. He also loved to draw and was an excellent carpenter who could build anything he set his mind to. He was the Vice President of International Sales at Rotary Corporation. During his time at Rotary he achieved many accomplishments. Throughout his years of service he traveled extensively around the world working in many capacities including purchasing, advertising and international sales. He was a loving man with a compassionate soul. He put others first at all times. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Lucille Rogers. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Faye Moncrief Rogers of Glennville; children, Kellie Rogers and Brett Ziegler and Brian Rogers, all of Glennville and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and friends he considered family. Funeral services were held Monday, February 22, 2010, at Glennville First Baptist Church. Burial followed in Glennville City Cemetery with military honors. Emma Della Williams, 87 Emma Della Williams, 87, of Jacksonville passed away in Orange Park on Sunday January 31, 2010. She was born in Reidsville, and was a retired fashion model. Mrs. Williams was a Methodist and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 103 of Mount Dora. She moved to Jacksonville from Reidsville, but had been a longtime resident of the Mount Plymouth Mount Dora area. Mrs. Williams is survived by her children, Glenn (Brenda) Williams and Donna (David) West both of Jacksonville, her grandchildren Scott Williams of Schenectady, NY, and Devon and Dawn Reater both of Jacksonville, and many nieces and nephews. Ceremonies were held in the Hamlin & Hilbish Chapel on Thursday, February 4 at 11 a.m. with Rev. William Boyer officiating, interment followed in Lakeside Memory Gardens, Eustis. Paul Jackson Sr. Mr. Paul Jackson Sr., a longtime resident of Mt. Vernon, NY, died February 11, 2010, at Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle. He was born to Lester and Nettie (Bostick) Jackson in Collins, GA, where he graduated from the public schools ands attended Savannah State University. Employed as a Wholesale Beverage Salesman, he was married to Clora (Mincey) Jackson, who survives him. Vivian DeLoach Kicklighter, 100 Vivian DeLoach Kicklighter, 100, passed away Friday, February 12, 2010. She was born in Tattnall County, April 29, 1909, to Frank and Lala Tootle DeLoach. She was a life-long resident of Tattnall County and was employed with the Tattnall County School System for many years. She was a member of Mendes Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Fess Kicklighter and a young son, Lamont Kicklighter. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John Derrel and Georgeanna Kicklighter of Seabrook Island, SC; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jimmy McMullan of Mt. Jasper Paul Martin, 72 Jasper Paul Martin, 72, passed away Friday, February 12, 2010, at The Doctors Hospital of Tattnall. The Tattnall County native had lived in Savannah for many years, prior to moving back to Collins in 1993 after retirement. He was retired from Union Camp Corporation in Savannah. He enjoyed fishing and golfing and was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Leona Martin and a brother, James David Martin. He is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Montez Deloach of Mendes and Virginia and Aaron Todd of Claxton; three brothers, Royce Martin of Faulkville, Ellis Martin of Cedar Crossing, GA and Pat Martin of Collins; sister-in-law, Mary Martin of Lyons, and several nieces and nephews. Dora Smith Paul., 90 Dora Smith Paul., 90, passed away Friday, February 12, 2010, after an extended illness. She was born in Soperton, GA, May 27, 1919, to James and Lula Hester Smith. Mrs. Paul moved to Florida in 1957, returning to Glennville in 2005. She was a homemaker and a member of Northside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Elmo Paul. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Vernon Peck of Glennville; son and daughter in-law, Rodney and Delores Paul of Glennville; sister, Nina Mae Driggers of Glennville; one granddaughter, Lisa Kicklighter; two great grandchildren, Joseph and Kendra Kicklighter and several nieces and nephews. Jayden Taevon Woods, 3 months Jayden Taevon Woods was born November 8, 2009, at Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville, GA, to Shanique Shade Woods and Demetrius Lamon Robinson. Jayden was called home to the Lord on Saturday, February 6, 2010, at 7:10 p.m., at Emory Children’s Healthcare Hospital in Atlanta, with his family by his side. Jayden leaves behind his loving mother, Shanique Woods from Hinesville; his father, Demetrius Robinson from Reidsville; his maternal grandparents, Fred and Rosa Boggs from Hinesville; his paternal grandparents, Joyce Wright from Reidsville and Terry Robinson from Reidsville; two half-brothers, Davion Robinson from Riverdale, GA, and Demetrion Robinson from Hinesville, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Catherine Thompson Arrendale, 90 Catherine Thompson Arrendale, 90, of Douglasville, GA, passed away February 4, 2010, after a short illness. Mrs. Arrendale was born in Sylvania, GA, to the late John Henry and Lessie Lovett Thompson. She was graduated from the School of Nursing of the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, receiving her RN from the University of Georgia and was a Registered Nurse. She married Dr. Joe J. Arrendale on December 27, 1940, in Aiken, SC. They were long time residents of Cornelia, GA, and Reidsville, GA, before moving to Douglasville in 1967. Mrs. Arrendale was a Life-member of the National Garden Club and the Garden Club of Georgia, a Master Gardener, member of the Skint Chestnut Garden Club of Douglasville, the Designers Club, and the Ikebana Ikenobo Society. She was a Master Judge for the National Garden Club, regularly winning awards for her design. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Joe J. Arrendale of Douglasville; a son William Bruce Arrendale of Canton, GA ; a daughter and son-in-law Suzanne Arrendale and Ricky Strickland of Charleston, SC; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial will occur at a later date. Christine Merritt Bland, 71 Christine Merritt Bland, age 71, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2010, at her residence. The Tattnall County native had lived in Florida for many years, prior to moving back to Tattnall County in 1981. She loved to fish and take care of her flowers. She was known for always being willing to help others and was of the Baptist faith. She is preceded in death by her parents, Earnest and Cleo Crews Merritt; brothers, James and Jessie Merritt and sisters, Lucille Hutcheson and Sandra Nell Arnold. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Vivian Ann Roxby, Jane and John Mackinnon, Annette and Andy Gay, all of Reidsville, Jackie Smith and Dell Spikes, both of Florida; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Lee and Norma Jean Scarbrough of Reidsville; sisters, Etta Marie Pearson of Florida and Nadine Spikes of Reidsville; brother, Roger Dale Merritt of South Carolina; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Burial services were held at the Reidsville Chapel on Tuesday afternoon, and interment followed in the Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church Cemetery in Toombs County. Wilbert “Ray” Harper, 77 Wilbert “Ray” Harper, age 77, passed away Sunday February 7, 2010, at Tattnall Health Care Center under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Toombs County native had lived in Florida for many years before moving to Cobbtown 25 years ago. Ray loved reading, and especially the comics. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Estelle Lynn Harper. He is survived by his aunt, Ruth McMillian of Swainsboro; caretakers, W.L. and Betty Sikes of Cobbtown, and numerous cousins. Graveside funeral services were conducted Wednesday, February 10, 2010, from the Sunlight Cemetery in Cobbtown, with the Reverend Sterling Bargeron officiating. Bradley B. Justine May Mallard, 82 Justine May Mallard, 82, passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. She was born in Stillmore to Marvin and Johanna O’Brien May. After her marriage to R.E. Mallard, they lived in Savannah for a time and she worked at Union Bag before returning to Aline to start a family. Mrs. Mallard worked as a bookkeeper for Perkins Poultry and with her husband at Mallard Ford Tractor. Her greatest pleasure was in 1980 when her only grandson, Kyle, was born. She was a member of Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church. Mrs. Mallard was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years and an infant son. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca “Becky” and Glyn Thrift; a grandson, Kyle Mallard Thrift, all of Metter; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Phyllis May of Sandy Springs; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Friday, at Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Ron Yeakle and Elder John Sheldon Mikell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Doris L Manske, 93 Doris L Manske died peacefully at Community Hospice in Vidalia, GA on Saturday, February 6, 2010, after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Manske in 1959. Doris was born in Elizabeth, NJ, on July 21, 1916, to Lillian and Herbert Wacker. Upon graduation from high school, her parents took her on her first cruise as a graduation gift from New Jersey to Havana aboard the first ship ever christened that was supposedly “fireproof” … The Morro Castle (details in recently published book). Unfortunately, this ship burned on the return leg of the cruise. Doris, with her mother and father abandoned ship. She and her mother were rescued; her father drowned. In years to follow her favorite holiday was aboard a cruise ship for exotic ports. Following this tragic event, which gained national media attention, it was time to think about earning a living and she opened a dance studio in Roselle Park, NJ, which was quite successful for a number of years prior to relocating to Palm Beach County, FL in 1947. There she became involved in fashion retailing with Burdine’s Department Stores (Federated Department Stores). She enjoyed a very successful career and retired after 35 plus years to travel, play bridge and volunteer for The Arts. In 2003 she relocated to Reidsville, GA where she remained until her death. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas K and Francine Manske of Reidsville, GA.; brother, Kenneth H Wacker and sister-in-law, Gisela of Hope Sound, FL; grandchildren: Michele Moore of Atlantis, Fl,; Gina and Danny Kinsey of Reidsville, GA; Carrie Lynn and John Andersen of Jupiter, FL; Cristie Lee Manske of Norcross, GA; and Douglas H Manske of Durango, CO.; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews that reside in the south Florida area and many life long loving friends. Obituaries for February 4, 2010 Cordeal “Deal” Carter, 93 Mrs. Cordeal “Deal” Carter, 93, died Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at her home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. She was a lifelong resident of Tattnall County. Mrs. Carter was a longtime member of Cobbtown Baptist Church where she taught Training Union and kept the nursery for years. She was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jeanette Priest, and son J.C. “Buddy” Carter. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Merrell Holland of Garden City, Marolyn and Billy Lynn of Collins, Judy and Don Farabaugh of Wilmington Island; sons and daughter-in-law, Bill and Fran Carter of Reidsville and Ronnie Carter of Cobbtown; one sister, Willie Mae Yaughn of Garden City; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 30, at the Cobbtown Baptist Church with Dr. Roger Branch officiating. Burial followed in the Sunlight Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bill Carter, Ronnie Carter, Don Farabaugh, John Barry Holland, Wesley Carter and Kevin O’Keefe. JoeAnn Sapp Hensley, 76 JoeAnn Sapp Hensley, 76, died Saturday, January 30, 2010,at her home. She was born in Pulaski, Georgia to Joe and Alma DeLoach Sapp. She lived her early years there, graduating from Pulaski High School where she loved roller-skating. JoeAnn had lived in Cobbtown since 1956, was a homemaker and a secretary at Hensley Tobacco Warehouse for many years. She was a member of the Cobbtown Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Doris Foss. She is survived by her husband, Don Hensley; son, Jeff Hensley; daughter, Donna Hensley; one grandson, Hensley Jarriel, all of Cobbtown; two sisters, Hazel Williams of Pulaski and Ouida Livingston of Swainsboro; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services were held Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel with Rev.Sterling Bargeron officiating. James “Buck” Kirkland, 81 Mr. James “Buck” Kirkland, age 81, passed away Thursday January 28, 2010, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center. The Bulloch County native had lived in Evans County most of his life. He was a farmer and of the Baptist faith. He loved fishing and playing with his grandchildren. Mr. Kirkland is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Sandra Kirkland; parents, Maner and Lula Kirkland; daughter, Sandy Kirkland; sister, Lalia Whitaker; great granddaughter, Madison Rose. He is survived by daughter, Debbie Kirkland of Bellville; sons and daughters-in-law, Dwane and Tammy Kirkland of Louiville, KY, Jerry and Jeannie Kirkland of Brunswick, Jimmy and Wilda Kirkland of Reidsville, Roger and Brandie Kirkland of Claxton and Joey Kirkland of Bellville; sisters, Beatrice Blocker of Glennville, Jeanette Rushing of Register, Jean Kicklighter of Claxton and Ann Kirkland of Reidsville; brothers, Loyd Kirkland of Statesboro, Clifford Kirkland of Reidsville, Talmadge Kirkland of Sacramento, CA, and Gary Kirkland of Vidalia; ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 31, 2010, from the Reidsville Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Green and Elder Jimmy Haire officiating. Eugene Ray, 66 Mr. Eugene Ray, 66, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2010, at Hospice Savannah. Mr. Ray was born in Tattnall County to the late Luther Curtis Ray and Mollie Lynn Ray. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blitchton and enjoyed fishing and farming. He had retired from the Coastal State Prison. He was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Imogene and Leroy Colson. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Ray; children and their wives/husbands, Mitchell and Cindy Ray, Brenda and Darren Nivens, Penny and Billy Oglesby and Dylan Ray; grandchildren, Crystal Ray, Ryleigh Dukes, Samantha, Shanda and Noah Oglesby and Duncan Nivens; step-grandchildren, Candace, Brandon and Joshua Blackman; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Avon and Annette Ray, O.T. and Joyce Ray and Ronnie and Sue Ray; sisters and brother-in-law Christine Sapp, Reba Hill and Joy and Steve Spence, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, in the chapel of the funeral home with burial following at Effingham Memorial Gardens on Highway 119 in Effingham County.
